YouTube says that link is clickable; URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are not. If your stream is already live in vertical format, viewers using the YouTube app can also pause a Short and tap Live to enter the vertical live feed. Scheduled streams do not appear there, so promote those in advance through supported channel surfaces.
Choose the right route for your stream

Build a Short that gives viewers a reason to continue
Make the Short a real preview
Choose a compelling moment from the live programme or a recurring segment that viewers can expect to find there. Make the connection explicit: tell viewers what they can watch in the live stream and, for a scheduled event, when it starts. This is editorial guidance, not a YouTube requirement or a promise of conversion.
Attach the Related Video
- In YouTube Studio, open the Short’s details and select the Related Video feature.
- Choose the relevant destination from the available videos, then save and verify the selection in Studio.
- Make the Short’s spoken or on-screen call to action match that destination. If the Short points to a highlight or other video rather than the live event, explain how that video connects to the programme.
YouTube identifies the Related Video link as clickable. Its guidance does not establish that every creator can attach every live URL or that the feature will deliver a particular number of viewers.
Know which links viewers can tap
- Short descriptions and comments: URLs there are not clickable. Do not make a pasted URL the main route into the stream.
- Related Video: clickable in Shorts, making it the most direct Short-level link documented by YouTube.
- Channel profile: profile links are clickable, and YouTube allows up to 14 links on the channel page. This can support a broader route to the channel or event.
- Live chat: YouTube lists live-chat URLs as clickable for horizontal live streams, but not when viewed in the mobile app’s vertical live feed. Do not rely on a chat URL to route vertical-feed viewers.
Promote a scheduled stream before it starts
A scheduled stream is not discoverable through the vertical live feed in the same way as a stream already live in vertical format. Give viewers an advance route to the event instead.

- Share the event link early. YouTube recommends sharing a live-stream link at least 48 hours before going live.
- Use channel surfaces. Make the event easy to find from your channel’s Live Section and use a teaser or trailer to explain what viewers will see.
- Repeat the time clearly. In Shorts and other promotion, state the event’s start time and relevant time zone so viewers know when to return.
- Connect the Short to a suitable destination. Use Related Video when an appropriate item is available, and use clickable channel or event surfaces for the scheduled link.
Turn a live stream into future discovery
After a broadcast, YouTube recommends using highlights and the public archive to help future viewers find the content. A public archive may extend the life of a programme beyond its live window. YouTube also describes eligibility for creating Shorts highlights from qualifying mobile livestreams: the stream must be 10 minutes to 12 hours long, vertical, streamed through the YouTube mobile app, and have chat enabled. Screencasts and Made for Kids streams are among the exclusions. Check the current YouTube Help guidance for the full eligibility rules before planning around this feature.
Plan 24/7 operation separately from discovery
Shorts can help viewers discover or revisit a channel, but YouTube’s documented setup guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 uptime or define a guaranteed always-on streaming method. Its overview describes mobile, webcam, and encoder approaches; it recommends testing a stream and monitoring audio and video quality. Professional-grade hardware encoders are recommended for higher-production-value events, not established as mandatory for continuous streaming.

Operational checks for a creator-managed stream
- Test the entire streaming chain before relying on it: source, connection, stream configuration, audio, and video.
- Monitor the broadcast and decide how you will respond if the stream stops or quality degrades. Treat recovery as an operational plan, not a platform guarantee.
- Review stream settings and stream-key guidance in YouTube Studio. Keep the stream key private and use the configured event or stream rather than exposing the key in a Short or public post.
- Use only content you have the necessary rights to broadcast, including music. YouTube’s livestream terms make creators responsible for having those rights and complying with applicable laws and rules.
Measure the route instead of assuming it works
Use YouTube Analytics and Studio to assess whether the Shorts and channel surfaces are bringing viewers to your content. The cited YouTube guidance does not provide a benchmark conversion rate from Shorts views to live viewers. Treat a rate as specific to your channel only after measuring it, and compare like with like—for example, similar Shorts, destinations, and promotion periods.
