For a mostly static devotional-music stream, start with 1080p30 H.264, CBR, at about 8–10 Mbps if your upload connection can sustain it reliably with headroom. This is a practical starting estimate, not a YouTube rule for devotional music: YouTube’s live-ingestion guidance lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30 H.264. If your connection is less capable, try 720p30 at about 4–6 Mbps, then test and monitor the stream before relying on it.
Choose a starting bitrate for your stream
For devotional music accompanied by a still image, lyrics, or other mostly static visuals, 30 fps is usually a sensible choice. A higher frame rate is mainly worth considering when the visual layer has motion that benefits from it. Choose resolution and bitrate together: 1080p carries more visual detail but needs more upload capacity than 720p.

The official figures are YouTube live-ingestion recommendations for H.264, not settings for uploaded video and not measurements of devotional-music quality or viewer satisfaction. The 8–10 Mbps and 4–6 Mbps suggestions are practical inferences, not genre-specific YouTube requirements. YouTube’s live settings vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult its current table for AV1 or H.265/HEVC as well as H.264. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance was checked in 2026.
Account for the connection, not just the encoder
The total bitrate of the outgoing stream must fit within available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom; if you send a primary and backup stream, allow for both streams plus that margin. A fast download result does not establish that the upload connection can carry a steady live stream.

- Check upload capacity and reliability at the location and time you plan to stream.
- Do not set the encoder close to the connection’s practical limit. If capacity is uncertain, lower the resolution or bitrate and test again.
- Remember that a connection disruption can interrupt the stream even when the selected bitrate is within the connection’s nominal capacity.

Set the encoder for YouTube Live
In your encoder, choose a supported live-ingestion protocol and codec. YouTube recommends RTMPS and specifies RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, up to 60 fps. For H.264, set bitrate encoding to CBR and use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance lists AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps.

- Set the output resolution and frame rate, such as 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps or 1280 × 720 at 30 fps.
- Select H.264 and CBR if using the H.264 settings in the table above. Enter the bitrate that your upload connection can reliably carry.
- Set keyframes to every two seconds, without exceeding four seconds.
- Set stereo audio to AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps, following YouTube’s listed audio guidance.
- Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it, then connect it to the live event using the stream key supplied in YouTube Studio.
YouTube transcodes incoming live video into output formats for different devices and network conditions. That helps make a stream available in multiple formats, but it does not remove the need for a stable connection from your encoder to YouTube. Test before depending on a 24/7 stream
Test with audio and movement similar to what viewers will receive; a static test image alone will not expose every issue in the intended stream. YouTube advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.” During the test and operation, monitor stream health and any messages in YouTube Studio.

- Run a test at the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio settings.
- Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages while the test is running.
- If the connection struggles, lower the bitrate or resolution, then test again rather than running near the upload limit.
- Keep monitoring stream health during operation so you can respond to connection or encoder problems.
Common bitrate problems and fixes
Stream health reports instability or the video drops
The connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or it may be disrupted. Check upload capacity and reliability, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and try a lower bitrate or resolution. Test the revised setting before relying on it.
The image looks unnecessarily soft
Check whether you chose 720p when your connection can reliably support 1080p30. If it can, test the 1080p30 starting range and inspect the result. Raising bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain risks instability; more bitrate is not a useful trade if it interrupts the stream.

Considering 5000 kbps for a 24/7 stream
5000 kbps is 5 Mbps. For 1080p30 H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as its minimum, not its recommended rate of 14 Mbps. For 720p30 H.264, YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended, so 5 Mbps falls between those figures. Whether it works reliably depends on the connection and stream conditions; test it and monitor stream health rather than treating the minimum as a guarantee.
Audio or visuals differ from the test
Retest with the intended audio and motion. Confirm the encoder is sending the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and audio configuration, then review YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages.
