The API creates and manages the broadcast; it does not turn a regular YouTube channel playlist into a live video source.
How the pieces fit together
A YouTube Live setup has two separate jobs:
- Media playback: FFmpeg reads your local video files and sends their audio-video feed to YouTube’s current ingest endpoint using your stream key.
- Broadcast management: Python authenticates to YouTube and creates or selects a stream, creates a scheduled broadcast, binds the broadcast to the stream, checks status, and manages transitions.
Google describes a broadcast as a distinct YouTube video. A liveStream represents the incoming feed; a liveBroadcast represents the event viewers watch. One stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times and may be bound to up to three broadcasts, according to Google’s Live Streaming API documentation.
This guide is for an Ubuntu host that has access to the video files and can keep an encoder process running. India does not have a separate API workflow established in the cited documentation. Confirm live-streaming is enabled for your actual YouTube channel before building the automation.
Prepare compatible video files
Create a fixed concat list
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads files listed in a text file one after another, as if their packets had been joined. Create a playlist file, for example playlist.txt:

file '/srv/videos/part-01.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/part-02.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/part-03.mp4'
Use paths the Ubuntu account running FFmpeg can read. The file list is a playback sequence, not a YouTube channel playlist. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for its directives and behavior.
Check the inputs before streaming
Concat demuxing works best when the files have the same streams, codecs, and time base. FFmpeg warns that duration inaccuracies can produce artifacts or gaps. If the files differ, normalize or transcode them in advance to a consistent format rather than assuming stream-copy concatenation will work cleanly. The exact output settings depend on the media and YouTube’s current ingest configuration; there is no single resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, or ingest address established for every channel and file.
On Ubuntu, install an FFmpeg package supported by your release or use a deliberately pinned build, then check the local manual and version with ffmpeg -version and man ffmpeg. Online FFmpeg documentation can describe options newer than a distribution package.

Set up YouTube API access securely
Use OAuth authorization for the channel whose broadcasts you intend to manage. Google’s broadcast insertion reference lists YouTube write scopes, including the YouTube and YouTube force-SSL scopes. Follow the current setup and authorization requirements in the broadcast insert reference.
- Keep client credentials, OAuth refresh credentials, and the stream key out of source control.
- Do not print secrets in application logs or expose them in shared command histories.
- Store credentials with permissions restricted to the Ubuntu account that needs them.
- Pin the Python API client version in your deployment and verify that its generated methods match the API reference you are implementing.
Do not hard-code a stream key into a published script or example. Load it from a protected secret store or a restricted local configuration source when launching the media process.
Schedule, bind, and start a broadcast
The usual API lifecycle is to select or create a liveStream, create a liveBroadcast, bind the broadcast to the stream, verify that the feed is active, and then transition the broadcast. Google’s implementation guide documents this sequence and the testing/live transitions.

- Select or create the stream. Use
liveStreams.listto find a configured stream, orliveStreams.insertto create one. Stream settings describe the feed and delivery configuration. - Create the scheduled event. Call
liveBroadcasts.insertwith the required title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Use a future UTC ISO 8601 timestamp; Google’s API requires the scheduled start time to be in the future. Check that live streaming is enabled and that the request is authorized. - Bind the event to the stream. Call
liveBroadcasts.bindwith the broadcast and stream identifiers. A broadcast must be associated with a stream to receive its feed. - Start FFmpeg. Launch the encoder with the concat list and the channel’s current ingest endpoint and stream key. Configure output to suit the actual media and ingest requirements rather than copying arbitrary settings.
- Check readiness before transition. Inspect FFmpeg’s output and the stream’s status and health. Google’s Python client guidance says to confirm the bound stream is active before transitioning a broadcast to testing.
- Transition deliberately. Once the correct event is selected and the bound stream is active, use the API transition operation to move the broadcast through its documented state. Do not transition an event merely because the FFmpeg process started.
The API is not an FFmpeg process manager. Keep OAuth/API logic separate from process startup and shutdown, exit-code handling, logs, and recovery policy. Python’s generated client exposes methods such as list, insert, bind, and transition; consult the YouTube API Python client reference for the installed client’s interface.
Choose a playlist rotation strategy
Fixed list
A fixed concat text file is the simplest option when you want a known sequence. Treat it as static for the duration of a run: the concat documentation does not establish that arbitrary edits are reloaded by a running process. To change the sequence, implement and test a controlled restart or another explicit rotation mechanism.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSupervisor-controlled changes
For scheduled or changing content, let Python supervise the encoder: decide when to stop it, update or generate the next playlist, restart the process, record the exit status, and verify the resulting stream state. Test whether the resulting transition or restart gap is acceptable on your exact FFmpeg build and channel configuration. Do not assume that dynamic edits, reconnects, or uninterrupted handoffs are guaranteed.

Local files or network-mounted media
Local storage keeps the media source on the Ubuntu host; a network-mounted library can avoid keeping the full collection there but adds dependence on the mount and network path. The documentation cited here does not benchmark performance, cost, or reliability between these choices. Test access permissions, read stability, and behavior when a file becomes unavailable.

| Symptom | Likely checks | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast insert is rejected | OAuth scope and authorization; channel live-streaming enablement; required title, future start time, and privacy status; API error details. | Correct the missing or invalid request field, confirm the channel can livestream, and inspect the API’s returned error rather than retrying unchanged requests. |
| The stream is not active when you try to go live | Whether FFmpeg is still running; whether it is sending to the current ingest endpoint with the correct key; stream status and health. | Resolve the feed issue and confirm the bound stream is active before attempting the documented transition. |
| Artifacts or gaps appear between files | Compare the files’ stream layouts, codecs, time bases, and durations. | Normalize or transcode inconsistent inputs and test the complete sequence before scheduling an event. |
| A playlist edit does not change playback | Whether the current FFmpeg process has loaded the list already; whether your supervisor actually restarted or replaced it. | Use an explicit, tested rotation method. Do not rely on live text-file edits to refresh the running demuxer. |
| The encoder exits or the feed drops | FFmpeg exit status, timestamps, non-secret command configuration, network and ingest state, and current API state. | Log useful diagnostics without secrets, set bounded retries and alerting, and test recovery behavior. Do not describe the system as guaranteed 24/7 without evidence from your own deployment. |
Copyright, reused content, and channel rules
Before putting a video into a public live rotation, make sure you have the rights needed to stream its footage, music, narration, and other included material. A stream key or API authorization does not grant copyright permission. Review YouTube’s current policies and the channel’s live-streaming status in YouTube Studio; API availability alone does not establish that every channel or video is eligible.
Repeating or compiling material does not by itself establish that it meets YouTube’s monetization or originality requirements. Check the current YouTube Partner Program policies for reused-content rules and assess the actual content and rights situation rather than assuming that automation changes the outcome.
