How to Choose a VPS Location for a 24/7 YouTube Stream From India

Mumbai is a sensible first VPS location to test for a 24/7 YouTube stream from India, but sustained route and stream-health tests—not distance—should decide.

Start by testing a Mumbai VPS if your provider offers one, then compare it with Singapore and other locations actually available on that provider. Proximity is only a starting point: the best region is the one that sustains a stable connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint under your real streaming workload. No universal Mumbai-versus-Singapore benchmark establishes a winner.

Why VPS location matters—and what it cannot tell you

A VPS sends your encoded stream from the provider’s network to YouTube. The region can affect the route, latency and consistency of that connection, but a nearby city is not automatically the fastest or most reliable choice. The provider’s network paths and YouTube’s destination endpoint both matter.

Google Cloud lists Mumbai (asia-south1) and Singapore (asia-southeast1) among locations for its Live Stream API. That list is not a VPS availability list, and it does not establish that either location is offered on a given VPS plan or that one performs better for an Indian ISP. Google Cloud’s location guidance concerns its own live-stream service and includes factors such as latency, cost, resiliency and co-location; it is not an India-specific VPS benchmark. Google Cloud Live Stream API locations.

How to compare VPS regions

  1. Check the provider’s actual inventory. Note which VPS locations it currently offers. Do not assume Google Cloud API regions are available from another provider.
  2. Choose candidates. Start with Mumbai if offered; include Singapore or another nearby region the provider offers.
  3. Keep the comparison consistent. Use the same VPS plan class, encoder settings, source video, stream duration and YouTube destination for every candidate. A test with a different workload or endpoint is not a clean comparison.
  4. Test sustained sending, not just a brief speed result. Check upload capacity against your configured bitrate, then run a representative test stream and observe continuity and YouTube stream-health feedback.
  5. Record what matters. Compare route latency and its consistency, packet loss or interruptions if measurable, sustained outbound capacity, provider cost and resiliency/support. Confirm separately that the plan permits continuous streaming workloads and that its bandwidth terms suit your use.
  6. Retest when conditions change. If the provider changes its network, routes change, or stream health deteriorates, repeat the comparison. The cited guidance does not establish a fixed retest schedule.

YouTube recommends checking upload speed, testing with representative audio and movement before an event, and monitoring stream health during it. A single speed test cannot show whether a route will remain stable for a 24/7 broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Set the encoder for a reliable YouTube ingest

Choose bitrate for the stream you actually send

Use YouTube’s current codec-, resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate table rather than applying one figure to every stream. As one concrete reference, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. These are YouTube technical recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS route will sustain the stream. Leave practical headroom above the selected video bitrate for audio and network variation, and verify outbound capacity over a representative duration.

Use supported encoding settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Match the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to the content and the relevant YouTube table; changing the VPS city does not fix an unsuitable encoder configuration.

Prefer RTMPS and test the stream key

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its ingestion documentation explains that RTMPS tunnels RTMP through SSL and describes it as a good choice for most ordinary user content, particularly when lower latency is desired. Use the RTMPS ingest option and the stream key configured in YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it, and replace it in Studio if it is exposed.

Before relying on a VPS for continuous operation, send a private or unlisted test stream with the actual content and settings. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and reports healthy stream status before switching to the intended broadcast. Monitor Studio’s stream-health messages during operation rather than assuming that a successful connection at startup proves uninterrupted delivery. See YouTube Live API ingestion documentation.

Choose latency for the audience, not for a 24/7 label

Latency settings trade delay for playback resilience. YouTube describes low latency as suitable for limited interaction and ultra-low latency for real-time audience engagement. Lower latency reduces read-ahead buffering, so viewers may notice network problems more readily; ultra-low latency can increase buffering. For a continuous documentary or other mostly non-interactive channel, normal latency may be a reasonable stability-oriented choice. Select the setting in YouTube Studio based on how much interaction matters, then test it with the intended VPS route. See YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

  • Choosing by map distance alone: test the actual provider route to YouTube’s ingest endpoint instead of treating Mumbai or Singapore as a proven winner.
  • Assuming a cloud region equals a VPS location: verify the VPS provider’s current inventory and plan terms directly.
  • Trusting one speed-test result: run a sustained, representative test and watch stream health for interruptions.
  • Using too little upload capacity: compare sustained outbound capacity with the chosen bitrate and allow headroom; use YouTube’s current table for the specific codec and output format.
  • Changing several settings at once: hold the workload and encoder configuration constant while comparing regions, so the result points to the region rather than a simultaneous bitrate or latency change.
  • Ignoring continuous-use terms: ask the provider whether its plan allows a 24/7 streaming workload and what bandwidth, support and resiliency limits apply. The cited official guidance does not settle vendor-specific policies.
