Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Calculate storage from the total bitrate of each recording and the number of seconds you keep: bytes = bitrate in bits per second Ă— recording seconds Ă· 8. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings for 1080p30—10 Mbps video plus 128 kbps stereo audio—a continuous 30-day library works out to about 3.28 TB decimal, or 2.98 TiB. That is a transparent estimate from the settings, not a measured file size.
Calculate the library size
Use the bitrate of the local recording, not resolution alone. If video and audio bitrates are listed separately, add them to get the combined bitrate. Then multiply by the actual recorded time in seconds and divide by eight to convert bits to bytes.
- Find the recording bitrate. Use the configured or expected average bitrate for the saved file. Add separately specified audio bitrate.
- Find total recording time. Multiply daily recording hours by the number of days, then by 3,600 to convert hours to seconds. For uninterrupted recording, 30 days is 2,592,000 seconds.
- Calculate bytes. Multiply combined bits per second by total seconds and divide by eight.
- Convert and add headroom. For decimal GB/TB, divide bytes by 1,000,000,000 or 1,000,000,000,000. For binary GiB/TiB, divide by 1,073,741,824 or 1,099,511,627,776. Add a buffer you choose for recording variation and filesystem overhead.
TB is decimal; TiB is binary and represents more bytes. Check which unit convention a drive or operating system uses before comparing its displayed capacity with your estimate.
Worked estimates using YouTube’s recommended settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 10 Mbps H.264 video for 1080p30 and 128 kbps stereo audio. Combined, that is 10.128 Mbps. The following figures are calculations from those bitrates and recording durations, not file-size measurements or YouTube-published capacity statistics. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Recording setup | Calculation period | Estimated storage |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 H.264 video at 10 Mbps plus 128 kbps stereo audio | 30 continuous days | 3.28 TB decimal / 2.98 TiB |
| Same 1080p30 bitrate | 8 hours per day for 30 days | About 1.09 TB decimal, before headroom |
| 720p60 H.264 video at 6 Mbps plus 128 kbps stereo audio | 30 continuous days | About 1.99 TB decimal |
| Same 1080p30 bitrate | 1 hour | About 4.56 GB decimal |
For the 1080p30 continuous example: 10,128,000 bits per second Ă— 2,592,000 seconds Ă· 8 = 3,281,472,000,000 bytes. If your channel records fewer hours, scale the continuous estimate by actual hours divided by 24. For another encoder setting, substitute its bitrate; 1080p does not have one universal file size.
Choose a drive capacity that fits the real archive
Start with the full retention period and the highest plausible sustained recording bitrate. Compare that estimate with the drive’s usable capacity after formatting, then leave your chosen headroom rather than planning to fill every byte. Account separately for duplicate local copies: two full copies require roughly twice the library capacity.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- External hard drive: the direct category for a single local library. Compare usable capacity, price per usable terabyte, connection type, sustained transfer needs, warranty, and portability.
- Second drive: relevant if you want a separate backup copy. A second copy helps against loss of the first drive, but does not itself guarantee preservation.
- NAS: an optional category for larger, shared, or expandable archives; it is not required to calculate or store one library.
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Its live stream archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a longer stream may not be captured. That 12-hour figure is an archive caveat, not a file-size limit. Plan your own local recording and retention independently of YouTube’s archive processing.
What can change the estimate?
- Variable bitrate: the saved file’s average data rate can differ from a configured target. When uncertain, size for the highest plausible sustained bitrate.
- Actual duration: interruptions, pauses, or a schedule shorter than 24 hours reduce recorded seconds; a longer retention window increases them.
- Tracks and copies: separate audio tracks, remuxing, or saved versions at multiple qualities can add storage. Include every retained file in the calculation.
- Viewer playback formats: YouTube transcodes streams into multiple playback formats. Do not multiply your local source-file estimate by the number of viewer renditions; those are not extra local recordings unless you separately save them.
- Archive availability: the YouTube Live Streaming API notes that a completed broadcast is converted into a video and that availability can be delayed relative to broadcast length. A platform archive is not a substitute for sizing and retaining files you control.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than keeping a local 30-day archive, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
