How to Configure FFmpeg Reconnect Options for a Prerecorded YouTube Live Stream

FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options retry eligible input interruptions; they do not generally recover YouTube RTMP(S) output. Learn where options go, how EOF changes behavior, and how to test the complete stream.

FFmpeg’s reconnect_* options can retry an HTTP input; they do not generally reconnect FFmpeg’s YouTube RTMP(S) publishing output. Put the HTTP options before the matching -i, and leave reconnect_at_eof off when a finite prerecorded file is supposed to finish normally. Input recovery, YouTube ingest recovery, and what happens when the event stops are separate decisions.

First identify what FFmpeg needs to reconnect

The reconnect options discussed here are documented for FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol. They apply to an HTTP input URL, not to a local file and not as a general switch for recovering a YouTube RTMP(S) output. A local prerecorded file normally reaches EOF when it has finished; that is not an HTTP disconnect.

For an HTTP-hosted video, a basic illustrative pattern is:

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30
  -i 'https://example.invalid/video.mp4'
... your chosen codecs, mappings, and YouTube output ...

The options precede the -i they configure. The 30-second delay cap is an example, not a universal recommendation. Replace the example URL and the omitted encoding and output arguments with your actual source and event configuration. FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation defines these settings; check the installed build with ffmpeg -h protocol=http, because available options can vary by version and build.

Choose reconnect options based on the source

What the HTTP options do

  • reconnect: reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF.
  • reconnect_streamed: allow reconnects for streamed or non-seekable sources.
  • reconnect_at_eof: treat EOF as an error and reconnect. FFmpeg describes this as useful for live or endless streams.
  • reconnect_on_network_error: reconnect on TCP or TLS errors during connection.
  • reconnect_on_http_error: retry selected HTTP response codes, including specific statuses or classes such as 4xx or 5xx.
  • reconnect_delay_max: cap the reconnect delay.
  • reconnect_max_retries: cap the retry count.
  • reconnect_delay_total_max: cap the total reconnect delay.
  • respect_retry_after: honor a server’s Retry-After header when applicable.

Do not enable every option by default. For a finite HTTP file that should play once and end, leave reconnect_at_eof off unless retrying or restarting at EOF is intentional. The HTTP options do not establish recovery behavior for local-file I/O errors.

Match the option to the intended EOF behavior

  • Local, finite file: expect normal completion at EOF. HTTP reconnect settings do not fix local-file read errors.
  • HTTP-hosted, finite file: use HTTP reconnect controls for applicable interruptions, but allow normal EOF if the video should finish.
  • Live or endless HTTP source: reconnect-at-EOF may fit a source expected to continue indefinitely, but verify the behavior with the particular source and FFmpeg build.

Keep input retries separate from YouTube output recovery

FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect controls concern the HTTP input. YouTube’s standard encoder guidance describes RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Placing HTTP options before an HTTP input does not by itself reconnect an RTMP(S) output, restart a stopped YouTube event, or guarantee gapless playback after a publishing interruption. Confirm recovery behavior with the exact FFmpeg build, output protocol, and event settings.

Decide in advance what should happen if the process stops: finish the event, restart the video from the beginning, resume from a known position, or alert an operator. Those are distinct recovery requirements; an HTTP read retry does not decide them. Test the intended behavior with a non-public or unlisted event and representative media before scheduling a real broadcast.

Set up YouTube ingest and protect the stream key

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you use rather than assuming one value fits all configurations. YouTube recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. In Live Control Room, create or select the event, then copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. The key is a credential: do not expose it in shell-history examples, logs, screenshots, or shared scripts. Where possible, keep secrets out of command lines. If a key is compromised, rotate it through YouTube Studio; see Manage live stream settings.

Test the full workflow before the event

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing ahead of time with audio and motion representative of the real program, previewing the incoming stream, monitoring stream health, reviewing messages, and testing encoder failover. YouTube also recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That is operational guidance, not a guarantee that a stream will remain uninterrupted.

  1. Identify whether the source is a local file, an HTTP-hosted file, or a live/endless source, and whether it is finite.
  2. Check the installed FFmpeg version and available HTTP options with ffmpeg -h protocol=http.
  3. Verify the output protocol, YouTube stream URL and key, codecs, keyframe interval, bitrate, and audio format.
  4. Run a representative segment and confirm what should happen at EOF.
  5. In a controlled test, interrupt the source or network. Observe whether the input recovers, whether the publisher remains connected, and what viewers see.
  6. Preview the event, monitor stream health and messages, and test any separate backup or failover process.
  7. Keep the stream key private and decide who responds if the event stops.

Troubleshoot the failure at the layer where it occurs

Symptom Likely distinction What to check
The HTTP input stops after a connection or transfer error Input-side problem; HTTP reconnect settings may apply. Confirm the options precede the relevant -i, inspect the server response and FFmpeg logs, and check which options the installed build supports.
A finite video stops at its end Normal EOF, not necessarily a failure. Decide whether the event should end, restart, or resume. Do not turn on reconnect_at_eof unless retrying at EOF is intended.
A local file cannot be read or FFmpeg exits The HTTP protocol reconnect options do not establish local-file recovery. Check the file path, availability, and read error; use a recovery plan suited to the local source and test it.
The source continues but YouTube ingest disconnects Publishing/output problem, separate from HTTP input recovery. Check the output connection, protocol, encoder messages, event status, and the independent failover or operator plan.
YouTube receives a stream but reports poor health Could involve the outgoing network, bitrate, or encoder configuration. Check stream health, selected codec/resolution/frame-rate bitrate guidance, keyframe interval, and available upload bandwidth.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an unattended prerecorded YouTube stream rather than managing an FFmpeg process, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
