Those are separate from starting or managing a live broadcast. Whether a third-party cloud player notices the playlist change—and how quickly—depends on that provider, so confirm the update in the hosted service before expecting the video to play.
How do I add a new video to a YouTube livestream playlist remotely?
The YouTube-side method is to insert an existing YouTube video into an existing playlist. The YouTube Data API requires OAuth 2.0 authorization for this playlist-item insertion. It does not upload a video file. See the YouTube playlist implementation guide.
- Upload the video to YouTube. Complete the video upload separately and obtain its video ID. Playlist insertion refers to this ID, not to the video file on your device.
- Get the destination playlist ID. Identify the YouTube playlist that the hosted playback workflow is intended to use. The playlist ID is distinct from the video ID.
- Authorize your API request. Use OAuth 2.0 with an account authorized to make the playlist change.
- Insert the playlist item. Call
playlistItems.insertwith a playlist item containing the destination ID insnippet.playlistId, and the video reference insnippet.resourceId:kindmust beyoutube#videoandvideoIdmust be the uploaded video’s ID. Consult the API guide for request details and authorization requirements. - Verify both sides. Confirm the item appears in the YouTube playlist, then check the cloud-hosted player or service to establish whether it has consumed the change.
What this API request does—and does not do
A playlist item is not a livestream. YouTube distinguishes a broadcast, the event viewers watch, from a stream, the audio-video content sent to YouTube. The Live Streaming API can create broadcasts and streams, bind them, and manage broadcast state; those operations do not add a video to a playlist. The implementation guide describes a broadcast as needing a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. A stream has transmission settings such as ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate. These concern broadcast delivery, not playlist membership. A broadcast may also be recorded and saved as a YouTube video, but that still does not automatically insert it into the playlist.

Why the hosted player may not update immediately
Seeing the new item in YouTube confirms the playlist change, not that a separate cloud player has refreshed its own playlist data. The service might read the playlist directly, use an API integration, or require another update step; its refresh interval and supported video visibility settings are provider-specific. The available YouTube documentation does not establish those details for an unnamed hosted service. Check that provider’s instructions or status display rather than assuming immediate playback.
- Confirm the correct playlist ID was used.
- Confirm the video ID belongs to the intended YouTube upload and the playlist item is visible in YouTube.
- Check the hosted service for a refresh, sync, or playlist reload control, if it provides one.
- Check the service’s rules for public, unlisted, or private videos; do not assume all visibility settings are handled identically.
Common errors and what to check
- Authorization or permission error: Verify that the request uses OAuth 2.0 and that the authorized account can edit the target playlist. Playlist insertion requires OAuth authorization.
- Video does not appear in the playlist: Recheck the playlist ID and video ID, then inspect the API response and confirm the insertion succeeded.
- Video appears on YouTube but not in the hosted stream: Treat this as a separate provider-side sync issue. Check the service’s refresh behavior and supported video visibility; YouTube’s playlist insertion documentation cannot determine the provider’s refresh timing.
- Live API permission error: If separately managing a live stream through the Live Streaming API, check the authorization scopes for the live operation. The live stream insertion reference lists insufficient live permissions as an error condition. Those live permissions do not substitute for playlist insertion.
