In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced, enable Automatically Reconnect, and set positive values for Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. There is no universally recommended numeric setting: choose a starting delay and retry limit that suit the likely interruption and how long you can wait before stepping in. OBS doubles the wait after each retry, so the delay is not a fixed interval. Reconnect is a recovery aid, not a guarantee of uninterrupted YouTube playback.
Set up OBS automatic reconnect
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced.
- Find Automatically Reconnect and enable it. The English interface labels the related fields Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. OBS Studio English interface strings
- Enter positive values for Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. OBS’s output reference explains that the retry delay is the starting wait and that the wait doubles with each retry to avoid overloading services. A retry count of zero disables reconnecting for supported outputs. OBS Studio output reference
- Apply the settings and test your stream before the event.
Choose the retry delay and count according to the kind of brief interruption you expect and how long you can tolerate OBS retrying before you or another operator intervenes. The cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish a single ideal number. Raising the retry limit does not fix a persistent network problem.
What the retry settings do—and do not do
These are OBS encoder-side controls: they determine whether OBS tries to restore an output connection after it is lost, and how long and how often it tries. They do not ensure YouTube keeps the broadcast active during every disconnection, nor do they guarantee viewers will see uninterrupted playback.
Keep reconnect behavior separate from YouTube’s stream setup. The stream URL is the destination entered into the encoder, and the stream key lets YouTube accept the encoder feed. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings govern whether a stream can be started or stopped from the encoder; they are not OBS retry controls. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

Test the stream before relying on reconnect
Run a test using audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube recommends choosing quality that suits the available internet connection, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. These checks help distinguish a brief interruption from a connection that cannot reliably carry the selected stream quality. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Troubleshoot repeated disconnections
Dropped frames or recurring connection loss
OBS says dropped frames indicate either an unstable connection to the remote server or a configured bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Investigate connection stability and whether the chosen bitrate is practical for your available upload connection rather than relying only on a higher retry count. Unstable Wi-Fi
If Wi-Fi is unreliable, OBS recommends trying a wired connection. Ethernet can reduce one source of instability, but it is not a guarantee; continue to check the connection and stream health.
OBS reconnects, but the YouTube broadcast does not behave as expected
Check the YouTube stream key, stream URL, and auto-start/auto-stop settings separately from OBS’s retry settings. They control different parts of the encoder-to-YouTube path and stream lifecycle. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
