There is no OBS preset that can guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube stream over 4G in India. Start conservatively at 720p30, keep the video bitrate below the upload speed your connection can sustain—not just a single speed-test result—and test the actual route to YouTube before going live. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30 is 4 Mbps; whether your 4G connection can hold that rate depends on your location, signal, carrier network and other traffic.
Choose settings that leave room for a variable 4G connection
For a first test, configure OBS for 1280×720 at 30 frames per second (720p30). YouTube recommends 4 Mbps for H.264 at that resolution and frame rate. For comparison, its recommendation for 1080p30 is 5 Mbps. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not measurements of 4G performance or guarantees that a connection can sustain the rates. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide the platform guidance.
Set OBS’s video bitrate below the upload speed you can sustain during the conditions in which you plan to stream. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: mobile upload capacity varies, and a brief speed test may not reflect performance over a long broadcast. Leave additional room for other devices and traffic sharing the connection. If your stable upload cannot support the target bitrate, reduce the bitrate and retest; if necessary, reduce resolution or frame rate too. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guidance explains its recommendation.
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, as YouTube recommends; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Choose an encoder supported by your OBS installation and verify that your computer can encode the selected video without rendering or encoding overload. There is no single encoder preset established for every computer.

Set up OBS and connect it to your YouTube event
- Create the event: In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the live stream and obtain its connection details.
- Choose the YouTube connection in OBS: Open OBS Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, then connect your account or enter the stream key for the event, depending on the workflow offered in your OBS version.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your event.
- Set video and output: In OBS, choose 1280×720 and 30 fps for the initial test, then set the video bitrate in Settings > Output below your measured sustained upload capacity. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds in the encoder’s output settings.
- Check encoding load: Confirm OBS can render and encode the chosen settings without overload before relying on them for an important stream.
OBS labels and available encoder options can vary by version, platform and account-connection workflow. Confirm the stream is linked to the intended YouTube event before starting an important broadcast.
Test the complete setup before the broadcast
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test event rather than using an important public broadcast as the first trial.
- Use audio and movement similar to the planned content. A static test image may not reveal how the real programme behaves.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame count while the test runs. OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from rendering or encoding problems; a rising network-dropped-frame count indicates that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate.
- Repeat the test under realistic conditions, including the intended location and the devices or activities that will share the connection. A one-time result does not establish that the route will remain stable throughout a longer stream.
Troubleshoot OBS dropping frames or a stream that disconnects
- Network-dropped frames rise: The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the bitrate. Lower the bitrate first, then repeat the representative test. Pause competing uploads and downloads where practical.
- The stream drops despite a good speed-test result: A speed test is only a snapshot and does not establish sustained upload or a reliable route to YouTube’s ingest server. Test again at the streaming location and compare conditions rather than assuming OBS is at fault.
- Encoding or rendering overload appears: The computer may be struggling with the selected settings. Verify its encoding load and try a less demanding resolution or frame rate before the next test.
- Consider OBS dynamic bitrate only as a fallback: OBS documents “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta)” as an option that lowers bitrate rather than dropping frames when the connection cannot keep up. It can reduce picture quality and does not fix the underlying network problem, so it is not an uptime guarantee.
- A router or tethering change does not resolve instability: A 4G router may provide a more convenient local connection, but it cannot create tower capacity or prevent carrier outages. Compare available carriers at the actual location; the cited official guidance does not establish a nationwide best carrier or dependable upload rate for a particular address.
For India, the OBS and YouTube settings cited here are general guidance, not India-specific performance findings. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s Quality of Service information does not establish a guaranteed upload speed for your address or continuous 4G availability.
