To start, choose UEFN for its brand-specific templates and Walker learning project, or use Fortnite Creative’s Flat Grid template and themed build assets. Publishing also came with Island Creator Program and TWDU-specific terms, including a 12% share of TWDU island engagement payouts with Skybound Entertainment under the published 2025 terms.
What The Walking Dead Universe added to Fortnite creation tools
Epic announced the TWDU creator launch on March 25, 2025. It brought franchise-themed tools to both UEFN and Fortnite Creative, rather than limiting the experience to a playable character or a single island. The launch package included Walker NPCs, themed weapons, prefabs and galleries, plus Heavy Linework, a comic-inspired post-processing effect. Epic’s announcement described Walkers as slow horde enemies that could bite players and damage environmental props.

Negan was a separate player-facing addition: Epic said he would become usable as an NPC in v34.30 and arrive as a playable Fortnite Shop character on April 4, 2025. That was digital Fortnite content, not a physical product.
Choose UEFN or Fortnite Creative
Both creation routes received TWDU content, but their starting points differed. UEFN offered two branded templates, including one designed to introduce Walker gameplay. Fortnite Creative offered a Flat Grid starting point plus prison-themed build assets. Pick the route that fits your workflow and desired tools; the launch materials do not establish one as universally better.

|---|---|---|
| UEFN | Prison Starter Island or Walker NPC Template; projects could also start from scratch with the brand selected. | Two brand templates, including a project for learning Walker gameplay. |
| Fortnite Creative | Flat Grid template. | Eight prison-themed prefabs and four prison-themed galleries. |
Epic’s UEFN documentation described the brand-template route and its starting projects.
Start a TWDU project in UEFN
- Open UEFN and go to Project Browser.
- Choose Brand Templates.
- In the All Brands dropdown, select The Walking Dead Universe.
- Choose Prison Starter Island to explore the prison setting, or Walker NPC Template to learn how Walker gameplay works. Alternatively, start from scratch with the brand selected.
Build in Fortnite Creative
In Fortnite Creative, begin with the Flat Grid template, then use the prison-themed prefabs and galleries to shape the island. The launch announcement listed eight prefabs and four galleries for this setting. Use the Walker NPCs, themed weapons and Heavy Linework effect where they support the island’s design rather than treating the assets as a complete finished experience.

What publishing required under the 2025 terms
Under the terms Epic published for the 2025 launch, creators needed to belong to the Island Creator Program, accept the additional TWDU terms in Creator Portal and follow the TWDU Brand and Creator Rules. Epic’s v34.20 release notes said creators who had already opted into LEGO or TMNT publishing terms did not need to sign the addendum again. Epic’s v34.20 release notes specified that creators agreed to share 12% of TWDU island engagement payout with Skybound Entertainment. These are the published 2025 terms; check Creator Portal for the requirements currently in effect.
When publishing opened—and the lighting issue
Epic originally planned to open TWDU island publishing on May 16, 2025 at 9 AM ET. An update on May 15 moved the time to 12 PM ET, and the v35.10 release notes confirmed that publishing opened at noon ET on May 16. The delay was tied to a lighting issue: published islands would temporarily revert to Chapter 4 Time of Day Manager, while islands made in Fortnite Creative remained on Chapter 5 Time of Day Manager and could have darker interiors. See Epic’s v35.10 release notes for the launch status and details.

How Epic planned to promote TWDU islands
At launch, Epic announced a dedicated Game Collection, a Skybound-curated “TWDU Picks” row, eligibility for other Discover placement including Epic’s Picks, and a player quest. Those were announcement plans for the 2025 rollout, not a guarantee that any placement, quest or collection remains available today.
