YouTube usually saves an eligible live stream automatically: there is no separate archive switch to turn on. After the broadcast, open YouTube Studio > Content > Live and select the stream. The important exception is duration: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be archived, but streams over 12 hours may not be captured. For a long broadcast, make a separate local recording as a backup.
How YouTube saves a live stream
YouTube Help says eligible live streams are automatically archived and the archive is uploaded by default. This applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. For the normal YouTube archive workflow, you do not need to enable a separate setting before going live.
YouTube’s stated limit is important: streams under 12 hours can be archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. The Help pages reviewed do not state when they were published or revised; the guidance was accessed on October 3, 2026.
Find and manage the recording in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio for the channel that hosted the broadcast.
- In the left menu, select Content, then open the Live tab.
- Select the completed stream to review its archive and visibility.
- Use the archive’s available controls to change its visibility or delete it if needed.
Archives of mobile streams can also be managed from My videos. The archive may take time to become available after the broadcast ends, so check again if it does not appear immediately.

What the DVR setting does—and does not do
DVR is a live-viewing feature that lets viewers pause and rewind while a broadcast is in progress. YouTube says turning DVR off does not prevent the full recording from appearing after the stream. It is separate from the automatic archive, so changing DVR is not a way to enable or disable the later recording.
Make a local backup for long or important broadcasts
A local recording gives you a copy independent of the YouTube archive. YouTube specifically recommends keeping one as a backup, especially because a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. You do not have to buy a new drive if your existing storage has enough free space; an external drive is one optional destination.

Choose a recording workflow
If you broadcast through an encoder, use recording-capable streaming software to save a local copy of the program you are sending. YouTube lists Open Broadcaster Software among encoder options. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not document universal menu steps for OBS or other encoders, so recording controls will depend on the software and version you use.
Before the broadcast, check that the recording is enabled in your encoder, that the destination is writable, and that the drive has room for the full duration at your chosen resolution and bitrate. Keep the file until you have confirmed the YouTube archive is present and playable. A local file can also be useful if you later need to edit or retain the program, but it is not a replacement for checking the platform archive.

Estimate storage from your own settings
Required space depends on the stream’s bitrate, duration, audio, and recording format. As a rough planning method, multiply the total recording bitrate in megabits per second by the number of seconds, then divide by eight to estimate megabytes; allow extra space for container overhead and other files. For example, this calculation is only an estimate, not a guaranteed file size. Check available disk space before starting and verify the completed file opens.
Troubleshoot a missing or incomplete archive
- The stream is not listed: Confirm you are in the correct channel’s YouTube Studio and have opened Content > Live. Check My videos as well for a mobile stream.
- The broadcast lasted more than 12 hours: YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. A local backup is the recovery option if one was recorded; the platform guidance does not promise that an archive can be restored afterward.
- The archive is present but not viewable as expected: Select the stream in Studio and review its visibility. YouTube’s archive controls allow visibility changes.
- You turned DVR off and expected that to block recording: DVR only affects pause-and-rewind during the live broadcast; it does not prevent the full post-stream recording from appearing.
- The local recording is missing or stops early: Check that your encoder’s recording feature was enabled, the selected destination was available and writable, and sufficient storage remained for the broadcast. Exact controls differ by software.
