To shrink a large video on a Windows PC, make a separate MP4 copy encoded with H.264 video and AAC audio, keep the original frame rate and aspect ratio, then check the result before uploading. Compression can reduce file size, but it cannot promise identical quality. YouTube’s upload limit is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less, so first check whether you need to compress at all.

Check whether the video needs compression

YouTube allows uploads up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever limit is reached first. Accounts must be verified to upload videos longer than 15 minutes. For files larger than 20 GB, YouTube advises using an up-to-date browser. These are YouTube’s general upload rules; the cited guidance does not establish a separate limit for India. YouTube Help: upload videos longer than 15 minutes

  • If your file is within the size and duration limits, you can upload it without compressing it.
  • If it exceeds a limit, shorten or compress it. YouTube specifically recommends using video-editing software to compress an oversized file with H.264.
  • Check the account verification requirement if the video is longer than 15 minutes.

YouTube accepts many formats, including MOV, MPEG, MP4, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GPP, WebM, DNxHR, ProRes, CineForm and HEVC. You do not have to convert a file just because it is not MP4. Audio-only MP3, WAV and PCM files cannot be uploaded as videos. YouTube Help: supported YouTube file formats

Choose compression settings that suit the video

A broadly compatible choice for a new upload is MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio. YouTube’s encoding guidance also recommends progressive scan, preserving the source frame rate, and a 48 kHz audio sample rate. YouTube Help: recommended upload encoding settings

Keep the resolution and frame shape unless you have a reason to change them

Retaining the source resolution preserves its available detail. Lowering resolution can reduce file size, but also reduces the maximum playback detail. Keep the source aspect ratio; YouTube’s player adapts to different ratios, and 16:9 is standard on computers. Avoid adding black bars or padding to force a different shape. YouTube Help: video aspect ratio and resolution

Use bitrate recommendations as a reference, not a file-size cap

YouTube says there is no required bitrate limit for uploads. Its recommended bitrates for SDR video are:

Resolution Standard frame rate High frame rate
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p 16 Mbps 24 Mbps
2160p (4K) 35–45 Mbps 53–68 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended upload bitrates, not guaranteed file sizes or a promise of a particular visual quality. HDR recommendations differ: for 1080p, YouTube lists 10 Mbps at standard frame rates and 15 Mbps at high frame rates; for 2160p, it lists 44–56 Mbps and 66–85 Mbps, respectively. Use the recommendations for the matching resolution, frame-rate category and SDR/HDR type. YouTube Help: recommended upload encoding settings

A lower bitrate usually creates a smaller file but increases the risk of visible artifacts; a higher bitrate retains more data but may leave the file large. H.264 is YouTube’s stated route for compressing an oversized upload. Although YouTube also accepts HEVC, the available guidance does not establish that one codec will always produce a smaller file at the same visible quality.

Understand the size and quality tradeoff

Bitrate-based encoding targets a data rate. HandBrake’s Constant Quality control is a different way to guide encoding; a quality-slider value does not map one-to-one to YouTube’s bitrate table. There is no single universal HandBrake quality number established for every livestream recording. Preserve the original and inspect an encoded copy at the level of detail that matters to you.

Compress the video with HandBrake on Windows

HandBrake is a free, open-source video transcoder available for Windows, macOS and Linux. Download it through the official HandBrake downloads page, rather than a third-party download site. The steps below describe a general workflow; exact labels can vary by HandBrake version.

  1. Check the source. Note the original file size, duration, resolution, frame rate and aspect ratio. Make sure the Windows PC has enough free disk space for a separate output file.
  2. Keep the original untouched. Create a copy or plan to save the encoded result under a new name and in a different location. This gives you a fallback if the output is unsuitable.
  3. Open the file in HandBrake. Load the video you want to compress and choose a destination filename and folder for the new file.
  4. Set the output format and codecs. Choose MP4 as the container, H.264 for video and AAC audio for a general-purpose YouTube upload. Use progressive scan if the controls expose that setting.
  5. Preserve frame rate and shape. Keep the source frame rate and aspect ratio. Start with the source resolution; reduce it only if a smaller output is worth the loss in maximum playback detail.
  6. Choose a rate-control approach. If setting a bitrate, use the matching YouTube recommendation above as a starting reference, not a maximum. If using Constant Quality, understand that its value is not a conversion of YouTube’s bitrate recommendation; choose a setting, encode a copy and inspect it.
  7. Encode and review. Start the encode, then check the output’s duration, picture and sound, and compare its file size with the original. If the picture is visibly damaged or the sound is missing, adjust the settings and encode again from the original.
  8. Upload in YouTube Studio. Upload the reviewed output. If 1080p, 4K or another higher playback quality is not available immediately, YouTube says higher-quality processing can take several hours. YouTube Help: troubleshoot video upload issues

HandBrake includes hardware-encoding presets when compatible media hardware and drivers are available. Its project says those presets are disabled when the relevant hardware or drivers are missing or outdated. Hardware encoding prioritizes speed and need not produce results identical to software encoding. HandBrake documentation: performance and hardware encoding

Plan for encoding and uploading separately

Encoding happens locally on the PC; uploading transfers the finished file over your internet connection. The time for either depends on factors such as the video, computer and connection, so there is no India-specific upload-speed estimate established here. To estimate transfer time, use your own sustained upload speed and the output file size, allowing for connection variation. YouTube recommends an up-to-date browser for files larger than 20 GB.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The upload is rejected for size or duration: Check both limits—256 GB and 12 hours—and remember YouTube applies whichever limit is less. Compress or shorten the video if it exceeds one.
  • A video longer than 15 minutes will not upload: Check that the YouTube account is verified; YouTube’s default limit for an unverified account is 15 minutes.
  • The upload fails on a file over 20 GB: Try again with an up-to-date browser, as YouTube advises.
  • The output is much smaller but looks worse: The encode may be too aggressive. Return to the original and try a higher bitrate or a less restrictive quality setting; do not keep re-encoding the already compressed copy.
  • The output still seems too large: Consider a lower bitrate or resolution, recognizing that either can reduce visual detail. First check whether the file actually exceeds YouTube’s limit.
  • The frame is distorted or has unnecessary bars: Preserve the source aspect ratio and avoid baking black bars or padding into the video.
  • Higher playback resolutions are missing after upload: Allow processing time; YouTube says 1080p and 4K processing can take several hours.
  • HandBrake hardware presets are unavailable: The required hardware or drivers may be missing or outdated; software encoding remains an option.
