If your cloud-hosting service is taxable as an IT service at the 18% rate cited by India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), calculate GST on a pre-tax charge by multiplying it by 0.18. For example, a ₹10,000 taxable value gives ₹1,800 GST and a ₹11,800 total. If the quoted total already includes 18% GST, the embedded tax is total × 18/118. These are conditional calculations, not a ruling that every cloud bill has the same classification or tax treatment.
Calculate the GST amount
CBIC’s Sectoral FAQ states that the GST rate on IT services is 18%. First confirm that the service and invoice line you are calculating are correctly classified at that rate; the percentage is not a universal classification ruling for every cloud-hosting bill. CBIC’s FAQ page does not state a publication year, so check the rate notification applicable to the invoice date.
| Quoted amount | Calculation, if 18% applies | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Tax-exclusive taxable value of ₹10,000 | GST = ₹10,000 × 0.18; total = ₹10,000 × 1.18 | ₹1,800 GST; ₹11,800 total |
| Tax-inclusive total of ₹11,800 | Embedded GST = ₹11,800 × 18/118; pre-tax value = ₹11,800 × 100/118 | ₹1,800 GST; ₹10,000 pre-tax value |
The examples are arithmetic illustrations. They do not establish the classification of a particular service, the tax head on an invoice, or eligibility to claim input tax credit.
Check the invoice before applying the formula
- Identify the line item and taxable value. Separate hosting from bandwidth, storage, support, software, taxes, credits, and discounts if the supplier itemizes them. The cited CBIC sources do not decide how every bundled service should be classified, so do not assume all lines have identical treatment.
- Determine whether the quote includes GST. Use taxable value × 0.18 only for a tax-exclusive amount when 18% is confirmed. For a tax-inclusive total, use total × 18/118 to extract the tax, provided that the total actually includes tax at 18%.
- Record supplier and recipient details. Note the supplier’s country and GST registration details, your business or recipient location and GST registration status, and the place of supply stated on the invoice.
- Review the place-of-supply basis. CBIC directs readers to sections 12 and 13 of the IGST Act for IT/ITES services. The applicable tax head—CGST plus SGST/UTGST or IGST—depends on the supply and place-of-supply facts.
- Assess foreign-provider treatment separately. If the supplier is outside India and the recipient is in India with place of supply in India, import-of-services and reverse-charge rules may need to be considered under current law. Do not infer the treatment from the payment currency alone; verify the parties, invoice, and applicable rules.
- Retain the invoice and supporting records. Check supplier identity, taxable value, rate, tax amount, place of supply, and any applicable export endorsement or reverse-charge treatment.
Domestic, foreign, and export cases are not interchangeable
Indian supplier serving an Indian recipient
Check the transaction’s place of supply and the supplier and recipient locations to determine whether the invoice should show CGST with SGST/UTGST or IGST. The calculation of 18% alone cannot determine that split.

Foreign cloud provider serving an Indian recipient
CBIC describes an import of services where the supplier is outside India, the recipient is in India, and the place of supply is in India. This can raise reverse-charge questions. Confirm the actual transaction and current rules instead of treating the vendor’s displayed price or payment currency as decisive.
Indian supplier claiming export treatment
Export status depends on all applicable conditions, including supplier and recipient locations, place of supply, receipt of payment in convertible foreign exchange, and whether the parties are merely establishments of the same person. CBIC describes options that include paying IGST and claiming a refund, or supplying under bond or letter of undertaking (LUT) and seeking eligible input-tax refunds. Do not apply export treatment based on the customer being outside India alone.

What the 2024 data-hosting circular does—and does not—decide
CBIC Circular 232/26/2024-GST, dated 10 September 2024, addresses a specific arrangement: a data-hosting supplier located in India providing services on its own account to a cloud-computing service provider located outside India. It explains that the described supplier is not an intermediary in that relationship and considers other place-of-supply issues in that factual setting.
That clarification does not automatically determine the GST on an ordinary cloud-hosting subscription bought by a YouTube creator from an Indian or overseas vendor. The provider, recipient, contract, and service must match the circular’s circumstances before its conclusion is applied.

Input tax credit depends on your circumstances
Whether you can claim input tax credit for hosting used for YouTube depends on matters such as GST registration, business use, the supplier’s invoice, and compliance with current credit rules. CBIC’s invoice and credit guidance specifies supporting documents and conditions; the fact that an invoice shows GST does not by itself establish that a particular creator can claim the credit. Keep the tax invoice and obtain advice based on your registration and use of the service.
Keep a simple calculation record
- Save the supplier invoice and note the service description and taxable value.
- Record whether the amount is tax-exclusive or tax-inclusive, and the rate shown or otherwise confirmed.
- Keep the supplier and recipient locations, GST details, and place-of-supply information with the calculation.
- Document why domestic, import, export, or reverse-charge treatment applies, if relevant.
- Check invoice particulars and current rules before including any amount in an input-tax-credit claim.
Or let it run in the cloud
GST treatment depends on the vendor and invoice; it is separate from how you keep a YouTube stream running. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The first day is free with no card; after that, Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
