Change a 24/7 YouTube music stream’s thumbnail in YouTube Studio—not in your encoder. For a scheduled or active stream, open Create > Go live > Manage, select the stream, and look in its Edit, details, or customization controls for the thumbnail setting. Upload the image and save. You generally do not need to stop the live feed just to change its preview image.
Change the thumbnail on a scheduled or active stream
- Open YouTube Studio. Sign in to the channel that owns or manages the stream, then select Create > Go live.
- Find the stream. In Live Control Room, open Manage and select the scheduled or ongoing broadcast you want to edit. YouTube documents Manage as the place to access scheduled streams. See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Open its edit controls. Select Edit, or open the stream’s details or customization view. Find the thumbnail setting, choose the image file, and save. The precise label and placement can vary by stream type and Studio interface.
- Check the result. Look at the stream listing in Studio and its watch page. The new image may not appear immediately; YouTube does not give a fixed display-update time.
YouTube’s general custom-thumbnail workflow is Studio > Content, select the video, open Thumbnail, choose Upload file, then select Save. If you do not see a thumbnail field in Live Control Room, check the selected stream’s details or customization controls; the standard video workflow may be more applicable to a saved video than to a live stream. The labels can vary, so do not assume there is one universal thumbnail button. See Add custom thumbnails on YouTube.
Change the thumbnail on a completed stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Content > Live.
- Select the stream replay or archive you want to update.
- Open its details, find Thumbnail, upload the replacement image, and save. If the thumbnail control is not visible, check the video’s edit details and the general custom-thumbnail steps above.
- Check Studio and the watch page for the updated image; allow for a delay before it appears.

Thumbnail versus the live video feed
The thumbnail is stream metadata: it is the image viewers see as the stream’s preview. It is separate from the video and audio sent by your encoder, as well as the stream key and server URL. Changing a scene, replacing the incoming feed, or editing encoder output is not the way to update the watch-page thumbnail. YouTube documents metadata controls separately from encoder settings in Manage live stream settings.

YouTube’s guidance does not say that you must end a live broadcast to change its thumbnail. Avoid stopping an active encoder solely for this edit unless your own stream controls or account show a specific reason to do so.
What to know about a continuous 24/7 broadcast
Do not assume a single replay will preserve the entire run of a continuous broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 stream therefore should not be treated as one guaranteed, complete archive. This archive limit is separate from changing the thumbnail: use the stream’s metadata controls for the preview image, and manage any available replay under Content > Live. See Archive live streams.

If the thumbnail does not change
- The old image is still showing: YouTube says an update can take time to appear, but does not specify a wait duration. Check both the Studio listing and watch page again later.
- You cannot find a thumbnail field: Confirm you selected the right stream in Create > Go live > Manage, then inspect its edit, details, or customization controls. For a completed stream, look under Content > Live and open the archive’s details.
- You changed the encoder scene but not the preview: The encoder feed and thumbnail metadata are separate. Return to the stream’s YouTube Studio edit controls.
- You are trying to update an old broadcast: Make sure you have opened the replay/archive in Studio rather than a scheduled or active stream, and use its video details.
Before going live, YouTube recommends previewing the stream in Live Control Room and checking that audio and video work. That is a separate stream-quality check, not a requirement for editing the thumbnail. See YouTube live streaming tips.
