A low-cost PC can send a bhajan playlist to YouTube Live around the clock, but no particular budget computer can be called a guaranteed 24/7 build without testing. For a mostly static prerecorded stream, start by trialling 720p at 30 fps, use YouTube’s encoder settings, connect over Ethernet where possible, and test the complete setup—including power and internet recovery—before relying on it. The right machine depends on your video, encoder, cooling and tolerance for outages.

Decide what the PC needs to stream

First choose between a prerecorded playlist and a live production. A playlist loop mainly needs to read the video, encode or pass it through in the chosen format, and keep a stable connection to YouTube. A live setup with a camera, microphone, mixer or overlays adds input devices and production work; that may change the CPU, encoder and storage requirements.

YouTube describes encoder streaming as suitable for external audio/video equipment and advanced production, but that does not mean a simple bhajan loop needs a production workstation. YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance also lists cloud tools for continuous prerecorded streams, which can be an alternative when you do not need a local camera or mixer in the signal path.

Choose a sensible starting output

For a mostly static devotional video, trial 720p at 30 fps before considering a higher resolution. This is a practical starting point, not a guarantee that every PC can encode it continuously. Make the choice based on the quality you need, what the encoder software supports, the machine’s sustained cooling and load, and the upload connection available at the streaming location.

YouTube’s current encoder settings distinguish minimum from recommended H.264 bitrates. They are encoder output rates—not a promise that an internet plan’s advertised upload speed will be continuously available.

Output YouTube H.264 minimum bitrate YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

Use the resolution and frame rate you have tested, rather than choosing a higher setting simply because the PC or source file can produce it. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream and checking stream health before going live. Its encoder settings and bitrate guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), RTMP or RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection.

Select the PC without assuming a guaranteed build

The available guidance does not establish a tested low-cost PC model, a universal hardware threshold, or a dependable India price for continuous bhajan streaming. Compare a compact mini PC with a used desktop only after deciding your target resolution, frame rate, codec and streaming software. Check the manufacturer-supported operating system, cooling design, storage condition, network interface, warranty and encoder compatibility.

  • Cooling: A system that works for a short test may behave differently under sustained load. Check temperatures and encoder load during an extended trial.
  • Storage: Confirm that the drive is healthy and has enough usable space for the source files, playlist and any local recording you intend to keep.
  • Network: Prefer wired Ethernet when practical. Test sustained upload at the intended encoder bitrate and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
  • Recovery: Find out how your encoder reconnects after a network interruption and how you will notice and respond if the PC, router or service stops.

Leave upload headroom for variation and other devices using the same connection. That is practical operating advice, not a fixed multiplier published by YouTube. A local PC still depends on local power, internet service and hardware recovery.

Set up YouTube Live and the encoder

  1. Confirm channel eligibility and activation. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and check that the channel can go live. First-time live activation can take time, so confirm it well before the planned start rather than assuming the channel will be ready immediately.
  2. Create or select the stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a stream or select the event you intend to use. Locate the server URL and stream key for that stream.
  3. Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in your encoder, choose the tested resolution and frame rate, then set H.264 video to CBR with a two-second keyframe interval. Use AAC or MP3 audio and RTMPS where supported.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot or public document. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  5. Test the full programme. Send a private or unlisted test as appropriate, with representative bhajan audio and the same movement or visuals planned for the real stream. Check audio, picture, bitrate and stream health in the Live Control Room.
  6. Run an extended trial. Observe CPU or hardware-encoder load, temperatures, dropped frames and reconnection behavior before depending on the system. This is an operational precaution, not a YouTube-published test duration or a validated hardware test.
  7. Start and monitor the broadcast. Confirm that the Live Control Room is receiving a healthy encoder feed and that the intended stream is live. Keep a way to check the stream and respond to an interruption.

Plan for upload, outages and archives

How much upload speed do you need?

Use the encoder bitrate as the baseline and test the connection at the location and time you plan to stream. For example, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for H.264 720p30 and 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30; these are video encoder bitrates, not the required advertised ISP-plan speeds. Other household traffic and upload variation can affect stability, so verify actual stream health with headroom.

India has a separate, service-specific reference: the National Informatics Centre’s webcast service guidance specifies 2–4 Mbps dedicated bandwidth per stream and access to outbound RTMP port 1935. That is the NIC service’s requirement, not a substitute for YouTube’s encoder bitrate guidance or a general YouTube minimum.

Do you need a UPS?

A UPS is useful if you need the encoder to ride through power interruptions, but there is no single size that can be recommended from the information available. Size it from the measured load of the PC and the other equipment you need to keep running, plus the runtime you want. Include the modem and router in the backup plan; protecting only the PC will not preserve the stream if the network equipment loses power.

Raspberry Pi documentation says the Raspberry Pi 5 recommended power supply is 27 W and lists typical bare-board active current of 800 mA. Those figures apply to that Pi model and condition, not to a mini PC or a complete streaming setup; the documentation notes that current use depends on connected peripherals. Do not use them as a substitute for measuring your own system.

Account for long-running broadcasts

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer-running broadcast, plan archive handling separately and check YouTube’s current rules before treating one uninterrupted stream as an archive strategy.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube is not receiving the encoder: Check that the stream is activated, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the stream key has not been reset. Confirm the encoder is actually sending and inspect the Live Control Room.
  • Connection health is unstable or frames are dropping: Test upload at the intended bitrate, use Ethernet if possible, reduce competing network traffic and, if needed, trial a lower output resolution or bitrate that remains within YouTube’s settings guidance.
  • The PC slows down or becomes unstable over time: Check sustained CPU or hardware-encoder load, temperature, cooling and storage health. A short successful test does not establish reliable continuous operation.
  • The stream stops after an outage: Check power to the PC, router and modem, then confirm how the encoder reconnects. Test recovery behavior before relying on automatic reconnection.
  • The archive is missing or incomplete: Check the stream duration and current YouTube archive rules; a broadcast lasting 12 hours or more is outside the under-12-hours automatic-archive statement.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded bhajan playlist that only needs to reach YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the cloud keeps the stream running, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops it. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not camera-based live production. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
