Choose streaming destinations by matching your intended audience and content to the platforms they use, then verify that your accounts are eligible and your production setup can reach each one. If you plan to simulcast, confirm every platform’s rules, stream-key or RTMP/RTMPS requirements, and your internet upload capacity before announcing the event.
Start with the audience and the stream’s purpose
List the viewers you want to reach and where they already watch live content. Then consider what the event is for: a documentary premiere, an expert discussion, a community Q&A, or a professional presentation may suit different platform audiences. A destination is useful when the intended viewers are there and the format fits that platform’s community and rules.
There is no supported universal ranking of platforms by audience size, reach, or engagement for every creator. Use your own audience knowledge and platform analytics where available rather than assuming one destination is best for everyone.
Compare destinations before committing
| Decision | What to check |
|---|---|
| Audience and content fit | Where does the intended audience already watch? Is the subject and format appropriate for that platform? |
| Eligibility and readiness | Is the account, channel, or Page eligible and enabled for live streaming? Does activation or event scheduling require lead time? |
| Production workflow | Can your encoder or broadcast service send to the destination? Does it need a stream key, RTMP/RTMPS URL, or connected account? |
| Reliability and capacity | Can your internet connection support every simultaneous feed? Are platform stream limits or regional ingest constraints relevant? |
| Interaction and format | Does the destination provide the viewing and interaction experience you want? Check current platform features rather than relying on old assumptions. |
| Rules and discoverability | Do the content rules, audience expectations, and likely discoverability justify maintaining another destination? |
Check access and content rules on each platform
YouTube
YouTube requires a verified channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the day of the event. YouTube’s guidance says destination accounts should be active and in good standing; you may need each destination’s stream key and RTMP server URL. It also says sufficient upload speed is critical for simulcasting. Its Help Center states concurrent limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key; both limits apply, and the official help pages should be checked again before planning around them. Twitch
For an encoder-based Twitch stream, Twitch assigns a unique stream key that authorizes the stream. Treat it like a password: do not share it or show it on screen. Twitch’s setup guidance identifies a stable internet connection and a hardware or software encoding device as setup needs; that does not mean you need a particular physical device simply to choose Twitch as a destination. LinkedIn Live
LinkedIn Live is available only to eligible members and Pages. Custom streaming uses RTMP or RTMPS with an event-specific URL and key from Live Studio; preparation and preview windows differ for verified and unverified Pages, so check the current help guidance before scheduling. LinkedIn says all live content is publicly visible and should suit a professional audience. Its guidelines discourage promotional streams and prerecorded content, and recommend streams last at least 15 minutes; the guidelines page was marked as last updated in 2024, so confirm it before relying on those recommendations. Plan the technical route for simulcasting
Streaming to several platforms at once means delivering the program feed to each destination, either from an encoder that supports multiple outputs or through a broadcast service that distributes the feed. Each destination may need a separate connection setup. YouTube notes that you may need the destination’s RTMP URL and stream key; LinkedIn custom streaming uses RTMP or RTMPS, while Twitch’s encoder workflow uses its unique stream key.

- Confirm access first. Enable live streaming or confirm eligibility on every account, channel, or Page. Allow for YouTube’s first-time activation delay of at least 24 hours.
- Choose the production path. Check whether your encoder or broadcast service supports every intended destination and the connection type each requires. A multistreaming service can simplify distribution, but it does not remove destination-side eligibility or setup requirements.
- Collect connection details securely. Obtain each destination’s stream key and RTMP/RTMPS URL where required. Keep keys private, store them securely, and replace a key if it is exposed.
- Check upload capacity and limits. YouTube warns that sufficient upload speed is critical for simulcasting. Check the current limits for every platform and make sure your chosen workflow can support the planned simultaneous feeds.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal where available. Verify that the picture, sound, and connection reach every destination, then check platform-specific previews and event settings before going public.
Some services support RTMP simulcasting. For example, Livestream documents simulcasting via RTMP and says its direct Facebook integration is no longer supported, recommending custom RTMP instead. That example is a reminder to verify current destination support in the service you choose rather than assuming an integration still works. Livestream’s simulcast guidance
When a multistreaming service helps
A broadcast or multistreaming service may be useful if your production workflow would otherwise require separate platform outputs. LinkedIn’s preferred broadcasting-tools page lists SocialLive, Streamyard, Switcher Studio, and Restream. The list indicates a platform relationship, not a guarantee that a particular tool’s current features, terms, or availability will meet your needs. Verify the service’s current supported destinations, setup steps, and plan requirements before choosing it. LinkedIn’s custom RTMP guidance
