What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Best choice: a low-power mini PC with a hardware video encoder that supports your intended resolution, frame rate, operating system, and OBS workflow. The available evidence does not establish a tested winning model or reliable whole-system power figures for continuous streaming, so choose by verified specifications and measured performance under your actual workload—not by processor power ratings alone.
Choose for the stream you will actually run
A simple relay, a single camera, and a multi-scene OBS production place different demands on a computer. Before comparing mini PCs, define the video sources, target resolution and frame rate, overlays and filters, and other applications that will run at the same time. Also determine whether the PC must encode video or only relay an already-encoded feed.
- Software-only sources: A capture device is not automatically necessary. YouTube describes encoder-based streaming for uses including screen sharing and gameplay.
- External video or audio: If you need to bring in a camera or other external source, check what capture hardware and connections that source requires. YouTube lists external audio/video equipment among encoder-streaming use cases, but that does not mean every setup needs a capture device.
- Several cameras or microphones: Account for the production workload in OBS and any additional source-management software, rather than assuming a mini PC suitable for a simple stream will handle a complex scene equally well.
YouTube’s overview of encoder-based streams is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
What to look for in a mini PC
Compatible hardware encoding
A hardware encoder uses a specialized graphics component to handle encoding rather than placing the full encoding workload on the CPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance. Its documentation describes Intel Quick Sync support on Windows and Linux when compatible Intel graphics are present. Verify support for the exact processor graphics, operating system, drivers, OBS version, and codec you plan to use; the presence of an Intel CPU by itself is not proof that a particular configuration will work as intended.

Check the OBS hardware encoding guide before buying. Encoder compatibility is a selection criterion, not a guarantee of sustained performance on a specific mini PC.
Cooling, noise, and sustained operation
A 24/7 stream is a continuous workload, so evaluate thermal behavior and stability over an extended run. If the computer will sit near a microphone, fan noise may matter as much as raw performance. Do not treat a processor’s rated power as the mini PC’s whole-system draw: the available sources do not provide comparable wall-power measurements for candidate systems running a streaming workload.
Memory, storage, and networking
Match memory and storage to OBS, source applications, and any local recording you plan to do. Check that the exact configuration has the network connection you need, and test upload stability against the stream’s bitrate. A nominally capable encoder cannot compensate for an unreliable internet connection.

How to compare candidates
- Confirm the hardware encoder supports your codec, target resolution and frame rate, OS, and streaming software.
- Look for measured whole-system power during a comparable real workload, not only an idle figure or CPU rating.
- Check sustained temperatures, stability, and fan noise during an extended stream.
- Confirm the memory, storage, and network configuration of the exact SKU.
- Check current regional price, warranty, and support for that exact configuration; prices and availability vary and are not established here.
Can a specific mini PC be called the best?
No exact model can be responsibly named as a tested winner on the evidence available. ASUS’s NUC 14 Essential guide provides category context for mini PCs using energy-efficient Intel N-series processors, but it does not establish continuous-streaming capability, measured wall power, or a best-buy configuration. See the ASUS NUC 14 Essential guide and verify the precise SKU before purchase.
In practice, shortlist low-power mini PCs with compatible hardware encoding, then compare them under the settings and sources you will use. A forum request for a fanless Windows mini PC under a particular budget is anecdotal, not proof that fanless hardware or that price point suits your stream.
Set OBS and YouTube’s stream settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Codec availability and the appropriate settings depend on your encoder and stream.

| H.264 stream target | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a given connection can sustain the stream or that a particular mini PC will encode it well. Choose a target that matches your content and reliable upload capacity, then test it. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current, codec- and resolution-specific guidance.
Test before relying on a 24/7 run
- Configure the real production: Use the intended OBS scenes, sources, overlays, filters, audio, resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Run an extended representative test: Include typical motion and audio, and let the system operate long enough to expose heat or stability problems that a brief preview could miss.
- Monitor YouTube stream health: Check for connection or ingest problems while the test is running, rather than assuming that a successful start means the stream is healthy.
- Review the PC as well as the stream: Watch for encoding overload, dropped frames, unstable temperatures, or disruptive fan noise, and adjust the workload or settings before depending on continuous operation.
YouTube specifically advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. A successful test is useful evidence about your setup, not a guarantee of future uninterrupted service.

The stream drops frames or reports poor health
Check upload stability against the selected bitrate, then reduce the target bitrate or stream settings if the connection cannot sustain them. Confirm the ingest protocol and encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance, and watch stream health during another representative test.
The PC becomes noisy or unstable over time
Revisit sustained cooling and workload rather than relying on a short trial. Check temperatures and fan behavior with the actual scenes and applications active; if noise is captured by a nearby microphone, change placement or choose a quieter system that remains stable under load.
A camera or external source is missing
Identify the source’s connection and capture requirements, then verify that any needed capture hardware is compatible with the source and computer. A capture device is conditional on the production—not a universal requirement for streaming with OBS.
Or let it run in the cloud
