To calculate a mini PC’s payback time, first measure its average power draw while it runs your actual YouTube streaming setup. Convert that draw into annual electricity cost, then compare the mini PC’s total cost with a specific alternative. Divide its extra upfront cost by annual net savings. If the comparison produces no positive annual savings or other defensible net benefit, there is no payback under those assumptions.
What “payback” means for a streaming mini PC
A mini PC does not pay for itself just because it uses little electricity or because a YouTube channel might earn money. Payback is a comparison: it occurs when the purchase generates enough net savings or incremental net contribution to recover its upfront cost against a named alternative.
That alternative might be a desktop you already own, another computer you would otherwise buy, a hosted streaming service, or not running the stream. The answer changes with the baseline. For example, a mini PC may cost less to operate than an always-on desktop, but it cannot be credited with savings against “no stream” unless the stream itself creates a measurable net benefit.
Measure the mini PC’s real streaming power draw
Use wall power, not the adapter label
Measure the computer at the wall while it is doing the intended job. A plug-in electricity monitor can show actual consumption; choose one suited to your outlet and electrical system. The power adapter’s wattage rating is its capacity, not the computer’s average consumption. Manufacturer maximums and idle readings also do not establish the draw during continuous streaming.

Measure the actual workload
Run the planned stream setup long enough to capture representative operation. Include the encoder workload, storage and peripherals that will remain powered. If the setup alternates between idle and active states, record a representative average over that pattern rather than using only a brief peak or idle snapshot. Document what was connected and which streaming settings were in use so that the reading is reproducible.

Calculate annual electricity use and cost
Convert average watts to annual kWh
For continuous operation through a 365-day calculation year:
Annual kWh = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 8,760
The 8,760 hours are 24 hours × 365 days. If the device will not actually run continuously, replace 8,760 with the hours you expect it to operate in a year.

Apply your electricity rate
Annual electricity cost = annual kWh × your all-in price per kWh
Use the rate that applies to your bill, including relevant charges where possible. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a residential average of 18.31 cents per kWh for July 2026. Build a like-for-like cost comparison
Include costs attributable to each option
For the mini PC, include its purchase price and the costs needed to make the intended setup work: storage or RAM upgrades, essential peripherals, a power monitor if purchased, setup costs, electricity, and any recurring services. Over a chosen ownership horizon, calculate:

Mini PC total cost = purchase and setup costs + electricity over the horizon + attributable recurring charges
Calculate the same categories for the real alternative. An existing desktop’s purchase price may be a sunk cost, but its future electricity and any incremental operating costs still matter. For a new desktop or hosted option, include its upfront and recurring charges. Do not assign a hardware-wear cost unless you have a defensible basis for estimating it.
Choose the right baseline
- Against an existing computer: compare the electricity and other incremental costs of keeping that system running with the mini PC’s complete costs.
- Against another new computer: compare both systems’ purchase, setup, measured operating cost and recurring charges over the same horizon.
- Against hosted streaming: compare the local hardware’s total cost with the hosted service’s actual charges and the responsibilities each option leaves you.
- Against not streaming: savings alone may not apply. Any claimed benefit must be incremental net contribution attributable to the stream, not gross revenue or eligibility for monetization.
Calculate the payback period
First calculate annual net savings against the baseline:
Annual net savings = alternative’s annual cost − mini PC’s annual operating cost

Then calculate:
Payback period in years = mini PC’s upfront incremental cost ÷ annual net savings
“Upfront incremental cost” means the mini PC’s upfront cost minus any upfront cost required for the alternative. If annual net savings are zero or negative, there is no payback under that comparison. If costs or savings vary over time, use the year-by-year cash flows rather than presenting a single steady annual figure as certain.
If you include streaming revenue, use incremental net contribution after applicable fees and operating costs. Label it as uncertain: views, estimated future ad revenue and monetization eligibility are not guaranteed savings or profit.

Encoder and YouTube setup
YouTube supports live streams using an encoder, which may be software on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder. The creator connects the encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and key. A mini PC is one possible computer host, not a device certified by YouTube. YouTube’s documentation also provides encoder settings guidance, recommends choosing quality suited to the internet connection, and advises testing upload bitrate and stream behavior and monitoring stream health. Account for session limits and recovery
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one live session can remain open indefinitely; plan around YouTube’s session and archiving constraints if your goal is daily continuity. Consider how the setup will be restarted after a network, power, software or platform interruption, and who will monitor it. Reliability and maintenance affect the practical value of the purchase even when they are difficult to turn into a precise dollar amount.
Compare local hardware with a hosted option
A hosted streaming service is another operating model to price alongside a mini PC.
