To celebrate the familiar Seinfeld version of Festivus, gather on December 23 for a meal, an airing of grievances and feats of strength—with an unadorned aluminum pole if you have one. The pole and wrestling are optional: a safe substitute and a no-contact game can keep the spirit playful without turning the party into a hazard.
What Festivus celebrates—and where the customs came from
Festivus has two related histories. It began as a real family tradition associated with Daniel O’Keefe. His son, writer Dan O’Keefe, drew on that experience for the Seinfeld episode “The Strike,” which aired December 18, 1997, according to the Library of Congress. The sitcom’s recognizable version is an adaptation, not a record of every custom the O’Keefe family practiced.
The television observance is associated with December 23, an unadorned aluminum pole, a dinner, an airing of grievances and feats of strength. The pole was a show addition. In the episode, Frank Costanza explains its appeal with the line, “I find tinsel distracting.” That is fictional dialogue, not a rule about decorating a real celebration.
How to celebrate Festivus in 12 steps
-
Choose the date
Pick December 23 to follow the date associated with the sitcom’s Festivus. The episode itself aired on December 18, 1997; that is its broadcast date, not the holiday date.

Invite people who will enjoy the joke
Invite friends or family and describe the gathering as playful. Let guests know that sharing a grievance or joining a physical challenge is optional.
-
Choose a comfortable space
Plan for both a seated meal and any activities. Leave enough room to move around safely if you set up a pole or play a game.
-
Set up a pole—or improvise
An unadorned aluminum pole is the television version’s signature decoration, but it is not required to host. A safe household substitute can work for a casual gathering, or you can skip the pole entirely.
-
Make the pole stable
If you use one, secure it so it cannot tip easily. Keep it clear of walkways, children’s play areas and objects it could strike if it falls. This is practical hosting advice, not a historical Festivus rule.

Plan the meal
The episode includes a Festivus dinner. Serve a shared meal that suits your guests; no particular menu is required to follow the televised customs.
-
Explain the airing of grievances
Before dinner or the activity begins, explain that the point is a comic airing of frustrations. Make clear that anyone may pass.
-
Invite lighthearted grievances
In the episode, participants tell others how they have disappointed them over the year. For a friendly gathering, invite guests to share a brief, humorous grievance if they want to.
-
Keep the humor kind
Steer away from sensitive personal subjects or singling someone out in a way that could embarrass or upset them. The goal is a shared joke, not a confrontation.

The episode places feats of strength after the airing of grievances. Introduce a challenge only if guests are comfortable taking part.
-
Choose a safe challenge
Rather than wrestling, try a no-contact contest such as a balance challenge, a short puzzle race or a game of strength trivia. These are practical alternatives for a home gathering, not canonical Festivus customs.
-
Close however you like
Finish with a toast, a group photo or another activity your guests enjoy. These are optional ways to end the party, not part of the show’s established sequence.
Do you need to buy Festivus decorations or a kit?
No. The pole is recognizable from the show, but a purchase is not necessary to celebrate. You can use a safe substitute or leave it out, and the gathering can still include the meal, grievances and a consensual, safe challenge.
