A YouTube gaming VOD rerun channel starts with gameplay footage you have the rights to stream, an encoder configured in YouTube Live Control Room, and a plan to preserve and organize each broadcast. Schedule the stream, send the VOD through an encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and key, keep a local recording, then review and arrange the archive. The main constraints are rights, archive length, and the fact that rerunning gameplay does not automatically make a channel eligible for monetization.
1. Clear the footage and audio before you schedule
Owning the recording does not by itself establish every right needed to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms make creators responsible for obtaining the necessary rights, including music rights. Separately, monetizing gameplay depends on the commercial-use terms set by the game publisher. Check the current terms for the specific game and review the entire VOD for licensed music, overlays, guest contributions, and other third-party material. YouTube Terms of Service
YouTube’s live copyright system can detect third-party matches and interrupt or terminate a stream. Some licensed material may still require the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Keep permission and license records, but do not treat them as a guarantee against claims: archived streams can receive Content ID claims after the live broadcast. YouTube’s copyright guidance
- Confirm the publisher permits the intended public stream and, if relevant, commercial use.
- Check music and other third-party material separately from the gameplay rights.
- Remove or replace uncleared material before sending the VOD live.
- Keep documentation for permissions and licenses in case a rights question arises.
2. Schedule a rerun in YouTube Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create, then Go Live.
- Schedule the broadcast. In Live Control Room, open the Manage tab and schedule a stream. Create a new stream or reuse settings from a previous stream, then edit the details for this episode.
- Record the connection details. The stream setup provides a YouTube stream URL and stream key for the encoder. The key connects the encoder to the scheduled stream, so treat it like a password: do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot.
- Configure your encoder. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder, select the VOD as its media source, and confirm the scheduled stream and encoder are using the intended settings.
- Start the encoder for the scheduled event. YouTube’s setup guide instructs creators to start the encoder after entering the URL and key. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream status before the broadcast is underway. YouTube encoder setup guide
A scheduled stream can appear as upcoming, and viewers may choose Notify me. Use an accurate title that identifies the game and episode and makes clear that the stream is a rerun, rather than implying it is live gameplay. YouTube live stream settings

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Do not rely on the YouTube archive as the only copy of a long rerun. Record a local backup independently, and keep the broadcast below the stated limit if an automatic archive is important. YouTube: Archive live streams
3. Make the archive useful as an episode
After the broadcast, open the archive in YouTube Studio and review its visibility and metadata. YouTube uploads the archive by default; making it public can help future streams reach viewers. Group related reruns and highlight clips into playlists so viewers can follow a game, series, or event in order. YouTube: Archive live streams

- Use a clear title with the game, episode or event, and an explicit rerun label.
- Use the description to explain what the recording contains and identify relevant context.
- Organize episodes and clips into focused playlists.
- Do not treat tags as the main discovery tactic. YouTube says they have minimal impact in most cases, with value mainly for common misspellings. YouTube video tags guidance
4. Understand what reruns mean for monetization
YouTube says gameplay monetization depends on the commercial-use rights granted by the game publisher. It also warns that extended gameplay without qualifying commentary may not be accepted for monetization. Its guidance describes qualifying commentary as step-by-step, connected to the action, and instructional or educational. A recording being yours, or being broadcast live as a rerun, is not by itself a monetization qualification. YouTube: Video game and software content
Monetization review also applies to the channel as a whole. YouTube’s reused-content policy concerns republished material without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. In July 2025, YouTube renamed its repetitious-content policy “inauthentic content” and clarified its treatment of repetitive or mass-produced content; it said the update did not change the reused-content policy. Copyright and monetization review are separate questions: having the rights to use footage does not automatically establish that a channel meets monetization policies. If a channel is eligible and monetization is enabled, YouTube documents options including ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships for some channels. Ads are not guaranteed to serve, so revenue depends on eligibility, policy compliance, audience, and ad delivery. YouTube monetization features
5. Use Live Redirect for a programmed handoff
Live Redirect can send viewers at the end of a stream to a Premiere or another live stream. YouTube’s stated eligibility requires the sending channel to have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Choose a workflow that fits your setup
The practical choice depends on what you already have, not on a universal hardware shopping list. YouTube’s encoder workflow needs an encoder and the stream URL and key, but it does not establish that every creator must buy a dedicated PC, capture card, microphone, or storage drive. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup without prescribing a particular storage product.
