To make wedding videos smaller for YouTube, export them as MP4 with H.264 video, keep the recording’s original frame rate, and adjust the video bitrate—not the audio bitrate first. Use an audio format and sample rate YouTube supports, then listen to the exported file before uploading. No export setting can guarantee that a compressed file will sound or look indistinguishable from its source.

“YouTube Live playlist” can mean either a playlist of uploaded wedding films or an actual live broadcast. For uploaded films, compress each video, upload it, and add it to a YouTube playlist. If you mean a live event, use the separate encoder settings below; a playlist does not itself make uploaded videos into a live broadcast.

Choose the right workflow: uploaded playlist or live broadcast?

If you have finished wedding films or recordings, they are ordinary video uploads, even if you organize them in a playlist or intend to play them continuously. Compress each file before uploading, then select an existing playlist or create one in YouTube Studio during the upload flow. YouTube’s upload instructions cover adding videos to playlists: Upload YouTube videos – Computer.

If you are transmitting a ceremony or reception as it happens, that is a live stream. It requires an encoder sending a live signal to YouTube; the upload bitrates for a finished video do not apply. The live-stream guidance is covered separately below.

Recommended export settings for a wedding video upload

YouTube’s current upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, variable bitrate, and a frame rate matching the original recording. It recommends 48 kHz audio and lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio as supported audio choices. See YouTube recommended upload encoding settings. These are recommendations, not a promise that a particular export will be visually identical to your original.

Setting Practical choice Why it matters
Container MP4 A recommended upload format for YouTube.
Video codec H.264 A recommended codec for ordinary uploads.
Scan Progressive Matches YouTube’s upload recommendation.
Frame rate Keep the rate used in the source recording. Converting frame rates can alter motion; wedding footage may include fast movement such as dancing or camera pans.
Video bitrate Use the SDR reference values below as a starting point, then judge a representative export. This is the main export control for reducing video file size. The suitable value depends on resolution, frame rate, detail, motion, and source quality.
Audio Use a supported format, preferably at 48 kHz; avoid lowering its bitrate solely because you are reducing video size. YouTube says audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution.

YouTube’s SDR upload bitrate references

The following values are YouTube’s current, undated Help recommendations for SDR uploads, retrieved October 3, 2026. They are not minimum requirements, independently measured thresholds, or guarantees of a particular result.

Resolution Standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) High frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps)
720p 5 Mbps 7.5 Mbps
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
2160p (4K) 35–45 Mbps 53–68 Mbps

YouTube recommends 384 kbps for stereo audio uploads. That is an audio recommendation, not a video bitrate, and it does not rise or fall with the video’s resolution. A larger audio bitrate can increase file size slightly, but reducing it is not the first step to take when a wedding film is too large.

Compress the file while protecting the sound

  1. Start with the best source you have. Export from the editing project or original camera files rather than compressing an already compressed delivery copy, when possible. Each lossy re-encode can discard information.
  2. Set the video export. Choose MP4 and H.264, progressive scan, and the source frame rate. Select the source resolution you want to publish, then use YouTube’s SDR bitrate table as a starting point. A lower video bitrate generally reduces file size but can soften fine detail or make motion look blocky, especially in dim reception footage, confetti, foliage, or a busy dance floor.
  3. Keep audio settings independent. Retain the source audio track where the editor allows it, use a supported codec and 48 kHz sample rate, and avoid an unnecessary low audio bitrate. If the audio is stereo, YouTube’s upload page lists 384 kbps as its recommended upload bitrate.
  4. Export a representative short section first. Include vows or speeches, music, transitions, and a movement-heavy section. Listen with headphones and inspect the picture at full size. If the picture is acceptable but the file is still too large, try a modest reduction in video bitrate and compare again; do not repeatedly re-encode the whole film to test settings.
  5. Check the finished file before upload. Play the exported file from beginning to end if practical, paying attention to sync, clipped speech, abrupt level changes, and music transitions. Confirm that stereo still sounds balanced and that no section is unexpectedly silent.
  6. Upload and organize it. In YouTube Studio, start an upload and select an existing playlist or create one in the upload flow. YouTube’s upload help describes the workflow and playlist selection: Upload YouTube videos – Computer.

Check phase and mono compatibility in mixed wedding audio

Wedding edits may combine a camera microphone, a recorder on the officiant, a DJ feed, and music. YouTube Help warns that poor mono compatibility can cause mono conversion to reduce audio quality or mute audio; it says this can happen when several recordings are used and advises ensuring the audio is in phase. This does not mean every wedding edit has a phase problem. It does make a mono check worthwhile when sources have been mixed: listen to the export in mono, as well as in stereo, and correct phase or routing issues in the editor before publishing. See Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads on YouTube.

When to use YouTube’s audio troubleshooting settings

YouTube’s troubleshooting page separately suggests checking H.264 video, AAC-LC audio, AAC-LC audio bitrate of 128–256 kbps, a 44.1 or 48 kHz sample rate, and the original video size when upload audio or video has problems. Those are troubleshooting checks, not a replacement for the upload-settings page’s 384 kbps stereo upload recommendation. The two pages address different contexts; do not treat the troubleshooting range as proof that every export should be set to that bitrate.

If a high-resolution upload appears soft or is not yet available at the intended quality, allow processing time: YouTube notes that higher resolutions can take several hours to process. Check the video again after processing completes. For format and source-quality guidance, see Video and audio formatting specifications.

If you mean a live wedding broadcast

For an actual live ceremony, use YouTube’s live encoder guidance rather than the upload table above. YouTube recommends matching the stream to your available upload bandwidth, using constant bitrate (CBR), and setting keyframes at two-second intervals without exceeding four seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS, its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; supported audio codecs are AAC or MP3, and the guidance allows up to 60 fps. Consult the current Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page for the full settings and current recommendations.

As a specific reference, YouTube lists 14 Mbps ingestion for H.264 at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. These are live ingestion recommendations, not the upload bitrates for a pre-recorded wedding video. In the live context, YouTube recommends 128 kbps stereo audio or 384 kbps for 5.1 surround audio. The right configuration also depends on stable available upload bandwidth and the encoder you use.

  1. Run a speed test where the event will be streamed and choose settings that fit stable upload capacity, leaving headroom rather than relying on a peak result.
  2. Set the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to the intended broadcast, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds without going beyond four seconds.
  3. Make a representative test stream before the event, including speech, music, camera movement, and any audio sources that will be used. YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream.
  4. Monitor stream health during the broadcast. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, reduce the streaming load or improve the connection instead of assuming that upload-file compression settings will fix a live transmission.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded wedding videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload at its existing quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

Common problems and fixes

  • The file is still too large: Reduce video bitrate in a small step, or choose a lower output resolution if that trade-off is acceptable. Keep the frame rate matched to the recording and do not cut audio quality automatically; export and compare a representative section before processing the full film.
  • Speech or music sounds worse after export: Compare the exported file with the source, check the selected audio codec and sample rate, and avoid repeated lossy exports. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends 48 kHz; its troubleshooting guidance also lists 44.1 kHz.
  • Audio becomes thin, quiet, or disappears in mono: Check mono compatibility and phase across the mixed recordings in the editing project. YouTube notes that mono conversion can reduce quality or mute audio when compatibility is poor.
  • Audio and picture are out of sync: Check the export and the editing timeline before uploading. Confirm that the export uses the intended source frame rate and that audio has not been shifted while mixing or trimming.
  • The high-resolution version is not ready immediately: Wait for YouTube processing to finish; higher resolutions can take several hours. Recheck playback after processing rather than judging solely from an early lower-resolution version.
  • A live stream buffers or loses health: Compare the encoder bitrate with stable upload bandwidth, reduce the stream bitrate if necessary, and verify the keyframe interval and CBR setting. Test the exact audio and motion conditions before the event.

Copyright and music in wedding films

Having permission to film a ceremony does not automatically establish permission to upload every song recorded at it. Check that you have the rights or permissions needed for music and other third-party material in the finished video, and review YouTube’s notices or restrictions if they appear. This article does not establish whether a specific track is cleared or predict how YouTube will handle it. YouTube’s separate lossless-audio guidance for Content ID music-video partners is expressly a partner-delivery context, not a general requirement for ordinary wedding uploads: Encoding specifications for music videos.
