Avni Doshi’s novel appeared on the 2020 Booker Prize longlist as Burnt Sugar, the title used for its UK edition. The same novel was first published in India as Girl in White Cotton. The Booker announced its 13-book longlist on 28 July 2020.
Why the book has two titles
Girl in White Cotton and Burnt Sugar are titles for the same novel, not two separate books. Doshi’s author page identifies Girl in White Cotton as the Indian publication title and presents the work as Burnt Sugar: Avni Doshi’s official Burnt Sugar page. The Booker longlist names Burnt Sugar, published by Hamish Hamilton, the UK edition listed for the prize. [The Booker Prizes’ 2020 longlist]
So readers looking for the Booker-listed edition should search for Burnt Sugar; readers seeking the Indian publication title should look for Girl in White Cotton. Edition-specific publication dates and ISBNs are not established by these sources.
| Title | Publication context | Publisher named in the cited source |
|---|---|---|
| Girl in White Cotton | India; original publication title | Not stated on the cited Booker longlist or author page |
| Burnt Sugar | UK edition; title used on the Booker longlist | Hamish Hamilton, in the Booker longlist |
What the 2020 longlist announcement said
The Booker Prizes announced the 2020 longlist on 28 July 2020, calling it “The Booker Dozen.” It contained 13 novels selected from 162 eligible books. Doshi’s entry was listed as “Avni Doshi (USA), Burnt Sugar (Hamish Hamilton, Penguin Random House).” [The Booker Prizes’ announcement]
#1 Best Overall
The announcement said the prize was open to writers of any nationality writing in English, provided their books were published in the UK or Ireland during the eligibility window of 1 October 2019 to 30 September 2020. That rule explains why an Indian publication title could be associated with a UK edition on the Booker list; the prize entry concerns the eligible publication, not a requirement that the author have a particular nationality.
“Indian-origin” and the Booker’s “USA” label
Contemporaneous Indian reporting described Doshi as an “Indian-origin” writer. The Booker’s author table, separately, gives her country or territory as “USA.” These are different descriptions and should not be treated as interchangeable statements about citizenship or birthplace: the Indian Express used the former phrasing in its coverage of the shortlist, while the Booker supplied the latter label in its longlist. From longlist to shortlist
Doshi advanced from the longlist to the six-book shortlist, announced on 15 September 2020. In that announcement, the Booker said she wrote eight drafts of her debut novel before it was first published in India as Girl in White Cotton, then appeared in the Booker competition under the title Burnt Sugar. The novel centers on the fraught relationship between mother Tara and daughter Antara; the Booker described that relationship in the context of dementia. Doshi’s own page describes the story as one of obsession and betrayal. [Doshi’s book page]
