To batch-resize videos for a YouTube playlist stream, use FFmpeg for a repeatable command-line workflow or HandBrake for a graphical queue. For footage that is not 16:9, fit it inside a 1920×1080 frame with padding or crop it deliberately; do not stretch it by default. Try one representative file first, inspect the result, and keep your originals.
Before resizing: decide what 1920×1080 should look like
A 1920×1080 frame has a 16:9 aspect ratio. If a source is already 16:9, resizing it to those dimensions can preserve its composition. If it has a different shape, you must choose how it will fit:
- Fit with padding: preserve the entire image and add bars in the unused space. This is the safest choice when no picture content should be lost.
- Fill by cropping: preserve proportions but cut off part of the image. Inspect the edges to make sure faces, captions, or other important details are not lost.
- Stretch: force the image into 16:9 without preserving proportions. This distorts people and objects, so it is generally a poor default.
FFmpeg documents ways to fit or cover a target frame, while its FAQ explains that scaling normally preserves display aspect ratio. If an image looks stretched, check its sample and display aspect ratio metadata before trying to correct it (FFmpeg scaling filter documentation; FFmpeg FAQ).
Resizing changes dimensions, not the detail captured by the camera. Upscaling a smaller source to 1920×1080 does not create missing detail.

Prepare the files and choose a batch method
Make a safe working set
- Keep the original videos in a separate folder and direct resized files to a new output folder.
- Check each video’s orientation, dimensions, frame rate, interlacing, audio, subtitles, and color requirements. Do not assume every file in a collection has the same properties.
- Choose a representative file for a trial encode. Watch it before processing the rest, paying particular attention to framing, image quality, audio, and any subtitles.
YouTube recommends deinterlacing interlaced content before upload; its example converts 1080i60 to 1080p30. Keep that in mind if any source is interlaced (YouTube recommended upload encoding settings).
Choose FFmpeg or HandBrake
| Tool | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg | Scripted, repeatable processing with control over the filter chain. | Confirm the framing filter, stream mapping, audio, subtitles, color handling, and output for your files. |
| HandBrake | A graphical workflow with presets and a visible queue. | Choose a creator preset suitable for video-hosting services, set dimensions and cropping, and verify the queued preset and output location before starting. |
FFmpeg supports filtering during transcoding (FFmpeg documentation). HandBrake documents Creator presets for video-hosting services such as YouTube and Vimeo, as well as hardware presets intended to maximize encoding speed on supported hardware (HandBrake official presets). Those categories do not guarantee a particular batch’s speed or visual quality.

Batch resize with FFmpeg
This Bash example processes common .mp4 files in the current directory, one at a time. It fits each picture inside 1920×1080, preserves its proportions, and pads the remaining space black. It encodes video as H.264 with libx264, sets the pixel format to yuv420p, encodes audio as AAC, and puts MP4 metadata at the front of the file for fast start.
mkdir -p resized
for f in ./*.mp4; do
[ -e "$f" ] || continue
base=${f##*/}
ffmpeg -i "$f"
-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -movflags +faststart
"resized/${base%.*}_1080p.mp4"
done
Run it from a directory containing the intended inputs. The resized folder keeps the outputs separate from the originals. The command does not force a frame rate, which avoids silently replacing the recorded rate. The scale-and-pad filter is an example of fitting while preserving aspect ratio (FFmpeg scaling filter documentation).

Limitations to check before processing a whole library
This is a starting recipe, not a universal quality, file-size, or compatibility setting. It does not cover unusual audio layouts, subtitles, HDR-to-SDR conversion, variable-frame-rate edge cases, or every codec and stream-mapping need. Inspect your representative output and verify the command against the actual collection before applying it broadly. FFmpeg’s scaler documentation describes additional scaling options (FFmpeg Scaler Documentation).
If you want to crop instead of adding bars
Use a scale-to-cover and crop workflow only when the lost edges are acceptable. Inspect the output, especially near the frame boundaries. A bare scale=1920:1080 is not a framing decision: understand how aspect ratios are handled for your source rather than assuming that it will preserve the composition. The appropriate filter chain can depend on pixel aspect ratio, orientation, and cropping needs (FFmpeg scaling filter documentation; FFmpeg FAQ).

Batch resize with HandBrake
- Open the source videos in HandBrake and choose a Creator preset suited to uploading to a video host.
- Set the intended output dimensions and review the cropping behavior. Make sure the frame will fit as intended rather than accidentally cropping important content.
- Add the files to the queue. Check the preset and output location for the queued items before starting the batch.
- Encode one representative file and inspect it before queuing the rest of the collection.
HandBrake documents its preset categories, including Creator presets for video-hosting services and hardware presets for supported devices (official presets). The exact controls and available hardware options may depend on your HandBrake version and system.

| Output consideration | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Container and video codec | MP4 and H.264 |
| Scan and frame rate | Progressive scan; deinterlace interlaced material before upload. Keep the frame rate the same as the recording. |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 is the standard computer-player aspect ratio. The player adapts to other uploaded aspect ratios. |
| SDR color | BT.709 is recommended. |
| 1080p SDR bitrate, standard frame rates | 8 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps |
| 1080p SDR bitrate, high frame rates | 12 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps |
| 1080p HDR bitrate, standard frame rates | 10 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps |
| 1080p HDR bitrate, high frame rates | 15 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps |
These bitrates are YouTube’s recommendations, not hard limits or proof that a particular encode will look better. The example FFmpeg command does not set a target bitrate; choose and verify encoding settings for the source and intended result.
Know which YouTube workflow you mean
A playlist of uploaded videos and a live encoder feed are different workflows. Resizing files prepares them for upload and playback as videos; it does not itself create a live ingest stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes 1080p as a valid inbound resolution setting for a live stream and points to its encoder recommendations (YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams). If your aim is to keep prerecorded videos playing as a continuous YouTube live stream, confirm whether your workflow is a playlist of uploaded videos or an encoder sending a live feed before configuring live settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with prerecorded videos, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos or a playlist from the cloud. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery helps if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
