vMix attempts to reconnect to YouTube automatically after an internet or streaming-provider interruption; the documented guidance does not identify a separate reconnect switch. Watch the Stream button: orange indicates a connection or retry state, while red means vMix has re-established its connection and is sending video. This restores the encoder connection, not your internet service, and it does not guarantee that YouTube will keep the same live event open throughout every outage.
Before you go live: configure the YouTube destination
Set up the destination and YouTube event before streaming. vMix documents two workflows. The appropriate choice depends on whether you want to create and manage the event in YouTube Studio or start from vMix. The available guidance does not establish that one workflow reconnects better than the other.
YouTube Live Destination: create the event in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers event settings, including encoder details and stream controls.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into the corresponding destination settings in vMix. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”; keep the key private and use the one associated with the intended event. See Manage live stream settings.
- Start the vMix stream and confirm that YouTube Live Control Room receives it. Use its stream-health status and messages to check YouTube’s side of the connection.
YouTube Live Stream Now: start from vMix
vMix also documents a workflow that chooses YouTube as the destination, signs in, and creates a stream or selects a scheduled event from vMix. Its guide says the workflow can stream automatically to the same stream on repeat occasions. Follow the current vMix interface; menus and labels may change between versions. See vMix’s YouTube streaming guide and Live Stream Now instructions.
There is an important event-control difference: vMix says that finishing a Live Stream Now broadcast in vMix automatically ends it on YouTube. YouTube also offers auto-start and auto-stop settings that affect how an encoder controls an event. If you want to resume the same event after a disruption, do not press Stop or end the YouTube event unless you intend to finish it.

What to do when the internet drops
- Let vMix retry. After the connection is lost, check the Stream button. According to vMix, orange or amber means the stream is disconnected or connecting; vMix automatically attempts to reconnect. When a connection succeeds, the button returns to red. The official article describing this behavior was last updated August 20, 2020, so check the current interface if its colors or labels differ: Why does the Stream button sometimes show orange or amber?
- Check that your network is back. Automatic reconnect is an encoder response to restored connectivity; it cannot repair a failed router, ISP connection, or upstream route. Wait for the network path to return while watching vMix.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review stream health and any status messages to determine whether YouTube is receiving the feed. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guide describes checks for connection and stream issues.
- Keep the event configuration intact. Confirm that vMix still has the intended stream URL and key. Avoid ending the event or stopping the stream if your aim is to continue the same YouTube event.
If vMix keeps switching between orange and red
Repeated disconnect-and-reconnect cycles usually call for connection and workload checks, not a search for a hidden reconnect toggle. vMix identifies insufficient upload bandwidth for the selected quality, high CPU load, and a path to the streaming provider that cannot accept the selected quality among possible causes.
- Check upload capacity. vMix gives a rule of thumb that streaming bitrate should be below 80% of available upload speed. Treat that as guidance, not a guarantee; available upload capacity can vary. Reduce the stream bitrate or quality if the connection cannot sustain it. The advice appears in the vMix article last updated August 20, 2020: vMix’s orange/amber button guidance.
- Check CPU load. If the system is under heavy load, reduce work that is not essential to the broadcast and check whether the stream stabilizes.
- Check YouTube’s status for the incoming feed. Use Live Control Room stream health and its messages alongside vMix’s button state; the two views help distinguish an encoder-side issue from a YouTube-side status or delivery problem. See YouTube encoder troubleshooting.
- Check the provider path and selected quality. If upload capacity and CPU load appear adequate but the stream still cycles, the route to the streaming provider may not be handling the selected quality. Recheck the quality and bitrate settings before changing the YouTube event.
What automatic reconnect does—and does not—guarantee
vMix’s support article says it will automatically attempt to reconnect after a loss of internet or streaming-provider service. It does not state a retry interval, a maximum outage duration, or a guarantee that every YouTube event or viewer page remains open. Encoder reconnection and YouTube event continuity are separate: vMix may reconnect while the event’s state or controls determine whether viewers return to the same live experience. Check Live Control Room rather than treating a red vMix button alone as confirmation of the event’s status.

The documented reconnect behavior is described in a vMix article last updated August 20, 2020. The vMix YouTube destination overview was updated April 9, 2025, while the Live Stream Now guide was updated March 16, 2021. Software screens may change; use the current vMix and YouTube interfaces when labels differ.
