Check it in layers: confirm FFmpeg is running, verify it can read its input, then check YouTube’s ingest status, stream health, and broadcast lifecycle. A running process—or a successful one-time probe—does not prove YouTube is receiving a usable feed or that viewers can watch it.
What each check can tell you
| Signal | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg process exists | The local process has not exited. | That it has usable input or is successfully sending output to YouTube. |
ffprobe opens the input and lists streams |
The URL was readable and recognized as media during that probe. | Continued availability, YouTube ingest, or viewer playback. |
YouTube streamStatus=active |
YouTube is receiving encoder data. | That stream health is issue-free or the broadcast lifecycle is live. |
YouTube health status is good or ok |
No issue is present at the corresponding threshold described by the API. | Playback for every viewer or future health. |
Broadcast lifecycle is live |
The broadcast is active on YouTube. | That the local encoder will remain healthy indefinitely. |
| Live Control Room health messages | Current creator-facing stream-health feedback. | A permanent guarantee or diagnostic access to channels you do not control. |
These are separate layers, not interchangeable definitions of “live.” For the exact question “Is YouTube receiving encoder data?”, the relevant API signal is the bound liveStream resource’s status.streamStatus. Google defines active as receiving data via the stream and inactive as not receiving it (YouTube LiveStreams API resource).
Check the stream from the machine running FFmpeg
1. Confirm the process and inspect recent logs
On the host where FFmpeg runs, confirm that the process has not exited, then inspect its recent output or log file. Look for input-open or read errors, disconnects, output failures, and repeated retries. Process-list commands and service-manager screens differ by operating system and deployment, so use the method appropriate to your host.
A process that remains present is only a local signal. It may be stuck, retrying, unable to read its source, or unable to deliver output.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Probe the media input with ffprobe
Use ffprobe with an authorized, accessible input URL to check whether it opens and what media streams it identifies:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json "INPUT_URL"
The JSON output is useful for scripts; the documented options can also show stream information and format details. Replace INPUT_URL with the actual input URL you are permitted to access. An input that cannot be opened or recognized as media returns a positive exit code, but a successful probe proves only that the URL was readable at that moment. Access and probe behavior depend on the URL and protocol. A private YouTube ingest endpoint is not automatically a publicly probeable viewer URL. See the FFprobe documentation.

Check whether YouTube is receiving the feed
3. Read the bound liveStream resource
If you control the channel and have the required YouTube API authorization and resource access, retrieve the liveStream resource bound to the broadcast and inspect status.streamStatus. active means YouTube is receiving encoder data; inactive means it is not. This is a more direct ingest check than observing the local FFmpeg process, but it does not by itself say whether the event is live or whether quality warnings are present.
4. Inspect health and configuration issues separately
Read status.healthStatus.status and configurationIssues[] on the stream resource. The issue details can point to bitrate, codec, frame-rate, keyframe, or ingestion problems. In particular, videoIngestionStarved means incoming video is insufficient for smooth streaming and viewers may experience buffering. noData means YouTube has no health information; it is not affirmative evidence that the stream is healthy. Consult YouTube’s configuration issue definitions for the meanings of specific messages.

Confirm the broadcast is actually live
5. Check the broadcast lifecycle
Inspect the associated liveBroadcast.status.lifeCycleStatus. The value live indicates the event is active. liveStarting is an intermediate state, not a reason to declare failure immediately. YouTube says the transition typically takes 5 to 10 seconds and may take up to a minute, so poll the state before deciding that startup is stuck. actualStartTime becomes available once the broadcast is live; actualEndTime is available once it is complete. See the LiveBroadcasts API resource and YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle guide.
6. Use Live Control Room if you do not want to build an API client
While streaming, the channel owner can check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, which provides health feedback, error messages, and instructions. An external viewer can also check playback on the public watch page as an end-to-end observation, but the watch page does not expose owner-only ingest diagnostics. See YouTube Help’s stream metrics and health guidance.

Monitor an always-on stream over time
A single check is a snapshot. For a continuous stream, schedule repeated checks and alert on a sustained failure rather than treating one transient observation as definitive. Track the layers independently: the FFmpeg process, whether the input can be probed, YouTube’s ingest status, the broadcast lifecycle, and health issues. Choose a tolerance interval that fits the stream’s purpose; the cited documentation does not establish one universal polling interval.

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes HTTP input options for reconnecting after a disconnect, at end-of-file (useful for live or endless streams), and on network errors; it also describes selected HTTP status codes and limits for retry counts or delays. These controls are protocol-specific. Check the help for your installed build and choose options for the actual input protocol rather than copying flags intended for a different one. RTMP is a multimedia transport over TCP/IP, but retry behavior still does not confirm that YouTube is ingesting the feed. A reconnect can help recover transport; it is not a health or viewer-visibility check. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Troubleshoot by the signal that failed
- FFmpeg is absent or exited: inspect the service or process logs for the exit reason, then restart or repair the local process as appropriate.
- FFmpeg exists, but the input probe fails: check that the input URL is correct and accessible to that host, and inspect FFmpeg’s input errors. Remember that protocol and access restrictions affect probing.
- Input is readable, but YouTube reports
inactive: inspect FFmpeg’s output logs and the stream key/output configuration, then verify the stream resource again after correcting any sending failure. - YouTube reports
active, but health issues appear: use the specific configuration issue details to investigate bitrate, codec, frame rate, keyframes, or ingestion conditions. - Health says
noData: do not treat that as “good”; check whether YouTube has enough information yet and consult Control Room or the API again. - The lifecycle remains
liveStarting: allow for the documented transition window and poll again before concluding that the broadcast failed to start. - Control Room or the watch page disagrees with a local check: treat each as a different layer—local process, ingest, health, lifecycle, or playback—and identify which state is actually failing rather than relying on one signal.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should loop uploaded recordings continuously, StreamNeo offers a cloud alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg host yourself: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera streaming. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
