Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a quiet YouTube sleep stream, FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter is a practical way to control integrated loudness, loudness range and true peak. For a live pipeline, use a single pass and review how it behaves through quiet and loud passages. For a finished recording, measure the whole file first and then render a second pass; that workflow can use linear gain when the measured source and requested targets allow it.
A restrained starting point is I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2. These are suggested settings for subdued ambience, not YouTube requirements. Choose targets for the actual audio and listening context, then check the rendered file and the uploaded playback.
What the loudnorm settings control
FFmpeg’s loudnorm implements EBU R128 loudness normalization. Its main targets describe different aspects of the program, so they are not interchangeable:
I— integrated loudness: the overall perceived program level, expressed in LUFS.LRA— loudness range: how much loudness varies over time, expressed in LU.TP— true peak: the maximum reconstructed peak level, expressed in dBTP.
The filter documentation’s defaults are I=-24, LRA=7 and TP=-2; they are filter defaults, not YouTube upload rules. The suggested I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2 starting point is an editorial choice for restrained soundscapes such as rain or a steady fan. A different source or intended listening level may call for different targets. YouTube’s official pages cited below do not publish an integrated-loudness or true-peak requirement for creators. Choose one pass or two
| Workflow | Best fit | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single pass | A live stream or a quick file conversion | The filter processes audio as it runs. In dynamic mode it can adjust loudness as the program changes. | One processing pipeline, but listen for gain movement or pumping across real transitions. |
| Two pass | A completed file when you want measurement-informed, reproducible processing | The first pass measures the full source; the second uses the measurements to render it. Linear scaling is possible if the constraints permit. | Requires an analysis pass and a render pass. If the requested LRA or true-peak constraint is incompatible, FFmpeg can fall back to dynamic mode. |
Neither method is universally higher quality. The practical distinction is whether the audio is continuous and live or available as a finished file, and whether linear scaling is feasible. FFmpeg documents single-pass use for streams and files, and double-pass use for files. In dynamic mode, true-peak detection internally upsamples to 192 kHz; set the output sample rate explicitly when needed with -ar or aresample. FFmpeg loudnorm filter documentation
Configure normalization in a live FFmpeg pipeline
- Add the audio filter: include this filter fragment in the FFmpeg pipeline that sends audio to the YouTube stream:
-af "loudnorm=I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2:print_format=summary" - Set the targets deliberately: use
Ifor integrated loudness,LRAfor allowed variation andTPfor peak headroom. Treat the example values as a starting point for quiet ambience, not a platform-mandated target. - Check representative material: listen to the quietest and loudest stretches, plus transitions. Watch for the rain bed, drone or other background sound swelling during quiet sections, or for abrupt level changes and pumping.
- Read the filter summary: retain the output so you can inspect the reported normalization result and mode while evaluating the stream.
Single-pass normalization is suitable for a live stream, but dynamic processing responds to changes in the program. A steady soundscape can still contain sudden foreground events or transitions, so a single setting should not be assumed to sound natural without listening.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -af "loudnorm=I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2:print_format=json" -f null -
Record the JSON values named input_i, input_lra, input_tp, input_thresh and target_offset. Those reported values feed the second pass.
2. Render using the measured values
Replace each uppercase token below with its corresponding numeric result. The filter parameter labels are different from the JSON labels: map input_i to measured_I, input_lra to measured_LRA, input_tp to measured_TP, input_thresh to measured_thresh, and target_offset to offset.
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -af "loudnorm=I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2:measured_I=INPUT_I:measured_LRA=INPUT_LRA:measured_TP=INPUT_TP:measured_thresh=INPUT_THRESH:offset=OFFSET:linear=true:print_format=summary" -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k -ar 48000 output.mp4
Do not leave the uppercase tokens in the command. FFmpeg requires all four measured inputs for linear mode. After rendering, inspect the summary and confirm that it actually selected linear mode; it may revert to dynamic mode if the target LRA is below the measured source LRA or the loudness change would violate the requested true-peak ceiling. 3. Adapt output for the destination
The example copies the video stream and encodes audio as AAC at 192 kbps and 48 kHz. For a WAV delivery, change the codec and output options for the intended WAV format rather than keeping video-container options. YouTube’s official upload guidance recommends AAC-LC audio at 128–256 kbps and a sample rate of 44.1 or 48 kHz; these are delivery recommendations, not LUFS targets. YouTube upload encoding settings
Check the render and the YouTube playback
- Listen across the whole soundscape: check quiet and loud sections, transitions and any foreground sounds that might become distracting after normalization.
- Measure the rendered output: run
loudnormagain in summary or JSON mode. Verify output loudness, true peak and the selected normalization mode against your intended targets. - Check mono compatibility: listen to a mono fold-down. YouTube warns that stereo audio that folds down poorly can lose quality or be muted on devices that convert stereo playback to mono. YouTube upload encoding settings
- Inspect playback behavior: where available, turn Stable volume off temporarily to evaluate the mix without that player feature. YouTube says Stable volume balances quiet and loud ranges and may not be available for every video. YouTube Stable volume
- Use Stats for Nerds as a diagnostic: it can help investigate playback, but it does not establish a universal loudness target. YouTube Stats for Nerds
YouTube says it may apply audio enhancements, and viewer settings can affect playback. Creator-side normalization therefore cannot guarantee the same perceived dynamics on every account or device. YouTube audio enhancements
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTroubleshoot common normalization problems
The second pass reports dynamic mode instead of linear
Check that all four measured parameters are populated with the first pass’s numeric results and that the labels are spelled correctly. If they are, the target may be incompatible: FFmpeg can fall back when the requested LRA is below the measured source LRA or when the loudness change would exceed the true-peak target. Review the summary rather than assuming linear=true guarantees linear processing.

The ambience pumps or swells
Listen for dynamic gain movement around changing passages, especially when foreground sounds appear or disappear. Reassess whether the targets suit the source; do not simply raise the target to make a quiet stream louder. For a finished file, compare a two-pass render and inspect the mode and output measurements.
The rendered file misses the intended level or peak ceiling
Measure the output again and check the normalization summary. Confirm the target values were passed as intended and, in the two-pass command, that each measured value was copied into the correct filter parameter. Do not treat a player diagnostic as evidence of an official YouTube LUFS target.
Stereo sounds weak or different on some devices
Check a mono fold-down for phase cancellation or an unbalanced ambience layer. YouTube specifically cautions that stereo audio which folds down poorly can lose quality or be muted on mono-converting devices. YouTube upload encoding settings
