To let people edit a Spotify playlist, open it and choose Invite collaborators from its three-dot menu. Send the invitation link to the people you want to contribute. Collaborators can add, remove, and reorder tracks; Spotify says invitation links are valid for seven days. A regular playlist share is for listening, not an editing invitation.
Before you invite anyone
Use a playlist you control, and decide whether contributors should be able to remove and rearrange songs as well as add them. Spotify’s current instructions cover its mobile and desktop apps; labels and icons can vary by platform or app version. If you do not see the collaboration option in a browser, try the mobile or desktop app.

- Collaborators can add, remove, and reorder tracks, so this is not an approval queue for suggestions.
- Send the invitation link only to intended contributors. Avoid posting an active invite publicly unless you are comfortable with people joining to edit.
- The current Spotify Support instructions say invite links remain valid for seven days. If a link has expired, create and send a new one.
Spotify does not establish a Premium requirement in its current instructions for this feature. Availability and controls may vary by account, region, playlist state, and app version.
Invite collaborators on iPhone or Android
- Open Spotify and tap Your Library.
- Open Playlists, then choose the playlist you want to share for editing.
- Tap the playlist’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Invite collaborators.
- Choose a messaging or social app to send the invitation, or copy the link and send it directly.
Spotify’s current mobile instructions describe this route; small interface differences between iOS and Android are possible. The invitation link is valid for seven days, according to Spotify Support.

- Click the playlist’s three-dot menu.
- Select Invite collaborators.

These are Spotify’s documented desktop-app steps; do not assume every browser version displays the same controls. The invite link’s seven-day validity also applies to the documented desktop process (Spotify Support).
How a collaborator joins—and how to check it worked
The recipient should open the invitation link and use Spotify to join. Depending on the device, the link may open the app or prompt them to do so; the exact screens can differ. Ask them to make sure they are signed into the Spotify account they intend to use.

- Look for the collaborator’s profile picture beneath the playlist title.
- Have them add a track or make another agreed change, then check whether it appears in the same playlist for both of you.
- Contributor names or avatars may appear beside tracks in interfaces that support that display. Spotify described contributor identification in its 2020 collaborative-playlist announcement, but placement can change.
Sharing a playlist is not the same as inviting an editor
Use Share when people should listen to the playlist. Use Invite collaborators when they should be able to change it. Spotify Community discussions also distinguish ordinary sharing from edit access, but Spotify Support is the better source for current steps (Spotify Community).
| Action | Listen to playlist | Add tracks | Remove or reorder tracks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share playlist | Yes, subject to playlist access and visibility | No editing permission is granted by an ordinary share | No editing permission is granted by an ordinary share |
| Invite collaborator | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Visibility and editing access are separate questions. Do not assume a playlist will appear publicly on your profile just because you invited collaborators. Spotify’s Web API has its own rules: its documentation says API-created collaborative playlists must be private, and that API controls do not manage individual collaborators (Spotify for Developers; Create a Playlist API reference).

Remove someone’s editing access
Spotify documents different removal controls on mobile and desktop. Open the collaborator list from the profile pictures shown beneath the playlist title.
On mobile
- Open the playlist.
- Tap the profile pictures beneath the playlist name.
- Find the person, then tap the three-dot menu beside their name.
- Choose Remove as collaborator.
On desktop
- Open the playlist in Spotify’s desktop app.
- Click the profile pictures beneath the playlist name.
- Click the arrow beside the person’s name.
- Choose Remove as collaborator.
These removal paths are documented by Spotify Support. If a temporary event is over, removing contributors is a practical way to end their editing access.

Troubleshoot missing controls or edit access
“Invite collaborators” is missing
- Open the playlist itself, not a track menu, search result, or playlist preview.
- Try a playlist you own or otherwise control; available actions can depend on ownership and playlist state.
- Update Spotify and try the mobile or desktop app if you were using a browser.
- Check whether the playlist is already collaborative or has unusual privacy settings. Spotify’s interface can vary by platform, account, and region.
If the control remains unavailable, consult Spotify Support rather than relying on an unverified menu path.
The recipient can listen but cannot edit
- Confirm you sent the Invite collaborators link rather than an ordinary share link.
- Check whether the invitation has expired; Spotify says it is valid for seven days.
- Ask the recipient to open the link while signed into the intended Spotify account and, if prompted, open it in the app.
- Check that the person has not been removed from the collaborator list.
If needed, generate a fresh invitation and send it directly. Spotify’s current invite and removal instructions are on its collaborative playlists support page.

Someone made an unwanted change
Remove the collaborator if appropriate, delete unwanted tracks, and restore the desired order manually. If the invitation link may have circulated widely, stop using it and send a new invitation only to intended contributors. Spotify’s cited consumer documentation does not establish a guaranteed revision history or rollback feature.
A change is not appearing
- Reopen or refresh the playlist and check the internet connection.
- Confirm both people are looking at the same playlist, not separate copies.
- Update Spotify and give the change a short time to appear before trying again.
Choose collaboration only when contributors should edit freely
A collaborative playlist works well for a trusted group choosing music for an event, trip, workout, or shared project. It is a poor fit when every suggestion needs approval, different people need different permission levels, or the playlist must be protected from accidental edits. Spotify’s documented consumer controls cover inviting and removing collaborators; they do not promise an approval queue, granular roles, or version history.
For moderated contributions, collect recommendations by message or form and have one person add approved tracks. That is slower, but keeps changes under the owner’s control. Avoid using a collaborative playlist as an unrestricted public submission system unless you are prepared to monitor it.
Collaboration is different from listening together
A collaborative playlist lets people contribute to a playlist over time. It does not start a synchronized listening session. Spotify’s 2020 announcement discussed Group Session separately from collaborative playlists; check Spotify’s current feature information if your goal is to listen together.
For developers: the Web API is not the invite flow
Spotify’s Web API can set a playlist’s collaborative status, but it cannot add or remove individual collaborators. Its documentation says a collaborative playlist created through the API must be private and requires the relevant playlist-modification authorization scopes. These are API rules, not a substitute for the consumer app’s Invite collaborators control. See Spotify’s playlist concepts, Create a Playlist, and Change Playlist Details documentation.
