The delay is the initial wait, not a fixed interval: OBS doubles the wait after each retry. There is no official India-specific preset, so choose values that give brief interruptions time to clear and test them on your own connection.
Set OBS to reconnect after a dropped YouTube stream
The English OBS interface uses the controls Automatically Reconnect, Retry Delay, and Maximum Retries. Their exact location can vary with OBS version and output mode. Find them in the streaming output controls and configure them before going live.
- Open OBS and locate the streaming output controls. Look for Automatically Reconnect, Retry Delay, and Maximum Retries.
- Enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Set Retry Delay to a positive starting wait and Maximum Retries to a finite number greater than zero. OBS defines zero retries as disabling reconnecting.
- Run a test stream and watch both OBS and YouTube Live Control Room to see whether the retry window is adequate for your connection.
OBS doubles the retry wait after each attempt to avoid overloading services. For example, if the starting delay is D, the following waits grow rather than repeating D each time. A longer retry window may cover a short outage, but it cannot restore a connection that remains down or resolve a stream rejected by YouTube. Official OBS documentation does not prescribe a particular delay or retry count for India.
Choose retry values for the connection you actually have
There is no single best retry delay or retry count for every Indian connection. Fiber, mobile broadband, Wi-Fi, congestion at busy hours, and outages on the route to YouTube can behave differently, even within the same city. Use a test stream and observe how long your ordinary brief interruptions last; configure retries to cover those interruptions without assuming OBS can solve a persistent network failure.

- Use a positive delay and a retry allowance greater than zero; zero disables reconnecting.
- Remember the wait expands at each retry. The initial delay is not the interval between all subsequent attempts.
- Do not treat a successful reconnect as proof the underlying connection is stable. Persistent dropped frames or repeated disconnections call for bitrate and network troubleshooting.
Make sure your upload can sustain the stream
Reconnect controls act after a connection loss. They do not compensate for an encoder bitrate higher than your connection can sustain. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and selecting a quality that is reliable for the connection; OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. Treat that OBS figure as a starting point, not a guarantee or an India-specific rule. Test at the time and under the network conditions you expect to broadcast.
The following are YouTube’s H.264 encoder bitrate recommendations for these specific resolution and frame-rate combinations. They are not measurements of any Indian ISP’s stable upload capacity.

Use the recommendation for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate from a different format. If your sustained upload does not leave reliable headroom for the selected bitrate, lower the bitrate or stream at a lower resolution or frame rate.
Keep YouTube ingest settings separate from reconnect settings
Reconnect options determine what OBS does after a connection loss. Encoder and ingest settings determine whether the stream is configured compatibly in the first place. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Check YouTube’s current guidance when selecting settings, since recommendations and interface options can change.

Keep the YouTube Live Control Room open during a test. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages. If YouTube reports a configuration problem, correct that issue rather than increasing OBS’s retry count.
Troubleshoot repeated drops and failed reconnects
- OBS reconnects but drops frames again: Your bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity. Measure sustained upload, lower the bitrate, or reduce output quality, then test again.
- Wi-Fi is unstable: Where practical, connect by Ethernet. A compatible Cat6 Ethernet cable may help replace an unstable local Wi-Fi link; choose a length that fits your setup. A cable will not fix ISP congestion or a poor route beyond your home network.
- Connection problems persist on Ethernet: Check the router or modem, cables, network drivers, VPN or security software interference, and the network path. OBS advises contacting your ISP if the problem continues.
- Windows network trouble remains: OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing for Windows. It also suggests testing IPv4-only as a troubleshooting step; if that makes no difference, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
- Congestion causes bitrate swings: OBS dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion, but picture quality may fall and the underlying connection problem remains.
- OBS cannot reconnect: Check that automatic reconnect is enabled, retries are greater than zero, and the stream key and YouTube stream are valid. A retry setting cannot fix a prolonged outage or a stream YouTube rejects.
OBS-maintained RTMPS service configuration lists primary and backup YouTube ingest endpoints. Changing endpoints can be a deliberate troubleshooting step, but the available official guidance does not establish that Indian users should use a particular endpoint.
