To change Netflix menus and buttons, edit the profile’s Display Language. To change spoken dialogue or subtitles, use Audio & Subtitles in the profile settings or while a movie or show is playing. These are separate, profile-based settings, so changing one profile does not automatically change every profile on the account.
| What you want to change | Setting or control |
|---|---|
| Menus, buttons, descriptions and interface text | Profile settings → Display Language |
| Spoken dialogue | Profile settings → Audio & Subtitles, or playback controls |
| Subtitle or caption language | Profile settings → Audio & Subtitles, or playback controls |
| Subtitle font, size, color or background | Subtitle appearance |
Change the Netflix display language on Android, iPhone or iPad
Netflix’s current mobile instructions use the same path on Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads. The change applies to the profile you select.
- Open the Netflix app.
- Tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to edit.
- Tap Display Language.
- Choose the language.
Netflix says the app saves this setting automatically. If menus remain in the old language, sign out and sign back in, then check that you edited the intended profile. See Netflix’s instructions at How to change the language on Netflix.
Set preferred audio and subtitle languages on mobile
- Open My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name, then Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile.
- Tap Audio & Subtitles.
- Select your preferred audio and subtitle languages.
These preferences influence Netflix’s selections and discovery, but they cannot add a track that is not supplied for a title in your country or on your device.

Change the display language on a smart TV or streaming device
On a television, set the interface language from the profile-selection screen rather than from a movie’s playback controls.
- Open Netflix and go to the profile-selection screen.
- Highlight the profile to change.
- Select the Edit pencil icon.
- Select Language.
- Choose the language.
- Select Done.
The setting belongs to the selected profile. Other household profiles can keep different display languages.
Change audio or subtitles on a TV
- Start the movie or show.
- Pause playback to open the player controls.
- Select Audio & Subtitles. Some TV interfaces label this Other, or show the language list along the bottom.
- Choose an audio track, subtitle language, or both.
The available choices are specific to that title and may differ between episodes.

Change audio or subtitles while watching
Changing the display language does not change a film’s spoken language. For playback languages, open the title’s controls instead:
- Start the movie or episode.
- Tap or click the screen, or pause on a TV, streaming player or game console.
- Select Audio & Subtitles (or Other on some TV interfaces).
- Choose the audio track and/or subtitle language.
- Resume playback.
Netflix documents these controls in How to use subtitles, captions, or choose audio language. A title may offer no choice, only one choice, or different choices from another title.
Why a language is missing
A preferred language is not guaranteed for every title. Netflix identifies location, profile settings, title licensing, the individual season or episode, downloads and device capability as possible causes.

Use this troubleshooting order
- Check the profile. Confirm that you changed the profile currently being used to watch.
- Set the preference. Open Audio & Subtitles in profile settings, then check the title’s playback menu.
- Try another title. Language tracks can vary by film, series, season and episode. Older seasons or episodes, especially content offered before 2018, may have fewer tracks than newer episodes. Tracks for weekly or rolling releases can also appear later.
- Check a stream rather than a download. Netflix may show only the two most relevant languages for a downloaded title. Delete the download and stream the title over Wi-Fi to check for additional options.
- Consider the device. Netflix says some older devices may not support subtitles in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian or Vietnamese. Devices made before 2014 are a general guide, not a strict cutoff. Some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer support Netflix at all; check Netflix Supported Devices.
- Refresh the session. If the interface itself has not changed, sign out and sign back in after saving the profile setting.
For a fuller explanation of regional, title and device limits, see Netflix’s Why subtitles or audio isn’t available in a specific language.
Kids profiles can behave differently
Netflix generally does not save subtitle preferences when most Kids titles are watched from an adult profile. The preferences are saved when the title is watched from a Kids profile. If preferred audio keeps resetting, Netflix recommends playing a title rated Teens or above for two to three minutes so the preference can be established.
United States catalog-filtering note
In the United States, Netflix says a profile language can affect which titles are shown when that language is one Netflix lists for audio or subtitle filtering; Netflix lists English for the United States. Choosing another profile language may reveal titles available in the region even when they do not include that language’s audio or subtitles. This changes visibility, not the underlying catalog or track availability. Details are in How to see all TV shows and movies available in your country.
Change subtitle appearance, not subtitle language
If the problem is readability rather than translation, use Subtitle appearance. Netflix supports adjustments such as font, size, style, shadow and background color, although available controls vary by country, language and device. These settings change how captions look; they do not translate them or change the spoken audio. See How to change the appearance of subtitles and closed captions.

Restore or manage different language choices
To restore the original interface, repeat the relevant device path and select the previous display language. To use different languages in one household, edit each profile separately. Keep display language, playback preferences and subtitle appearance independent: changing one does not automatically change the others.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change Netflix’s language without changing my phone’s language?
Yes. Netflix’s documented mobile path changes the selected Netflix profile through My Netflix → profile name → Manage Profiles → Display Language; it does not require changing the phone’s system language.
Does changing Display Language change movie audio?
No. Display Language changes menus and interface text. Choose audio in Audio & Subtitles in profile settings or in the playback controls.
Can different Netflix profiles use different languages?
Yes. Language settings are associated with the profile you edit, so each profile can have its own display, audio and subtitle preferences.

How do I change subtitles without changing audio?
Open the playback controls, select Audio & Subtitles, choose a subtitle language and leave the selected audio track unchanged.
Why does Netflix keep switching back to English?
Verify the active profile, save or apply its language setting, and sign out and back in. Kids-title behavior, device support and the title’s available tracks can also affect playback preferences.
Why do downloaded shows show fewer languages?
Netflix may limit downloads to the two most relevant languages. Delete the download and stream the title again to check for more options.
Does Netflix offer every language in every country?
No. Audio and subtitle availability depends on the country or location, title licensing, profile settings, the individual title or episode and device support.
