How to Change Videos in a Running YouTube Loop Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To change the video in an encoder-based YouTube loop stream without ending the broadcast, switch the active scene or video source in the encoder that is sending the stream. Keep the encoder connected and transmitting, then check the live picture and sound. YouTube Studio manages stream details and provides the stream URL and key; YouTube’s general instructions do not describe a universal Studio control for replacing the video source midstream.

Change the video without ending the broadcast

  1. Find the encoder that is currently live. YouTube’s encoder workflow connects the encoder to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. Keep that encoder running if you want the existing broadcast to continue. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  2. Prepare the replacement source or scene in the encoder. Use the encoder’s own production controls to select the video you want to send. The names and behavior of those controls vary by application or device; YouTube’s general setup guide does not provide click-by-click instructions for every encoder.
  3. Check the encoder preview. Confirm that the intended video is ready before making it the live output. YouTube recommends testing the setup and checking the preview before starting a stream; applying those checks after a source change is a practical way to catch mistakes. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
  4. Switch the active output. Use the encoder’s scene or source controls to send the replacement video. The broadcast can continue as long as the encoder keeps sending content.
  5. Verify the live result. Check the actual YouTube stream—not only the encoder preview—to confirm the picture changed as intended and the sound is correct. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality while live. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips

Where to switch the source—and where not to

In an encoder-based setup, the encoder produces the feed YouTube receives. Use the encoder’s source-selection or scene controls to change the outgoing video; YouTube Studio’s stream details and connection settings are not a universal midstream source switch. YouTube’s setup instructions explain that stopping the encoder’s output ends its transmission to YouTube. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

If a third-party playback or playlist service generates your loop stream, its own controls may differ. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not document those services’ source-switching steps, so consult the service’s instructions rather than assuming the encoder workflow applies.

Keep the same broadcast running

Do not stop the encoder’s output if the goal is to keep the current broadcast alive. YouTube’s encoder workflow ends the live transmission when you stop sending content from the encoder. Make the change within the active production setup, then confirm that the encoder continues transmitting and the live page still shows the expected video. • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Does RTMP or HLS change how you switch videos?

No: protocol choice affects delivery behavior, not which application controls the video source. YouTube supports RTMP(S) and HLS workflows. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream, which can make the viewer-facing change appear later; the source is still selected in the production workflow sending the feed. The cited YouTube guidance does not say that changing a source requires switching protocols. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips

Choosing an encoder for a more complex production

YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. Choose based on whether the encoder can handle your planned sources and production complexity, whether you can test and monitor the output reliably, and whether you need external audio or video hardware. YouTube describes encoders as useful for advanced productions and external hardware, while noting that expensive equipment is not required to get started; it recommends professional-grade hardware for events that need higher production value. Troubleshooting a video that will not change

  • The old video remains live: Check that you switched the encoder’s active output, not only its preview or a source that is not on the live scene. Confirm the new scene or source is actually being sent.
  • The encoder preview is right, but YouTube is not: Verify the encoder is still connected and transmitting, then check the live stream again. A viewer-facing change may be delayed, particularly with HLS, which has higher latency than continuous RTMP.
  • The picture changes but audio is wrong or missing: Check the active scene’s audio source and monitor the live output after switching. YouTube recommends monitoring both audio and video while live. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
  • The broadcast ended: Check whether the encoder stopped sending content. YouTube’s encoder instructions say that stopping the encoder output ends the transmission. Restarting may create a new broadcast rather than continue the same one; the cited general guidance does not establish a universal recovery procedure for every encoder or stream configuration.
  • You cannot find the right control: Look in the encoder’s production or scene controls. Exact labels and steps depend on the encoder, and YouTube’s general guide does not define a single set of source-switch instructions for all applications and devices.
