Then look beyond raw totals: calculate subscriber gains per published video and per hour streamed, and read those figures alongside views, watch time and— for Live—concurrent viewers. These per-output rates are your own calculations, not official YouTube metrics or benchmarks. No reviewed official source establishes that 24/7 streams or uploads generally grow Indian channels faster; the answer depends on your channel’s data.
Start with a matched-period comparison in YouTube Studio
In YouTube Studio, open Analytics > Content and select the Subscribers report. Choose a date window that is identical for Live and Videos and long enough to reduce the influence of one unusually successful upload or stream. YouTube describes the report as helping creators understand “what content performs best at turning viewers into subscribers.” YouTube’s content performance help explains the report and expanded analytics.
- Set the date range for the comparison, and keep it unchanged while reviewing both formats.
- Record subscriber gains attributed to Live and Videos.
- For context, record views, watch time and content published for the same period. If you need a more specific report, use SEE MORE or Advanced Mode to explore, compare or export data.
- Keep the comparison at channel level when the question is how each format contributes to the channel’s subscribers overall.
Normalize for different publishing opportunities
A 24/7 stream is available for many more hours than an individual upload, so its raw subscriber total cannot by itself show which format converts more efficiently. Use two clearly labelled calculations based on your own channel data:
- Video-attributed subscriber gains Ă· number of videos published in the selected period.
- Live-attributed subscriber gains Ă· hours streamed in that period.
These are complementary views, not directly interchangeable rates: one is per published video and the other is per streaming hour. They are not YouTube-defined metrics, and they should not be presented as industry benchmarks. Include the underlying gains and denominators so a reader can see how you arrived at each figure.

Put live exposure and audience activity in context
For a continuous broadcast, note total hours streamed and, where useful, average and peak concurrent viewers. YouTube Studio provides channel-level concurrency and hours-streamed measures; stream-specific concurrent viewers are also available. Concurrency describes simultaneous viewing, not subscribers. Use it alongside subscriber gains, views and watch time to describe the exposure the stream received—not as a substitute for subscriber data. Use processed Analytics for the retrospective answer
Live Control Room is useful for monitoring a broadcast as it happens. For a retrospective comparison, prefer processed YouTube Analytics: YouTube notes that Analytics data is processed and despammed and measures different information from the Control Room. A post-stream subscriber snapshot in a live dashboard is therefore not necessarily the same measure as the channel’s processed Analytics report. Consult YouTube’s explanation of live metrics when interpreting differences.

Understand what subscriber attribution includes
Channel-level subscriber gains and video-filtered gains answer different questions. The YouTube Analytics API’s channel-level subscribersGained metric includes subscriptions across channel surfaces. When the report is restricted to a video, it includes subscriptions from that video’s watch page. The video-filtered figure is narrower; it does not represent every subscription someone may have made after encountering the content elsewhere. YouTube documents these definitions in its Analytics and Reporting API metrics reference.
For the main format comparison, use the channel-level Live and Videos report. Treat video-level figures as a separate, more limited attribution view rather than adding them to—or equating them with—the channel-level total.

Read the result without overclaiming
- If Live has more total gains but fewer gains per streaming hour than Videos has per published upload, report both results; the denominators differ.
- If one format leads in gains, check views and watch time before interpreting the difference. A higher total may reflect greater exposure rather than a stronger subscriber conversion tendency.
- Do not treat concurrent viewers as subscriber counts, or attribute every channel subscription to the last format a viewer encountered.
- Repeat the comparison across a longer or additional matched window if a single breakout upload or unusual stream could dominate the selected period.
YouTube’s official help documents how to inspect these measures, not an India-specific expected growth rate or a general winner between streams and uploads. Report the channel’s own time window, totals and calculations rather than claiming one format inherently works better for Indian channels.
