“iTunes in the Cloud” is Apple’s older name for account-based access to music bought from the iTunes Store. You do not install a separate cloud app: sign in to the same Apple Account on another iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows PC, then open that platform’s Purchased view to download the music again. An internet connection is required for the initial redownload; once the files are stored locally, they can be played offline.
Apple generally permits redownloading eligible purchases, but warns that a title can disappear if distribution rights change. Download important purchases and keep a second backup rather than treating cloud access as your only archive. Apple’s overview of purchased media explains these limits.

What “iTunes in the Cloud” means today
The phrase describes delivery of iTunes Store purchases through your Apple Account. It is not a current standalone product or subscription. Apple’s newer apps divide the job between the iTunes Store, Apple Music, and—on some Windows systems—legacy iTunes.
iTunes Store purchases
Songs and albums bought outright are associated with the Apple Account used for the transaction. No Apple Music subscription is needed to redownload an ordinary iTunes Store purchase. Availability still depends on the item remaining offered in your country or region.

Apple Music downloads
Apple Music provides streaming and offline downloads from a subscription catalog. A downloaded catalog track is subscription access, not the same thing as an individually purchased file. Access to that catalog ends when the membership ends.
iTunes Match
iTunes Match is intended for music you acquired elsewhere, such as CD imports, that you want matched or uploaded to Apple’s cloud music library. It is not required for normal iTunes Store purchases. Check Apple’s current availability and terms before subscribing; a current U.S. price is not established here. Apple’s service terms distinguish purchased content, Apple Music, and iTunes Match: Apple Media Services Terms.
What you need before buying or redownloading
- An Apple Account (older software may still say “Apple ID”).
- The same account signed in under Media & Purchases on every device.
- An internet connection for purchase or redownload, plus enough storage for offline copies.
- The iTunes Store app on iPhone or iPad.
- Apple Music on current Mac installations and current Windows installations, or iTunes for Windows where that legacy app is still in use.
- An authorized Mac or Windows PC if Apple requests computer authorization.
- A supported country or region. Store catalogs and redownload rights vary geographically.
Purchases follow the account, not the physical phone or computer. A replacement device can retrieve them when it uses the purchasing account and meets Apple’s authorization requirements. Apple notes that availability is not guaranteed if content leaves its services.
How to buy music from the iTunes Store
- Open the iTunes Store app on iPhone or iPad. On a computer, open the Store controls in the Apple Music or iTunes environment available on your installation.
- Search for an artist, album, or song.
- Open the item and confirm that it has a purchase control rather than only an Apple Music subscription option.
- Select the displayed purchase control and authenticate with your Apple Account, password, Face ID, Touch ID, or the computer authorization method requested.
- Let the item download, or retrieve it later from Purchased.
Prices, whether a track is sold individually, and catalog availability vary by title and country; Apple’s iTunes Store listing describes the app but does not establish a universal price.

Redownload purchases on iPhone or iPad
iPhone
- Open iTunes Store.
- Tap More, then Purchased, then Music.
- Choose Not on This iPhone.
- Select an artist and tap the download button beside a song.
iPad
- Open iTunes Store.
- Tap Purchased, then Music.
- Choose Not on This iPad.
- Select an artist and tap Download.
With Family Sharing, select the relevant family member to view eligible shared purchases. This provides access to qualifying items; it does not transfer ownership. Apple’s current device instructions are at iPhone and iPad redownload support.
Redownload on a Mac
- Open the Apple Music app.
- In the menu bar, choose Account, then Purchased.
- If Family Sharing is enabled, choose the family member whose purchases you are viewing.
- Select Albums or Songs.
- Click the download button beside an item, or choose Download All.
The Mac may need authorization with the Apple Account associated with the purchase. Follow Apple’s Mac redownload instructions if the account or authorization prompt appears.
Redownload on Windows
Apple Music for Windows
- Open Apple Music.
- At the bottom of the sidebar, click the account name.
- Select Purchased.
- Choose Albums or Songs.
- Download individual items or select Download All.
iTunes for Windows
- Open iTunes and choose Account > Purchased.
- Choose Music from the upper-left media menu.
- Select an album or song and click the download button.
Apple’s current Windows documentation covers both applications: Apple Music and iTunes for Windows. The older guide also documents Music > Store > Purchased, filters for songs, artists, and albums, and an iCloud download button: iTunes user guide.
Automatic downloads and cloud access
Automatic downloads are optional. They are separate from manually choosing an item in Purchased. On supported computer installations, Apple documents Account > Check for Available Downloads. Older iTunes versions offer Edit > Preferences > Downloads > Always check for available downloads; menu names differ between legacy iTunes and Apple Music for Windows.

Cloud access normally means signing in with the purchasing account, opening Purchased or the library, and downloading when needed. Do not assume every title streams identically in every app, country, or version. For reliable travel or offline listening, download the files first. Apple’s iCloud and iTunes guide describes this model.
Purchased music, subscriptions, and personal uploads
| Type of music | What you have | Subscription required? | If the service ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| iTunes Store purchase | A purchased digital item tied to the buying Apple Account | No for ordinary redownload | Generally remains redownloadable while Apple offers it; availability is not guaranteed |
| Apple Music catalog download | Offline access to subscription catalog content | Yes | Catalog access ends when the membership ends |
| CD-imported or external music in iCloud Music Library | Personal music synchronized or matched through Apple Music or iTunes Match | Apple Music or iTunes Match, depending on setup | Depends on the service and library state under Apple’s terms |
| Local downloaded backup | Files stored on your own device or drive | No | Remain on that storage, subject to file and device compatibility |
Canceling Apple Music does not turn your iTunes Store purchases into subscription tracks or erase the distinction between them. Apple’s legal terms explain the different rights for purchased content and iCloud Music Library services: Apple Media Services Terms.
Why a purchased song may be missing
Wrong Apple Account
If you see a price instead of a download icon, check the account under Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases on iPhone or iPad. On a computer, inspect the account menu in Apple Music or iTunes. Sign in with the account that made the purchase.
Hidden purchase
On iPhone or iPad, open Apple Music > account button or initials > Account Settings > Hidden Purchases, then unhide the item. On Mac or Windows, use Account > Account Settings > Hidden Items > Manage > Unhide.

Already downloaded
If the download button is missing or disabled, search the Apple Music app or iTunes library first. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance treats an existing local copy as a common explanation.
Region, rights, or account changes
- You changed countries or regions.
- The title is no longer sold there.
- Apple lost distribution rights and removed it from Apple Media Services.
- The item is hidden or belongs to a different account.
Signing out of Media & Purchases can remove downloaded Apple-service content from the device, so do not use sign-out casually as a troubleshooting step. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad guidance.

- Download important purchases to a Mac, Windows PC, or another supported device.
- Copy the downloaded files to a second storage location, such as an external drive.
- Make the backup before wiping a computer, changing accounts, or canceling a subscription.
- Periodically verify that the backup opens and plays.
Apple says it cannot remove content from a device after it has been permanently downloaded there, but it also warns that a purchase may become unavailable for future redownload. A local copy plus a second backup is therefore more durable than relying on cloud retrieval alone.
Platform checklist
- iPhone: iTunes Store > More > Purchased > Music > Not on This iPhone.
- iPad: iTunes Store > Purchased > Music > Not on This iPad.
- Mac: Apple Music > Account > Purchased.
- Windows Apple Music: account name > Purchased.
- Windows iTunes: Account > Purchased > Music.
- Every platform: use the purchasing Apple Account, authorize a computer when asked, and download a backup for irreplaceable albums.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Apple Music to redownload music I bought from iTunes?
No. Ordinary iTunes Store purchases can generally be redownloaded with the purchasing Apple Account. Apple Music is a separate subscription service.

Can I access purchases on a new iPhone or computer?
Yes, in most cases. Sign in with the same Apple Account, open the platform’s Purchased view, and download the items again.
Can Family Sharing let me download another person’s music?
It can expose eligible shared purchases when you select that family member, but it does not transfer ownership to you.
What should I do if an album is no longer available?
Check the account, hidden purchases, and region first. If Apple removed the title because rights changed, a local backup is the dependable way to retain access.
