To check whether a biofuel is linked to deforestation, trace the specific fuel back to its biological feedstock and origin, then verify that the supporting certificate and chain-of-custody records cover that feedstock, location and supply chain. A sustainability certificate is evidence to examine, not automatic proof that a particular consignment is deforestation-free. Check direct land conversion separately from the indirect land-use-change risks of crop-based fuels.

Start with the specific fuel and its feedstock

Ask the supplier what biological material was used, where it was grown or collected, who supplied it and which producer converted it into fuel. “Biofuel” alone is too broad to verify: the material and its origin determine which records and sustainability criteria are relevant. A claim about a fuel made from a crop, for example, calls for different origin information than a claim about material collected as a residue. Do not assume that a broad category or product label identifies the feedstock used in a particular batch.

Record the product name and any batch, consignment or transaction identifiers. Those identifiers help you match origin documents to the fuel rather than relying on a general statement about a supplier or certification scheme. For covered liquid and gaseous fuels, the European Commission’s Union Database is designed to trace raw-material consignments through fuel transactions. Ask the supplier which identifier it uses in its own records and how that identifier connects the feedstock to the fuel you are checking.

Be precise about the question you are trying to answer. You may want to know whether a particular feedstock plot was directly converted from forest, whether forest degradation was assessed, or whether the broader production system carries indirect land-use-change risk. These are related but distinct questions, and the same certificate or general sustainability claim may not answer all of them.

Request records that reach the origin

Ask for documentation that connects the fuel to its source and follows it through the relevant supply-chain stages. Depending on the material and claim, useful records may include:

  • Farm, plot, collection-point or other origin documentation.
  • Supplier and transaction records that connect the feedstock to the processor and fuel producer.
  • The sustainability certificate’s name and number, its validity dates, and the scope it covers.
  • A proof-of-sustainability document or record for the relevant consignment, where applicable.
  • The chain-of-custody model and audit or verification records supporting the claim.

Check how far each document traces the material. A record confirming a later processor or custodian does not by itself establish where the feedstock originated. The evidence required depends on the claim being made and the documented scope of the applicable scheme. A certificate number without the relevant scope, date and transaction link is not enough to establish that the document applies to the fuel in front of you.

A useful request is specific rather than generic: ask the supplier to identify the feedstock and its origin, provide the relevant batch or consignment reference, identify the scheme and certificate, state which supply-chain stages the evidence covers, and explain how the land-use claim was assessed. If a record is commercially sensitive, ask whether the supplier or responsible operator can provide a suitable summary or confirm the relevant traceability facts. Do not treat an unavailable document as proof that deforestation occurred; record what information has not been supplied and whether the claim remains unverified.

Origin information can take different forms depending on the feedstock and scheme. It might identify a farm or plot, a collection point, or another defined source. The important test is whether the evidence reaches the origin relevant to the claim and can be linked to the transaction. A list of certified companies may demonstrate that certain businesses participate in a scheme, but it does not by itself show that the specific feedstock used for a particular fuel came from a particular place.

Check whether the certificate matches this supply chain

Look up the scheme’s current recognition and scope, then compare them with the actual fuel and consignment. European Commission recognition listings show that schemes can differ materially in what they cover. A scheme’s general recognition, or its logo on a document, does not establish that a certificate covers this feedstock, geography, transaction or supply-chain stage.

What to verify What a useful match looks like What a mismatch or gap means
Feedstock and fuel The scheme and certificate cover the actual raw material and fuel type. A certificate for a different material or product does not substantiate this fuel’s claim.
Geography and origin The covered area and origin evidence reach the relevant farm, plot or collection point, as applicable. A country-level or processor-level record may not identify the relevant origin.
Supply-chain stages The documented chain covers the relevant suppliers, handling, processing and fuel production. Uncovered stages leave a traceability gap between origin and the fuel.
Consignment and dates Identifiers and certificate validity align with the transaction and the fuel being checked. A valid scheme certificate may still not cover this transaction or its date.
Mixed or unknown-origin material The scheme documents how the material is handled and whether origin can be traced. Ask what proportion and origin are documented; do not treat an unverified share as verified.
Deforestation claim The evidence addresses the relevant land conversion or forest-degradation question and states the applicable reference or cut-off date. A general sustainability claim may not answer whether the land linked to the feedstock was converted.

Use the table as a comparison, not as a substitute checklist that guarantees an answer. The Commission’s voluntary-scheme information describes recognition requirements that include documented information, traceability to feedstock origin and auditing. However, recognition does not make every certificate interchangeable: compare the actual scheme, certificate and supply chain instead of assuming that any recognised logo means the same thing.

Pay particular attention to the distinction between scheme-level coverage and consignment-level evidence. A scheme may be recognised for a relevant purpose, while the document presented to you covers a different product, period, geography or operator. Conversely, a supplier may present a certificate and transaction records that together provide relevant evidence, even if no single document tells the whole story. Follow the references between documents and ask how each one relates to the specific fuel.

Inspect dates, audits and breaks in the chain

Match certificate validity dates to the date of the transaction being claimed, and check that the certificate’s scope was in force for the relevant supply-chain stages. Ask for the audit or verification trail behind the claim, rather than relying only on a certificate number. A certificate that is valid today does not necessarily establish that the relevant transaction or earlier stage was covered on the date it occurred.

The Commission’s recognition criteria include documented information, traceability to feedstock origin, an audit before participation and regular retroactive audits. These features support scrutiny, but you still need to establish that the evidence applies to the particular feedstock and consignment. Note any missing records or unexplained hand-offs; a gap is a reason to seek clarification, not proof by itself that deforestation occurred.

When reviewing the chain, write down the stages it actually documents: origin, supplier, collection or handling, processing, fuel production and transaction. Then note where one document ends and another begins. If the named supplier in a transaction record does not match the company on the certificate, ask the supplier to explain the relationship and provide the record connecting them. If a certificate lists a scope but the transaction falls outside its dates or covered activities, do not silently assume the gap is resolved by the scheme’s general reputation.

Audits are part of the assurance picture, not a replacement for checking scope. Ask what the audit or verification relates to and whether it supports the relevant claim and period. The Commission’s description of scheme requirements includes audits before participation and regular retroactive audits; it does not mean an outside reader can infer that a particular lot has been checked for every possible deforestation pathway simply because an audit exists.

Ask whether the claim concerns direct or indirect land-use change

Direct land conversion and forest degradation

Ask whether the evidence assesses the land from which the feedstock came, what plots or collection areas were assessed, and what reference or cut-off date applies. Also ask whether it addresses forest degradation, not just conversion of forest to another land use. A certificate can provide complementary information, but operators remain responsible for assessing the information and risks relevant to the product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clarify the exact meaning of “deforestation-free” in the claim. Does the assessment cover the identified origin area, the feedstock’s relevant land, or only the certified operator’s procedures? Does it address conversion as well as degradation? What date is used to judge whether land conversion is relevant? Without answers to those questions, a broad phrase may sound more conclusive than the documents support. The European Commission’s guidance on due diligence under the EUDR treats certification as potentially complementary information, while keeping responsibility for product-specific assessment with the operator.

Indirect land-use change

Crop-based biofuel can be produced from crops grown on existing farmland while food or feed production shifts elsewhere. If that displaced production expands into forests, wetlands or peatlands, the fuel may contribute to an indirect land-use-change risk even when its own feedstock plot was not directly deforested. This is a different question from whether the specific plot supplying the fuel was converted.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

For that reason, ask which claim is being made. “The feedstock plot was not directly deforested” does not, on its own, resolve a broader question about indirect land-use change. A reader asking “Is this biofuel deforestation-free?” should look for an answer that identifies which pathway the supplier evaluated, rather than treating a finding about one plot as a complete answer about the broader effects of crop displacement.

Keep the two assessments separate in your notes. For direct conversion, look for evidence tied to the relevant feedstock origin and the land-use reference or cut-off date. For indirect land-use change, identify whether the claim addresses the possibility that crop-based fuel production shifts food or feed production elsewhere. Do not infer that an origin record alone settles that wider issue, and do not infer that an indirect-risk discussion proves that a particular plot was cleared.

Use EU rules only after identifying the product

Renewable Energy Directive sustainability schemes

The EU’s Renewable Energy Directive sustainability framework and its recognised voluntary schemes can help substantiate sustainability claims. Verify the relevant scheme’s current recognition and the certificate’s scope; recognition is not a blanket guarantee about every product or supply chain covered by a scheme.

When comparing a scheme or certificate, check the feedstock and fuel eligibility, geographic scope, origin traceability, covered chain-of-custody stages, certificate dates, audit arrangements, treatment of mixed or unknown-origin material, and the type of land-use claim. These factors matter because schemes have different boundaries. A general statement such as “certified sustainable” leaves unanswered whether the certificate applies to this consignment and whether it addresses direct deforestation, forest degradation or indirect land-use-change risk.

EU Deforestation Regulation

Do not assume the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) automatically applies to every biofuel. Its obligations depend on whether the specific product is listed in Annex I. Identify the actual product and code before concluding that EUDR due diligence applies.

Where the EUDR does apply, certification may be complementary information if it meets the relevant information requirements; it does not replace a product-specific assessment. The European Commission’s implementation guidance says: “Due diligence is not a ‘tick-box’ process, so there is no fixed format or set list of questions that operators must follow.” The practical implication is to assess the actual product and information rather than treating one certificate or a fixed set of supplier answers as a universal pass.

The Commission’s current overview lists staged application dates: 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators, and 30 June 2027 for micro and small operators, with an exception for micro and small operators already covered by the EU Timber Regulation. Certain products added through a 2026 delegated regulation are scheduled to fall under the rules from 30 December 2027. These dates and product details can change, so check the Commission’s current overview before relying on them for a compliance decision.

The Commission also estimated in 2023 that the EUDR was intended to reduce annual carbon emissions linked to EU consumption and production of covered commodities by at least 32 million tonnes per year. This is a stated policy objective, not a measured reduction for one biofuel, an individual supplier, or a certification scheme. It cannot be used as evidence that any particular consignment is free of deforestation links.

Understand what the EU Union Database can and cannot tell you

The European Commission describes the Union Database as covering liquid and gaseous renewable and recycled carbon fuels, including biofuels, and associated raw materials. It excludes solid biomass fuels. For covered consignments, records include transactions and sustainability attributes, such as Proof of Sustainability identifiers and emissions metadata.

The database is available to specified economic operators, voluntary or national schemes, competent authorities and Commission representatives. It is not a public consumer lookup tool for tracing any bottle of fuel or individual purchase. The Commission also says that use is not yet systemic across all covered operators. As a result, lack of public lookup access—or the absence of a record you cannot access—does not establish either compliance or non-compliance. Ask the supplier or responsible operator for the relevant evidence and, where appropriate, the proof-of-sustainability record.

For a consumer, this means the database should not be treated like an open search box where entering a brand or product name reveals a complete land-use history. For an operator with access, a transaction record can contribute to traceability for covered fuels, but it still needs to be interpreted alongside the feedstock, sustainability attributes and relevant origin evidence. Coverage and access limits matter: solid biomass fuels are excluded, and access is restricted to specified participant groups.

If someone says that a fuel is verified because it appears in the database, ask what transaction or sustainability record they mean and whether it refers to the exact consignment. If someone says it is suspicious because you cannot find it through a public search, note that the database is not a public consumer lookup service and that use is not yet systemic across all covered operators. Neither conclusion follows merely from public search availability.

How to judge the answer you receive

  1. Match the records to the fuel. Confirm that product, batch or consignment identifiers connect the documents to the fuel in question.
  2. Follow the chain back. Check that the records reach the relevant farm, plot, collection point or other origin, rather than stopping at a later custodian.
  3. Test the certificate’s scope. Compare feedstock, fuel, geography, stages, dates and handling of mixed or unknown-origin material against the actual supply chain.
  4. Examine the land-use claim. Establish whether it covers direct conversion, forest degradation, indirect land-use change, or only some of these issues, and note any reference date.
  5. Identify the applicable rules. For an EU claim, distinguish RED scheme evidence from EUDR obligations and establish whether the exact product is in EUDR scope.
  6. Request explanations for gaps. Ask for missing origin, transaction, audit or validity information. If a gap cannot be resolved, describe the claim as unverified on the available documents rather than treating a general certificate as conclusive.

A practical way to keep the review clear is to create a short record for each consignment: the fuel and feedstock names, identifiers, stated origin, certificate and scheme, covered dates and stages, source documents received, land-use questions answered, and unresolved gaps. This is not a prescribed format or a guarantee of compliance. It helps distinguish facts supported by records from claims that still need an explanation.

Keep conclusions proportionate to the evidence. If traceability reaches only a processor, you can say that the supplied documents identify the processor but do not establish the feedstock origin. If the certificate is valid but its scope does not match the fuel or transaction, say that the scheme certificate was presented but the match has not been established. If direct conversion is addressed but indirect land-use change is not, state that the evidence addresses the first question only. These are more useful conclusions than a simple “yes” or “no” unsupported by the documents.

What you can conclude

A well-supported answer ties the specific fuel to documented feedstock origin, shows a traceable chain through the relevant stages, and uses a certificate whose scope and dates match that consignment. It also states what kind of land-use risk was assessed. If the evidence stops short of origin or does not address the claim being made, the defensible conclusion is that the available records do not establish whether the biofuel is linked to deforestation.

Certification and traceability tools are ways to assess records, not consumer tests that reveal a fuel’s land-use history by themselves. The official information described here supports checking records, certificates, traceability and due diligence; it does not establish that a consumer test kit, GPS device, sensor or particular book can reliably determine whether a biofuel feedstock is linked to deforestation. For organisations that need to manage evidence across suppliers, certification or audit providers and supply-chain traceability or sustainability recordkeeping services may be relevant categories, but the specific service and its claims still need to be evaluated against the supply chain and applicable scheme.

In short, follow the consignment rather than the slogan: identify the feedstock, confirm its origin, connect the chain-of-custody records, test the certificate’s scope and dates, and define whether the question is about direct conversion, degradation or indirect land-use change. If any of those links is missing, describe the uncertainty precisely instead of turning a general certification claim into proof.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if my biofuel is linked to deforestation?

Ask what feedstock was used and where it came from, then match origin, transaction, certificate and chain-of-custody records to the specific fuel or consignment. Check whether the evidence addresses direct land conversion and forest degradation, and consider indirect land-use-change risk separately for crop-based fuel. If the documents do not reach origin or do not address the claim, the link has not been established by the records supplied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a sustainability certificate prove a biofuel is deforestation-free?

No, not by itself. Check that the scheme is currently recognised for the relevant purpose and that the certificate covers the actual feedstock, geography, transaction dates and supply-chain stages. A certificate is evidence to assess; it may provide complementary information, but it is not automatic proof of every deforestation claim.

How do I check where biofuel feedstock came from?

Request farm, plot, collection-point or other origin documentation, along with supplier and transaction records that connect the feedstock to the processor and fuel producer. Use product, batch or consignment identifiers to link those records to the fuel. A record that stops at a later processor or custodian does not by itself establish the origin.

Can I look up a biofuel in the EU Union Database?

The Commission describes the Union Database as covering liquid and gaseous renewable and recycled carbon fuels, including biofuels, and associated raw materials, but it is not a public consumer lookup tool. Access is for specified economic operators, schemes, authorities and Commission representatives. Its use is not yet systemic across all covered operators, so lack of public lookup access does not show either compliance or non-compliance. Ask the supplier or responsible operator for relevant records.

Does the EU Deforestation Regulation apply to all biofuels?

Do not assume that it does. EUDR obligations depend on whether the exact product is listed in Annex I, so identify the actual product and code before concluding that the regulation applies. Where it applies, certification may be complementary information if it meets the information requirements, not a substitute for product-specific due diligence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between direct deforestation and indirect land-use change for biofuel?

Direct conversion asks whether the land supplying a feedstock was converted from forest or otherwise affected in the relevant way. Indirect land-use change is a separate risk: crop-based biofuel may use existing farmland while food or feed production shifts elsewhere and expands into forests, wetlands or peatlands. Evidence about one feedstock plot does not by itself settle the indirect question.

The Bottom Line

Trace the specific fuel back to its feedstock origin, verify that its certificate and chain-of-custody records match the consignment, and check direct conversion, forest degradation and indirect land-use change as distinct questions. A certificate is evidence to evaluate, not a guarantee; if records stop short of origin or leave the claim unanswered, describe it as unverified rather than conclusive.
