Keep ceramic art safe by handling it as little as possible, giving it a stable place with room around it, and protecting it from knocks, direct heat and unnecessary cleaning. An enclosed case or cupboard can reduce dust and accidental contact; an open shelf can work well when it is level, secure and out of the way. The right care depends on the object: intact, stable ceramics are different from porous, cracked, repaired or flaking pieces.
Start with the object, not a cleaning routine
Ceramic art includes objects made and finished in many ways. Some pieces are glazed and robust in ordinary household conditions; others have unglazed or porous surfaces, delicate decoration, old repairs, or materials beyond ceramic. Their appearance alone may not reveal how they will respond to water, handling or changes in their surroundings.
Before deciding where to display a piece or whether to clean it, look for visible signs of vulnerability. Check the base, handles, spouts, joins, decorative areas and any repair. Look for cracks, loose parts, flaking or powdering surfaces, salt deposits, and evidence that the object has been restored. These are reasons to avoid routine cleaning and unnecessary movement. If the finish or condition is uncertain, leave the object undisturbed and seek advice from a qualified objects conservator.
The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) advises that stable ceramics generally have minimal sensitivity to relative humidity and light. That is not a guarantee for every object: salt-contaminated ceramics, unstable surfaces, repairs and mixed-material artworks need more caution. For most households, careful placement and sensible handling matter more than attempting to create museum-style climate controls.

How to handle ceramic art safely
Ceramics can be hard yet brittle. A piece may survive years on a shelf but break if it is knocked, lifted by a projecting part, or put down unevenly. Plan each move before lifting, and do not move an object just to dust beneath it unless there is a good reason.
Use a deliberate two-handed lift
- Check the object first. Inspect the base, body, handles, joins, decoration and any old repair. A repaired piece may be weaker than an intact one, even if the repair looks sound.
- Remove loose components. If a lid or another part is detachable and comes away easily, remove it before lifting the main object. Do not force a part that seems stuck.
- Choose the destination. Clear the route and make sure the landing place is level, stable and large enough. This avoids holding the object while deciding where it should go.
- Support the base and body. With clean, dry hands, place one hand beneath the base and use the other to support the body or side. Keep the object close to your body as you move it.
- Set it down gently. Lower it onto the prepared surface without letting it tip or rest on a handle, spout or other projection. Check that it sits securely before letting go.
Do not lift by a handle, rim, spout, lid or decorative feature. These parts can be vulnerable even when they look sturdy. Avoid carrying several pieces together; for a group of small objects, use a padded tray so they are supported and kept from knocking against one another.
Use the same care when taking an object off a shelf as when putting it back. Make room to reach it directly rather than pulling it past neighboring pieces. If you need to move a group, prepare the padded tray first and transfer pieces individually; carrying multiple objects in your hands makes it harder to support each one securely.
Should you wear gloves?
Guidance differs. The Western Australian Museum permits either clean bare hands or disposable rubber gloves for its collection-care context, while the CCI advises against gloves for ceramic and glass because bare skin provides grip and touch feedback. For a stable household object, clean, dry hands are a sensible default. Gloves are not universally required. A fragile, contaminated or unusually valuable object may need different handling; get tailored advice rather than assuming gloves are safer.

Look for a level, stable shelf, cabinet or table that will not wobble or be shaken by a nearby door. Keep the object away from edges, busy walkways and places where people or pets might bump it. Avoid shelves above locations where a fall could injure someone or damage other objects. Leave enough space to reach the ceramic without grabbing or shifting nearby pieces.
Think about the route you would use to reach the object as well as the shelf itself. A position that is visible but difficult to access can encourage risky handling, particularly if other works must be moved first. Give the piece enough room that your hands can support it while lifting and setting it down. Do not place it where a frequently opened door shakes the shelf, or where ordinary activity makes a bump likely.
Keep ceramic art away from direct sunlight, radiators, heating vents, fireplaces and other sources of direct heat. Avoid spots with sharp temperature changes or nearby sources of water. These precautions are particularly important when the work is unstable or includes materials such as paper, paint, lacquer or adhesives alongside ceramic.

Open shelf or enclosed case?
Neither option is right for every home. Choose according to the main risk: dust, accidental contact, access, or the need to see and reach the object. A case is an option, not a requirement for every stable piece.

| Open shelf | You can give the piece a secure, level position and want easy visibility and access. | Keep it away from high-traffic edges and places pets or people can knock it. Expect more dust than in a closed cupboard or case. |
| Closed cupboard or display case | You want to reduce dust and incidental handling, especially where children, pets or bumps are a concern. | Make sure the shelf is stable and the object fits without crowding. Keep light fixtures outside the case; a hot spotlight can heat the display area. |
A display case can help limit dust and incidental contact, but it still needs a stable shelf and a sensible position. Check that the object fits without touching the sides or other works, and that you can reach it without awkwardly twisting or tilting it. Visibility is useful, but access matters too: if a case makes safe handling difficult, reconsider the layout. Keep any light fixtures outside the case to avoid heat buildup.
In either arrangement, do not crowd or stack works. Each object should have stable footing and enough clearance that you can reach it without catching another piece. If a group of plates must be stacked, keep the stack low and place cut-to-size acid-free paper between them. For ordinary display, separate positions are safer than a tall or crowded arrangement.
Consider a shelf liner carefully
For an open shelf, the CCI identifies inert polyethylene foam sheet or acid-free paper as possible shelf-lining materials. Confirm the material rather than relying on a vague product description. The liner must lie flat and provide a level support; if it makes the object tilt or slide, it creates a new risk instead of solving one. Do not add padding that leaves a piece unstable.
Check the fit after placing the object: a liner should not bunch, curl or create an uneven edge beneath the base. Nor should it be assumed to anchor a piece that already wobbles. The relevant questions are whether the material is the specified type, whether it supports the object evenly, and whether the object remains steady on it. If the liner makes the piece slide or tilt, remove it and use a more stable surface.
Light, heat and household conditions
It is easy to treat light as the main threat to every ceramic object, but the risk depends on what the artwork contains and how it is lit. The National Park Service states that visible or UV light will not damage most ceramics, glass and stone. That does not mean a sunny window is a good display location: direct sunlight can bring heat, and infrared radiation can warm an object and change local relative humidity. A nearby hot lamp can create a similar concern.
Do not aim a hot spotlight directly at a ceramic piece. Keep light fixtures outside display cases and avoid lighting that warms the object or its surroundings. If the work also contains paper, paint, lacquer, adhesives or other non-ceramic components, take extra care: the whole artwork may not share the same tolerance as its ceramic parts.

Stable ceramics generally do well under ordinary conditions, so do not impose one humidity target on every household object. The Western Australian Museum gives collection-care environmental ranges of 15–25 °C and 40–60% relative humidity, with specified limits on daily variation. Those are institutional recommendations, not a universal household requirement for every ceramic. A conservator should advise on an archaeological object, salt-contaminated pottery, active flaking or a repair that is failing.
For a typical stable piece, there is no need to chase a particular humidity reading just because the object is ceramic. Avoid sharp changes, direct heat and nearby water sources; do not treat institutional collection-care ranges as a prescription for every home. If a piece has active deterioration or a condition that makes its stability uncertain, a conservator can advise on that object rather than relying on a general target.
Dusting and cleaning: when to leave it alone
Prevent dust where you can instead of repeatedly removing it from the object. A closed cupboard or display case can reduce dust and the need to handle a piece. The CCI puts the principle plainly: “Preventing the deposition of dust or dirt is far safer than having to deal later with dusting and cleaning—which may not always be safe or recommended.” Dust can settle in porous or damaged surfaces, while cleaning itself introduces contact and handling risks.
That is why a regular dusting schedule is not automatically good care. Each cleaning session means touching or moving the work, and dust may be lodged in a surface that cannot safely be brushed or wiped. Consider reducing dust around the display or using an enclosed space first. If the object is already dusty and its condition is uncertain, do not let the desire for a spotless finish outweigh the risk of disturbing it.
Do not routinely wash or soak ceramic art
Water is not automatically safe just because the object is ceramic. It can enter porous clay or cracks, stain a glaze through a crack, and affect older repairs or adhesives. The CCI notes that water entering a museum accidentally can carry residues into porous ceramics, stain glazes through cracks and damage repairs. A household wash or soak is not a safer version of that exposure.
Do not wet-clean a cracked, flaking, repaired or porous object without professional advice. Avoid washing or soaking ceramic art as a routine cleaning method. Do not assume that a glossy surface, an apparently small crack or a familiar-looking repair makes water harmless.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe same caution applies to household cleaning products: the finish and underlying materials may be uncertain, and the guidance for these objects does not establish that cleaners are safe. Do not test a product or use moisture to determine whether a surface is porous. If cleaning seems necessary on a vulnerable or unfamiliar piece, leave it alone and ask an objects conservator.

When is light dry dusting reasonable?
For an intact, stable piece, light dry dusting may be reasonable if it can be done without putting the object at risk. Support the object fully, use a method that will not snag its decoration, and stop immediately if anything moves or flakes. Do not use dusting as a reason to carry the piece around or repeatedly turn it over.
Leave an object undisturbed if its surface is fragile, powdering or flaking; if it has an old restoration, salt deposits or unknown materials; or if you cannot tell whether its surface is stable. In those cases, consult an objects conservator before dusting or cleaning. A conservator can assess the particular material and condition rather than applying a general household method to an uncertain object.
Common display problems and what to do
The piece wobbles or tilts
Do not leave it in a position where a small bump could topple it. Check whether the shelf is level and whether the liner is creating an uneven surface or allowing the object to slide. Move the piece only with secure support, and choose a stable surface that fits its base. If the object itself has an uneven or damaged base, do not try to correct that by forcing it into a tilted position; ask a conservator about a suitable support.
The display area is dusty or gets bumped
First consider whether a closed cupboard or case can reduce dust and incidental contact. If you keep an open shelf, choose a less exposed, lower-risk location and avoid placing the work at an edge. A case should not be treated as a solution if it crowds the object, makes access awkward or puts a hot light near it.
You notice a crack, flake, loose part or old repair
Stop routine handling and cleaning. Do not test the repair, try to reattach a part, or wet the surface. Leave the object in a stable place and consult a qualified objects conservator about the safest way to move, display or care for it.
You are unsure whether the surface is porous or stable
Do not use water or a cleaning product to find out. The finish may not reveal how a material will respond, and moisture can enter cracks or porous areas. Avoid cleaning until a conservator has assessed the object if the uncertainty affects its safety.

How do you clean ceramic sculptures?
First consider whether cleaning is needed; preventing dust with a cupboard or case is safer than frequent handling. Do not wash or soak ceramic art routinely. Light dry dusting may be reasonable only for an intact, stable object, with full support and a method that will not snag decoration. Stop if anything moves or flakes.
Can I wash a cracked or repaired ceramic piece?
Do not wet-clean a cracked, flaking, repaired or porous piece without professional advice. Water can enter cracks or porous clay, stain a glaze and affect old repairs or adhesives. Leave it undisturbed and ask a qualified objects conservator.
Should I wear gloves when handling pottery?
Gloves are not universally required. Guidance differs, and the Canadian Conservation Institute advises against gloves for ceramic and glass because bare hands provide grip and touch feedback. Clean, dry hands are a sensible default for a stable household object; ask for tailored advice for a fragile, contaminated or unusually valuable piece.
Is a display case necessary for ceramic art?
No. An open shelf can work if it is level, stable, away from edges and traffic, and gives the piece room. A closed cupboard or case can reduce dust and incidental contact, which may be useful around children, pets or frequent bumps. Check that the case does not crowd the object or trap heat from a light.

Do ceramics need a specific humidity level at home?
Stable ceramics generally do well under ordinary conditions, so do not apply one humidity target to every household piece. Avoid sharp environmental changes, direct heat and nearby water. Salt-contaminated, archaeological, actively flaking or otherwise unstable pieces need individualized advice from a conservator.
Can I stack ceramic plates for display or storage?
Avoid stacking works for ordinary display. If a set of plates must be stacked, keep the stack low and interleave them with cut-to-size acid-free paper. Do not crowd shelves or create an arrangement that makes pieces difficult to reach safely.
What can I put under ceramic art on an open shelf?
The Canadian Conservation Institute identifies inert polyethylene foam sheet or acid-free paper as possible liners. Confirm the material and make sure it lies flat, supports the piece evenly and does not make it tilt or slide.
The Bottom Line
For stable ceramic art, focus on a secure, level display, careful two-handed handling and preventing dust rather than frequent cleaning. Keep pieces away from direct sun, heat, edges and traffic; use a case when it meaningfully reduces dust or bumps. If a piece is cracked, porous, flaking, repaired or otherwise uncertain, avoid water and seek advice from a qualified objects conservator.
