You do not need to feel completely comfortable before you begin: make the setup familiar, prepare a few points, and practise with short, low-stakes recordings. A phone is enough to start.
Start with the camera you already have
YouTube says a mobile device is a good place to begin before investing in a standalone camera. Choose equipment to match your style and production goals; you do not need to postpone speaking practice until you have a more elaborate setup. YouTube’s video equipment tips explain the options.
Make the recording session predictable
Choose a place where you can speak comfortably. Before recording, allow time to set up, check lighting and sound, and take breaks if you need them. For a shoot away from home, YouTube also recommends arriving early so you have time to get settled. A small routine—placing the phone, checking the frame, taking a breath, and starting with one short take—can make the session feel less unfamiliar.
Check the picture and sound first
- Turn off phone notifications so alerts do not interrupt you.
- Use soft, even light; if you are filming on a phone, natural light from a window can work well. YouTube notes that soft, even lighting helps the camera sensor retain detail in bright and dark areas.
- Keep yourself close to the phone’s microphone when possible.
- Record a brief test clip. Check that your face is framed as intended, the image is bright enough, and your words are easy to understand before attempting a longer take.
These steps remove avoidable technical distractions; they are not a guarantee that you will feel at ease immediately. See YouTube’s tips for filming with mobile for more setup guidance.

Use a repeatable practice routine
Vimeo’s creator guidance recommends knowing who a video is for, preparing what to say, breathing, and practising. Turn that advice into a short exercise: speak to one imagined viewer, record a brief take, review it for one specific improvement, and then record again. This review-and-repeat routine is a practical way to structure practice, not a tested promise of a particular result.
- Pick one small subject. Explain a single idea you could cover in under a minute.
- Choose one viewer. Picture a particular person who might find the explanation useful rather than addressing an abstract audience.
- Take a breath and record. Let the first take be practice. You do not have to publish it.
- Review one thing only. For example, notice whether the main point was clear or whether you spoke too quickly. Avoid judging your whole appearance or personality at once.
- Try again with that one adjustment. Keep the second take, compare it with the first, or stop for the day. Repeat the routine in later sessions at a pace that works for you.
There is no established amount of practice or fixed timeline that works for everyone. The point is to make each session manageable and give yourself a concrete next step.

Choose notes that fit the video
A full script, a short outline, and no notes can each suit a different speaker or format. Choose by weighing how reliably you need to cover specific points, how natural you want the delivery to feel, and how easily you can recover if you lose your place.
| Approach | Covering required points | Natural delivery | Recovering after losing your place |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full script | Provides the exact wording and sequence. | Can feel less conversational if you are focused on reciting. | You can find your place in the text, but may need to restart a sentence or section. |
| Short outline | Lists the key ideas without prescribing every sentence. | Leaves room to explain points in your own words. | Use the next bullet as a prompt and continue. |
| No notes | Depends on what you remember in the moment. | Lets you speak without looking at a script. | Pause, restate the point, or record another take. |
Try a short outline if a full script makes you feel as though you must recite every line; use a full script when exact wording matters. A teleprompter is another optional way to anchor a scripted recording without memorising every word. It is not a required confidence tool, and it will not suit everyone. Vimeo’s creator tips for presenting on video discuss preparation and teleprompters.

Keep gear upgrades optional
The built-in microphone is a sensible starting point when you can record close to the phone in a reasonably quiet space. An external microphone may be useful when you need to record farther from the device, but first check that your camera or phone supports the microphone connection. YouTube describes a wireless lavalier as one option for recording at a distance; there is no need to buy one just to begin practising.
| Audio option | Recording distance | Room noise | Compatibility and cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in microphone | Works best when you can stay close to the phone. | Nearby noise can be more noticeable, so choose a quiet spot. | No separate microphone purchase; use the device you have. |
| Optional external microphone | Can help when you need more distance from the camera. | Check your test clip in the actual room; an external mic does not remove every noise problem. | Confirm the device has a compatible external-microphone connection before buying. No specific model is recommended here. |

Some creators describe talking directly to a camera as awkward or say they freeze when they know it is recording. Those community posts are individual accounts, not evidence of how common the experience is or a clinical measure. If you recognise yourself in them, you can keep the next attempt small: test the setup, talk to one imagined viewer, and focus on one improvement rather than expecting nerves to vanish.
