To estimate the data a 24/7 ambient-sounds livestream uploads to YouTube, multiply its sustained total bitrate by 10.8 to get decimal gigabytes per day, or by 324 to estimate a 30-day total. At 6 Mbps, for example, that is about 64.8 GB per day and 1,944 GB (1.944 TB) over 30 days. These are calculated estimates, not measured totals.
What “bandwidth” means for a continuous stream
For this calculation, bandwidth usually means the stream’s sustained upload rate: the bitrate your encoder sends from your computer or streaming service to YouTube, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Data use is the accumulated transfer over time, measured here in decimal gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB). A rate and a volume are different: an ISP’s upload capacity is not the same thing as a monthly data allowance.
The estimate below is for creator-to-YouTube ingest traffic. It is not the total data delivered to viewers. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers using different devices and networks can watch; the creator’s upload bitrate does not reveal each viewer’s playback rate or total audience traffic. YouTube’s live encoder settings and recommendations explain the ingest settings and transcoding.
Use the bitrate-to-data formula
For a sustained total bitrate R in Mbps:
- Per day: R Ă— 10.8 decimal GB
- Per 30 days: R Ă— 324 decimal GB
The calculation converts bits to bytes and divides by 1,000,000,000 to express the result in decimal gigabytes: bitrate Ă— seconds Ă· 8. One Mbps sustained for a day is 1,000,000 bits per second Ă— 86,400 seconds Ă· 8, then converted to decimal GB, or 10.8 GB. A 30-day period contains 2,592,000 seconds, producing the 324 GB multiplier.

Calculated examples
The following figures are arithmetic estimates from the formula, not published measurements. They use a 30-day month and decimal units (1 TB = 1,000 GB).
| Sustained total bitrate | Approx. data per day | Approx. data per 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 10.8 GB | 324 GB |
| 4 Mbps | 43.2 GB | 1,296 GB (1.296 TB) |
| 6 Mbps | 64.8 GB | 1,944 GB (1.944 TB) |
| 10 Mbps | 108 GB | 3,240 GB (3.24 TB) |
At 6 Mbps, the estimate is about 64.8 decimal GB per day, or 1.944 decimal TB in 30 days. YouTube lists 6 Mbps as a recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 60 fps; that is an example setting from its encoder table, not an ambient-audio or 24/7-specific recommendation. Check YouTube’s current bitrate recommendations for the codec, resolution and frame rate you use.
Find the right bitrate for your calculation
Use the actual total stream bitrate
Look in your encoder’s output or streaming settings for the configured video bitrate and audio bitrate. If it displays a total stream bitrate, use that figure. Otherwise, add the audio bitrate to the video bitrate once; do not add audio twice. Your estimate scales directly with the rate: doubling the sustained bitrate doubles the data transferred in the same time.

Account for variable bitrate and operating time
The formula assumes a sustained average rate. If your stream uses variable bitrate, use a representative measured average for the period or a conservative high estimate. A stream that runs for less than 24 hours uses proportionally less data; use its actual streaming duration rather than a full-day multiplier.

Do not infer usage from resolution alone
YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. The Help page covers RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265 and AV1 options, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding with a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). A mostly static ambient scene may not need the same settings as fast-moving footage, but there is no ambient-specific 24/7 bitrate in the cited guidance. Choose settings that produce acceptable quality for your channel, then calculate from the bitrate actually configured.
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more compression than H.264 at the same video quality. That is a qualified statement in its HLS guidance, not a guaranteed reduction in an individual channel’s observed upload or a promise for every scene and encoding. Read YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance before applying it to a particular setup.

Check your upload connection and actual transfer
The estimated data volume does not guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the stream. Your available upload capacity must be sufficient for the configured bitrate, with enough practical margin for conditions at your location; YouTube does not specify a universal 24/7 safety-margin percentage in the cited guidance.
- Set up the encoder for the stream you intend to run. Use the planned codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and audio settings.
- Test a representative segment before going live. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. For an ambient channel, test the actual loop or visuals you will broadcast, including its audio and any movement.
- Monitor stream health during operation. A bitrate calculation estimates transfer; monitoring helps reveal ingest or connection problems that arithmetic cannot predict.
- Compare like-for-like totals. Use your network meter or ISP account’s measured transfer for the same time period, and remember that a calendar month may be 28, 29, 30 or 31 days rather than the 30-day estimate in the table.
Actual network-metered use can differ because of protocol overhead, reconnects, restarts or additional transmissions. The official material cited here does not establish a universal overhead percentage, so do not add a blanket factor to the estimate.

Count a backup ingest only if your setup sends one
The YouTube Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingestion addresses. Their existence does not mean every creator sends both streams concurrently. Include extra upload data only if your particular encoder or service is configured to transmit a separate backup feed; otherwise, calculate from the stream you actually send. The Live Streaming API documentation also describes stream status and health fields.

Keep upload estimates separate from viewer delivery
Your bitrate formula estimates the data sent into YouTube, not the combined traffic consumed by your audience. YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into output formats for playback, so viewers’ delivery rates can differ from the creator’s ingest rate. Google Cloud’s separate live-streaming documentation likewise treats input bitrates and output rendition ladders as separate quantities; that documentation describes Google Cloud’s service, not a YouTube creator settings table. Google Cloud’s encoding guidance is useful background on the distinction.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep an encoder and home connection running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; after that, the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
