For quick PS5 clips, start with the console’s built-in capture tools. For recording console gameplay on a computer—with OBS scenes, audio controls, or an editing archive—use OBS Studio with a compatible capture device, or capture the PS Remote Play or Xbox app window over a fast console-to-PC network. Switch-family consoles need to be docked for the capture-device route; Switch Lite cannot use it.
These are different parts of the workflow: OBS is the recording software, while a capture card is one way to get console video into the computer. A capture card is useful, but not necessary for every recording task.
Which recording method fits your console?

OBS documentation describes both a capture-device workflow and an app-window workflow for console footage. These official workflow descriptions establish available paths, not comparative independent test results.
Record a clip directly on PS5
Start a new recording
- Open the PS5 Create menu.
- Select Start New Recording to record gameplay. PlayStation Support says, “You can record up to 1 hour of gameplay.”
- When finished, use the console’s capture controls to stop and save the recording.
Save gameplay that already happened
- Open the Create menu and choose Save Recent Gameplay.
- Choose the segment length, from the last 15 seconds up to one hour.
- Save the selected recent gameplay as a clip.
Set format, resolution, and audio
Open the PS5 capture options to adjust file format and resolution and to choose whether microphone or voice-chat audio is included. If recording voice-chat participants, ask them before including their voices. Some scenes cannot be captured, so a blocked scene is not necessarily a settings failure.

Record console gameplay on a computer with OBS
Option 1: Use a capture device
- Connect a capture device that supports your console’s video output and your computer’s operating system and interface.
- Connect the console’s video output to the device. If you want to play on a separate display, check the device’s passthrough connections and supported passthrough modes.
- In OBS Studio, add the device as a Video Capture Source and select the connected device.
- Set the source to a capture resolution and frame rate supported by the device and computer. Confirm audio routing separately so that game sound and any desired microphone audio reach the recording.
- Record a short test, check the saved file for picture and sound, then start the full recording.
Do not treat a device’s maximum passthrough resolution or frame rate as its maximum recording capability. Compare its capture modes and passthrough modes separately. Also check HDR support: it may not be available at every capture resolution and frame-rate combination.
Option 2: Capture a console-streaming app window
- Use PS Remote Play for PlayStation footage or the Xbox app for Xbox footage to stream the console display to the computer.
- Open OBS and add a Window Capture source for the relevant app.
- Check the captured window and audio, then record a short test before committing to a longer session.
This route avoids a capture device, but relies on the network connection between console and computer. OBS notes that a faster connection is needed to maintain optimal quality.

What to check before choosing a capture card
A capture card is an acquisition device, not recording software. OBS can record the signal it receives, but the device determines which console signals and capture modes are available. Confirm these details for the exact model rather than relying on a headline maximum specification.
- Console compatibility: Verify support for your console and its output signal.
- Capture versus passthrough: Check both the resolution and frame rate you can record and the signal you can pass through to a display.
- HDR and other video requirements: Confirm the combinations the device supports; HDR recording is not available at every resolution and frame rate on every device.
- Computer requirements: Check operating-system, connection-interface, and software compatibility.
- Audio: Confirm how game audio reaches OBS and whether the setup supports the microphone or chat audio you intend to record.
- Console form factor: Switch-family capture-device workflows require a docked system; Switch Lite cannot use this route.
As one concrete example, Elgato lists its Game Capture 4K X as compatible with PS5/Pro, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and other devices, and lists OBS among supported apps. Its product information separates passthrough performance from capture modes and notes HDR limitations at some resolution/frame-rate combinations. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent test or a universal recommendation.

Troubleshooting common recording problems
OBS shows a black or missing console picture
- For a capture-device setup, confirm the device is connected, selected as the Video Capture Source, and receiving a signal from the console.
- Check that the console’s output mode is supported by the device’s capture modes.
- For an app-window setup, confirm the console is streaming to the correct app and OBS is capturing that app’s window.
The recording looks worse than the display
- Check the device’s capture specification rather than its passthrough maximum.
- For Remote Play or the Xbox app, assess the console-to-computer network; the window-capture route depends on it.
- Review HDR support for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
The video records but audio is missing
- Check the audio source and routing in the capture device or app-window setup and in OBS.
- On PS5, review capture options to confirm whether microphone or voice-chat audio is included.
PS5 will not capture a particular scene
Some PS5 scenes are blocked from capture. Changing resolution or recording settings does not necessarily remove that restriction.

A Switch Lite will not appear through a capture card
The capture-card workflow for Switch-family consoles depends on docking. Switch Lite cannot be docked, so it is not compatible with that capture-device route.
