The setup does not provide music rights or guarantee uninterrupted uptime: YouTube can interrupt streams that match unapproved third-party content, and a local OBS stream depends on the computer and internet connection staying available.
Before you build the playlist, clear the music rights
Do not assume that buying a track, crediting its creator, or finding it online gives you permission to livestream it. YouTube’s Live Stream Terms and Conditions say streamers must have the necessary rights for their live content, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If it identifies content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. For music licensed from a third party, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license by itself may not prevent interruptions if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams.
- Keep written permission or license records for every track or catalog.
- Check that permission covers both the sound recording and the composition, continuous livestreaming, your intended territories, and any archived playback.
- Ask the relevant rights holder about Content ID allowlisting if the music is licensed.
Which rights holder controls a particular Assamese song, and which license applies, must be confirmed for that song. Do not assume a general catalog license covers every recording or territory.

Choose a single looping file or a playlist
OBS offers two useful approaches for prerecorded music. A Media Source loops one file; a VLC Video source plays a playlist. Choose based on whether you need one continuous program file or control over individual tracks and their order.
| Approach | Best suited to | Behavior and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One prepared audio or video file | Enable Loop to restart the file when it ends. Replacing or rearranging individual tracks means editing the source file. |
| VLC Video playlist | A set of separate tracks or audiovisual files | Supports a playlist, looping, and shuffle. VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS; track order is easier to manage individually. |
These looping and playlist options are documented in the OBS media sources guide. For either approach, use local files you have permission to stream. Build a simple scene with a static image or a visual loop and the media source. Watch the OBS audio mixer meters to confirm that sound is reaching the scene.

Enable YouTube Live and create an encoder stream
- Confirm live access. Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Live Control Room. If this is the first time enabling live streaming on the channel, activation may take up to 24 hours. Check access before scheduling a launch; see YouTube’s live-streaming enablement instructions.
- Set up an encoder stream. In Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and open its stream settings. Copy the stream URL and stream key for the OBS connection. YouTube describes the key as acting like a password and address: keep it private, and reset it if exposed.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube or the relevant YouTube service option, and enter the stream key. Use the RTMPS workflow where available. YouTube’s current encoder settings guide recommends RTMPS.
- Start privately for a test. Start streaming from OBS and confirm that the Live Control Room receives the feed. Check the watch page from another device and verify the picture and audio before making the stream public.
Set OBS video, audio, and bitrate for a stable feed
YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on resolution and codec. For H.264, YouTube lists recommended video bitrates of 5 Mbps at 720p30 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or connection can sustain them.
| Setting | Starting point from YouTube’s guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | Use the codec and resolution combination supported by your encoder and connection. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set a steady target bitrate rather than allowing large bitrate swings. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Match the interval recommended for YouTube encoder streams. |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30; 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 | Choose a value that leaves upload headroom and remains stable during a test. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Confirm the mixer is receiving the intended audio source. |
For a music channel with a largely static visual, stable 720p or 1080p can be more useful than a higher resolution that the connection cannot sustain. YouTube says the total stream bitrate should fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends about 20% headroom. Its encoder settings guide contains the resolution- and codec-specific recommendations; confirm the current values there when configuring a different format.

Keep the computer and connection ready for continuous operation
A local OBS stream runs only while the computer, OBS, and network are working. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health during the event. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming; its connection troubleshooting guide covers network issues.
- Use Ethernet if the computer and router have compatible ports and can be connected by a suitable cable. A Cat6 cable is an optional way to make that wired connection, not a guarantee of uptime.
- Prevent the computer from sleeping while the stream is running, and check that long-running operation does not cause overheating.
- Arrange for a person to monitor the stream and restart OBS or address a network or computer failure if one occurs.
- Do not treat a local preview or a short test as proof of 24/7 availability. Neither YouTube’s encoder guidance nor OBS’s setup guide certifies a specific computer or backup power unit for continuous uptime.
Test the full setup before announcing the channel
- Run the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard or review its recommended settings, then test before going live. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends configuration and testing before a stream.
- Make a test recording or private/unlisted stream. Listen across track boundaries and confirm the playlist loops as intended.
- Check the Live Control Room’s stream health and open the watch page on another device to confirm the public-facing picture and sound.
- Run a longer private test under conditions similar to the planned stream. Watch for dropped frames, interruptions, gaps between tracks, or a computer that sleeps or overheats.
- Write down who will monitor the channel and what they should do if the feed stops. A local OBS loop does not restart itself after every possible computer, power, network, or YouTube-side failure.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS sends no audio | The wrong source is selected, playback is stopped, or the mixer is not receiving the source. | Check the media source playback and OBS audio mixer meters. Confirm the intended source is part of the active scene. |
| The stream stops or shows a placeholder | YouTube detected third-party material, or the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. | Check YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance, verify permissions, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. |
| Feed is unstable or drops frames | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or Wi-Fi is unreliable. | Use wired Ethernet where practical, reduce resolution or bitrate, and test against YouTube’s recommended upload headroom. |
| VLC Video is missing in OBS | VLC is not installed. | Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list. |
| Playlist ends instead of continuing | Loop Playlist is disabled or the media source’s loop setting is off. | Check the relevant loop control and test the end of the final item before launch. |
| Cannot start a first live stream | Live streaming has not been enabled yet. | Enable it in YouTube and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
