To change the resolution or bitrate that SRS sends to YouTube, enable an SRS FFmpeg transcoding path and set its output parameters: vwidth and vheight for dimensions, vfps for frame rate, and vbitrate for bitrate. If SRS is only forwarding or copying the incoming stream, those settings will not change its encoded video; adjust the upstream encoder or add transcoding.
First determine whether SRS is transcoding or passing through
Resolution and bitrate belong to the encoded video. A pass-through configuration relays the existing encoded stream, so its dimensions and bitrate remain what the upstream encoder produced. To change them inside SRS, the stream must go through an FFmpeg transcoding process. Transcoding creates a new encoded output and gives you control over its output size, frame rate and bitrate.
SRS documents FFmpeg transcoding for live streams and forwarding the result to another RTMP server. Its parameter mapping documentation describes the relevant output controls. Those references establish the workflow, but they do not provide a complete, current, credential-safe YouTube deployment recipe for every SRS release. Confirm configuration syntax against the version you have deployed rather than pasting an old example unchanged.
Choose the output settings before configuring YouTube
Pick an output resolution and frame rate that your source, encoding capacity and upload connection can sustain. Then set an appropriate bitrate for that combination. The following YouTube figures are recommendations shown on YouTube Help’s live-encoder page accessed in 2026; they are not experimental measurements or universal targets.

| Codec and output | YouTube guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | Use this as YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for this resolution and frame rate. |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | Higher frame rate has a separate recommendation; do not substitute the 30 fps figure. |
| H.264, 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | This is specific to 720p60 H.264. |
| H.264, 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | This range applies to the stated H.264 resolutions at 30 fps. |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps minimum–maximum guidance | This is a range for those codecs, not the H.264 recommended value. |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps | 4–10 Mbps minimum–maximum guidance | Keep codec-specific ranges separate from H.264 recommendations. |
These figures describe the stream sent to YouTube, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive that exact rendition. YouTube transcodes live ingest into multiple playback formats. Available upload bandwidth and connection stability matter as much as the nominal target: leave room for network variation and test with representative motion and audio before relying on a setting for a live event.
Set output dimensions, frame rate and bitrate in SRS
- Verify the active workflow. Identify the SRS configuration and confirm that the stream is actually routed through FFmpeg transcoding. If it is copied or forwarded unchanged, changing transcoding parameters will have no effect until that path is enabled.
- Set the output dimensions. Use
vwidthandvheightfor the intended encoded width and height, such as the dimensions corresponding to 720p or 1080p. Keep the pair consistent with the aspect ratio you intend to send. - Set the output frame rate. Use
vfpsfor the transcoded output frame rate. Select the frame rate you intend to deliver to YouTube, not merely the source rate. - Set the output bitrate. Use
vbitratefor the output bitrate. SRS documents this parameter in kbps, while the corresponding FFmpeg bitrate value is in bps. For example, 10 Mbps is 10,000 kbps in the SRS unit convention; avoid entering a bps figure where the SRS setting expects kbps. - Check the syntax for your release and start a test stream. The parameter mapping cited here is from the SRS v3 wiki, while the deployment example is SRS v4 documentation. Do not assume that an example’s surrounding configuration or defaults match your installed release. Validate against that release’s documentation and logs.
- Confirm the actual outgoing stream. Check SRS/FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream health indicators to verify that the output dimensions, frame rate and bitrate match the intended settings and remain stable.
The SRS documentation maps vwidth/vheight, vfps and vbitrate to FFmpeg output controls: SRS v3 FFmpeg parameter mapping. For the documented live-transcoding workflow, see SRS Transcode Deploy.

Match YouTube Live settings to the stream SRS sends
- Prepare the YouTube broadcast and ingest credentials. Use YouTube Live Control Room to create or configure the broadcast and obtain the stream credentials. Treat the stream key as a password: keep it out of public configuration examples, logs and screenshots.
- Choose automatic or manual resolution handling. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate by default. If you need to choose these manually in Live Control Room, YouTube’s guidance calls for a custom stream key and manual settings.
- Make the encoder output agree with the selected ingest settings. The SRS/FFmpeg output—not just the source file or upstream input—must match the resolution, frame rate and codec/bitrate plan you chose.
- Test before the event and monitor while live. Send a representative test with the same motion and audio characteristics as the real stream. During the broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream health and address warnings rather than assuming a configured bitrate is being delivered reliably.
YouTube’s current guidance on encoder settings, bitrate and resolution is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Troubleshoot common resolution and bitrate problems
- The YouTube stream stays at the source resolution. SRS may be passing the stream through rather than transcoding it. Confirm the FFmpeg transcoding path is active; otherwise change the upstream encoder or enable transcoding.
- The configured bitrate seems far too high or low. Check units. SRS documents
vbitratein kbps, while FFmpeg uses bps. Convert deliberately before entering a value. - YouTube reports a different resolution or frame rate than expected. Check the actual transcoded output and compare it with Live Control Room’s selection. YouTube detects those properties automatically unless manual settings are selected with a custom stream key.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health. The chosen output may exceed what the connection can sustain consistently. Test at a lower bitrate or resolution, use a reliable connection, and monitor stream health during a representative test.
- The output settings are rejected or have no effect. Verify the configuration syntax and supported options for the deployed SRS version. The cited mapping is version-specific, and the v4 example does not establish universal syntax or defaults for other releases.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel built from uploaded videos rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing an always-on SRS/FFmpeg setup. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
