In CapCut, select the video clip, open Speed, then choose Normal for one constant speed or Curve for a speed ramp. The control is available in CapCut’s mobile, desktop, and web editors, although its exact location can change with the platform and app release. CapCut describes the core speed tool as free; separate effects, AI features, templates, storage, or export options may have different requirements.

Change video speed in CapCut on mobile
CapCut documents this workflow for both iPhone and Android.
- Open CapCut and tap New project.
- Choose a video and add it to the timeline.
- Tap the video clip in the timeline.
- Tap Speed in the bottom toolbar. Scroll the toolbar if the control is off-screen.
- Choose Normal for a constant rate or Curve for changing speeds within the clip.
- Adjust the slider or curve, preview the result, and tap Export.

Normal speed
Normal applies one rate to the entire selected clip. A setting below 1× lengthens the clip; a setting above 1× shortens it. It is the simplest choice for dialogue, tutorials, screen recordings, or footage that should run uniformly at 0.5×, 1.5×, 2×, or another rate.

Curve speed
Curve changes playback speed at different points in the same clip. Select a preset or a custom curve, then move points on the graph. The graph’s upper area represents faster playback and its lower area slower playback. CapCut describes a custom desktop workflow reaching approximately 10× faster and 0.1× slower, but limits can differ by platform and release: CapCut’s velocity guide.
Change video speed in CapCut on desktop
- Open CapCut for desktop and click Import.
- Choose the file and drag it onto the timeline.
- Select the clip.
- Open Speed in the editor controls or right-side panel. The placement can vary by release.
- Use Normal for a uniform adjustment or Curve for a speed ramp.
- Preview the timeline and click Export.
The documented import, timeline, speed, and export sequence is covered in CapCut’s desktop and mobile guide. Desktop or web editing generally gives you more room for precise curve points and longer projects than a phone.
Change video speed in CapCut online
- Open the CapCut online editor.
- Upload a file from your computer, or use an available Google Drive or Dropbox import.
- Place the video on the timeline and select the clip.
- Open Speed in the editor panel.
- Adjust the slider or choose a curve.
- Click Export, choose the available output settings, then download or share the file.
Browser performance, upload time, account access, and available controls can vary.

Change the speed of only part of a video
Speed applies to the selected timeline segment. Split the clip first when only one moment should change.
- Place the playhead at the beginning of the target section and choose Split.
- Move the playhead to the end of that section and split again.
- Select the isolated middle segment.
- Open Speed and choose Normal or Curve.
The surrounding segments retain their original speed. Recheck transitions, overlays, music, and captions because the changed segment now has a different duration. CapCut’s product documentation lists split and speed editing across its supported surfaces: TikTok’s CapCut feature documentation.
Create a speed ramp or “velocity” effect
- Select the clip and open Speed.
- Choose Curve.
- Pick a preset or select Custom/Customized, depending on the interface.
- Add, remove, and move points on the graph to control when the clip accelerates or slows.
- Place the slowest point on the action you want viewers to notice.
- Preview repeatedly, aligning changes with a beat, gesture, or camera movement.
Use fewer points and spread transitions over more frames for a smoother ramp. A sudden jump from very slow to very fast can be intentional, but it usually feels abrupt when the graph changes sharply.

Practical starting speeds

These are editing starting points, not CapCut specifications. Preview the complete sequence before choosing a final rate.

At a constant rate, slowing increases duration and speeding decreases it. A curve can change the timing of different moments within one clip. That can move music beats, transitions, graphics, and subtitles out of alignment.
The associated audio normally changes timing too. Voices may sound stretched, compressed, unnaturally high, or unnaturally low; music and effects may no longer fit the edit. If the result is unusable, detach or mute the original audio, establish the final video timing, then add music or sound effects. Record or import narration after the speed edit when possible. Use a pitch- or voice-preservation option only if it is actually visible in your version; CapCut does not expose identical controls on every platform. For auto-captions, regenerate them after finalizing speed when practical. Otherwise, inspect and reposition caption blocks manually.
Make slow motion look smoother
- Start with footage recorded at a higher frame rate when you expect substantial slowdown.
- Use a less aggressive rate if the source was recorded at a low frame rate.
- Fast camera movement, motion blur, and poor lighting can make artifacts more visible.
- Distinguish a lagging preview from a defective export by testing a short section.
- Use CapCut’s smooth-slow-motion or optical-flow-style processing only if that feature appears in your version; availability and results are version-, platform-, and plan-dependent.
Exporting at a higher frame rate cannot recreate every frame missing from the original. CapCut warns that excessive slowdown, especially with low-frame-rate footage, can look choppy or degraded: CapCut’s guidance.

- Select the actual video segment, not text, a sticker, transition, effect, or another layer.
- Scroll the mobile toolbar horizontally or leave a nested sub-menu to return to the main controls.
- Check whether the selected item is a photo, GIF, animated asset, or template element. A still image has no playback speed; change its timeline duration instead.
- Try the same file in a blank project.
- Restart or update CapCut, or test the desktop or web editor if the control remains absent.
Template projects can restrict editing controls, and an animated asset may expose different options from a standard video clip.

Export after changing speed
- Preview the entire timeline at normal playback, not only while scrubbing.
- Confirm that the intended clip or segment—not a neighboring timeline item—is selected during editing.
- Click or tap Export.
- Choose resolution and frame rate appropriate for the source and destination, where those options are offered.
- For a complex curve, heavy effects, or high-resolution footage, export a short test first and inspect the downloaded file.
Playback speed, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are different settings. Changing speed alone does not change the pixel resolution, while export compression and unsuitable settings can affect perceived quality. Common problems and fixes
The whole video changed instead of one moment
Split at the start and end of the desired section, then select only that segment before opening Speed.
The speed ramp feels abrupt
Use fewer curve points, spread transitions across more frames, and preview at full playback speed.
Audio sounds distorted
Detach, mute, or replace the original audio; add music after timing is settled; re-record narration if necessary.
Export or preview lags
Export a short section, reduce unnecessary effects, close other applications, and try the desktop app instead of browser editing for a large project. Compare the downloaded file with the preview to determine whether the problem is playback performance or the render itself.
Undo or reset a speed change
Use Undo immediately, or select the affected segment and return Normal speed to 1×. For a curve, remove or reset its curve adjustment. If only part of the source was changed, reset that segment rather than the entire project.
