To loop a video through OBS on a Mac, add it as a looping Media Source, set the canvas and output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, then configure a constant-bitrate stream using YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate guidance. Whether the Mac can sustain that workload depends on its hardware, encoder, source and scene complexity, and upload connection—test the complete setup before relying on it live.
Before you configure OBS
Decide what you mean by “loop”: a local video file repeated by OBS, a desktop or app capture, or a live camera/capture-card feed. A local file loop is the simplest route for a prerecorded broadcast. Screen capture needs macOS Screen Recording permission; camera or console input needs a compatible input path, and may require a capture card. A capture card is not needed just to loop a local file.
OBS lists Intel or Apple Silicon CPUs and macOS 11 or later as basic macOS requirements. Its system requirements page cautions that meeting them does not guarantee streaming capability; resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity all affect performance. The listed macOS version is from OBS’s requirements page and may not reflect later OBS releases. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test your real scene and source. Choose an encoder that fits the Mac
In OBS, open Settings → Output and choose Advanced output mode if needed to expose encoder options. OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox streaming with H.264 on Apple Silicon. For Intel Macs, OBS says to use x264 for streaming: VideoToolbox lacks the constant-bitrate support most streaming services require. Available options can depend on the Mac and OBS version, so do not assume AV1 or HEVC streaming encoding is available in every combination. OBS hardware encoding

Set the 4K 60fps video format
- In OBS, go to Settings → Video.
- Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840Ă—2160.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840Ă—2160.
- Set Common FPS Values to 60.
These are the OBS settings for a 2160p60 output; they do not guarantee the Mac can render and encode it smoothly. Start with footage that contains the detail you want to show: scaling smaller media up to 4K does not create native 4K detail.
Configure OBS streaming output
Open Settings → Output → Streaming. Use CBR (constant bitrate) and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Set the video bitrate according to the selected codec and YouTube’s 2160p60 guidance:

| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest bitrate figures, not a measure of what a particular Mac or internet connection can sustain. OBS’s cited documentation establishes H.264 streaming support through VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon, not universal AV1 or HEVC support. For stereo audio, use AAC, 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. For SDR video, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. YouTube’s guidance says 4K streams use normal latency; its low-latency optimization option is unavailable for 4K. Connect OBS to YouTube and test the loop
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the broadcast in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key from the broadcast settings.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube connection option available in your OBS version, and enter or connect the server and key.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts data to and through Google’s servers.
- Run a test with motion and audio representative of the actual loop. Check the OBS preview, YouTube preview and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while the stream runs.
A speed test can help check upload capacity, but it is not proof that the connection will sustain the broadcast. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream. YouTube live encoder settings

Choose 4K60, 4K30 or 1080p60 based on the workload
Keep 4K60 only if the source, Mac and sustained upload connection can handle it reliably. Compare settings against the actual programme rather than assuming a higher output is always better:
- Motion: 60 fps can suit fast movement; consider whether the source itself supplies 60 fps.
- Visible detail: 4K output is most useful when the source has 4K detail and the viewing context can show it.
- Upload headroom: YouTube’s recommended target is 50 Mbps for 2160p60 H.264, compared with 42 Mbps for 2160p30 H.264. For AV1/H.265, the listed recommendations are 35 Mbps at 2160p60 and 30 Mbps at 2160p30.
- Rendering and encoding stability: OBS advises reducing output resolution or frame rate when the workload exceeds the system’s capacity.
- Operational priority: If a stable continuous broadcast matters more than 4K60, a lower resolution or frame rate may be the practical choice.
The YouTube figures above are published recommendations, not a guarantee of visual quality or Mac performance.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and encoding overload
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding overload or choppy output | Encoder workload, frame rate, resolution, scene complexity, sources or filters | Reduce output to 30 fps or lower the output resolution. Simplify the scene and remove expensive filters. |
| Network-related dropped frames or unstable stream health | Sustained upload connection or network conditions | Test the actual connection during a representative stream; verify upload capacity against YouTube’s codec-specific target and use RTMPS where available. |
| Black screen or missing source | Source setup or macOS permission | Check that the source is enabled and grant the relevant Screen Recording, Camera or Microphone permission, then reopen or refresh the source as needed. |
| Loop stops or has no sound | Media Source settings, playback or audio routing | Confirm looping is enabled in the Media Source properties, check the OBS audio mixer, and test the file from start to end. |
OBS notes that resolution, frame rate, sources, filters and browser sources consume resources. Check Activity Monitor before closing unnecessary apps; reduce workload first, and leave the canvas resolution unchanged unless resources are severely constrained, since changing it can require repositioning sources. Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube broadcast of prerecorded video, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping OBS running on a Mac: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. Learn about StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
Copyright and channel eligibility still matter
OBS configuration does not grant rights to the video, music or other material you broadcast. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and channel monetization rules before building a recurring broadcast. A technical loop that runs correctly is not, by itself, evidence that a channel or programme qualifies for monetization.
