To keep subtitles visible throughout a continuous YouTube stream, render them onto each prerecorded video’s picture first, then play the prepared files through a scene or playlist connected to your YouTube Live setup. This is called burning in or hardcoding subtitles. Unlike a separate subtitle track, burned text cannot be switched off by viewers.
Burned-in subtitles or a selectable track?
| Approach | What viewers see | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Burned into the picture (hard subtitles) | Text is part of the video image and stays visible. | It must be rendered and encoded into the video; viewers cannot turn it off or restyle it. |
| Separate subtitle track (soft subtitles) | Viewers may be able to enable, disable, or select a track. | Behavior depends on the container, stream path, and player support. |
FFmpeg’s formats documentation describes separate WebVTT subtitle renditions for HLS, but that does not establish compatibility with every YouTube Live workflow. If the requirement is text that is always visible, burn it into the video rather than relying on a viewer’s subtitle controls. FFmpeg Formats Documentation
YouTube Studio’s subtitle tools are for adding subtitles to videos; uploading a caption file there is not the same as rendering text into the frames of video being sent as a live stream. YouTube Help describes upload, manual-entry, and auto-sync options for video subtitles. Add subtitles & captions
Prepare the video and timed subtitle file
Start with the original prerecorded clip and a timed subtitle file, commonly SRT or ASS. The timings must match that specific clip. If the captions are not timed, create or synchronize them before rendering. YouTube’s auto-sync option is limited to supported speech-recognition languages; YouTube does not recommend it for videos longer than an hour or with poor audio. YouTube Help

- Keep an untouched copy of the original video and the subtitle source file. Burn-in changes the image, so you will need those sources to revise wording, timing, styling, or make another language version.
- Check spelling, line breaks, and timing before rendering; a subtitle file timed for a different cut will drift or appear at the wrong moments.
- Confirm the font you intend to use is available to FFmpeg, especially if the file uses styling or a font that may not be installed on the rendering system.
Render a test clip with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s official documentation describes hardcoding subtitles with a subtitle filter. A basic example for an SRT file is:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf subtitles=subtitle.srt output.mp4
Here, input.mp4 is the source video, subtitle.srt is the timed caption file, and output.mp4 is the rendered result. The command is an example, not a guarantee for every operating system, input file, or FFmpeg build. FFmpeg’s subtitle-filter implementation and options are documented in its official filters documentation. A technical tutorial published April 8, 2026 and updated September 27, 2026 documents SRT and ASS examples and says its examples were run with FFmpeg 8.1 on September 26, 2026; those version details refer to the tutorial’s examples. Style ASS subtitles when needed
The FFmpeg tutorial documents styling through ASS style fields with force_style, and using the ass filter for ASS input. It also describes a fontsdir option for supplying fonts. Use styling to improve contrast and legibility, but first verify the exact filter syntax supported by the FFmpeg build you are using. Font names and styling behavior can vary with installed fonts and build configuration.
Expect video encoding
Because the subtitle text becomes part of the picture, the video frames must be processed and encoded; the original video stream cannot simply be copied unchanged. Audio may be passed through in some workflows, but codec and stream mapping depend on the source and desired output. There is no single audio-mapping command established here for all files.

Render a short sample before processing a full library. Watch it in a normal player and confirm the output’s picture and audio work as intended.
Review the rendered file before streaming
- Timing: Check the beginning, middle, and end of the sample for early, late, or missing captions.
- Legibility: Confirm text is readable over bright, detailed, and high-contrast scenes. Keep it within the visible safe area.
- Fonts and styling: Look for substituted fonts, clipped lines, unexpected positioning, or unreadable outlines.
- Encoding and playback: Play the output file from start to finish, including its audio, before adding it to a continuous playlist.
- Source retention: Keep the clean master and subtitle file so corrections and alternate versions remain possible.
Queue prepared clips for continuous playback
OBS Media Sources can play video files in a scene and provides playlist ordering and shuffle controls. Add the prepared, subtitled files as media sources, arrange them in the intended order, and configure playback behavior for the sequence you want. OBS also documents a subtitle-track display setting, but a separate track depends on the source and playback behavior; pre-rendered subtitles avoid relying on that setting for always-visible text. - In OBS, create or select the scene that will carry the prerecorded content.
- Add the prepared video files as Media Sources and arrange the playlist order or shuffle behavior as appropriate.
- Play through the scene and confirm the video transitions and subtitle appearance match your intended sequence.
- Connect OBS output to the YouTube Live setup for your account, then verify it with a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test stream before relying on it continuously.
Stream-key handling, ingest URL, latency choice, playlist looping details, and recovery depend on the actual account and setup. Verify these in the target environment rather than assuming one configuration works for every channel.
Troubleshooting common subtitle problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No subtitles appear in the output | The subtitle path or filter syntax may be wrong, the file may not be readable, or the build may not support the needed subtitle handling. | Confirm the subtitle file and path, inspect FFmpeg’s error output, and test with a short clip. Check the build’s filter documentation. |
| Text appears at the wrong time | Subtitle timings do not match the exact video cut. | Review synchronization and adjust the timed subtitle source, then render again. |
| Font or appearance is unexpected | The requested font may be unavailable or the styling may not be interpreted as expected. | Check installed fonts and ASS styling; if using a supplied font directory, verify its path and the relevant filter options. |
| Captions are hard to read or clipped | Placement, line length, contrast, or styling does not suit the footage or frame dimensions. | Adjust the subtitle style and safe-area placement, render another sample, and inspect it against bright and detailed scenes. |
| The clip works alone but not as expected in the playlist or live output | Playlist ordering, scene playback, or the YouTube Live configuration may differ from the local test. | Test the complete OBS scene and playlist, then verify the actual account and ingest setup using an appropriate test stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the prepared videos to loop on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your rendered files, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploads from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
