Add chapters to an archived YouTube stream by editing its description in YouTube Studio and entering timestamp-and-title lines. First confirm the replay exists and covers the period you want to index: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a 24/7 broadcast should not be assumed to produce one complete archive.
Check the archive before planning chapters
In YouTube Studio, open Content and find the completed stream in the live or replay content list. Confirm which archived video is available and check its duration. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a continuous channel, use the replay or replay segments that actually exist rather than expecting one video to cover the whole broadcast.
Add manual chapters in YouTube Studio
- Open the replay: In YouTube Studio, go to Content, locate the archived stream, and open its video details.
- Edit the description: Add a timestamp and a concise label for each meaningful transition, event, or recurring segment. Put each entry on its own line.
- Use elapsed replay time: Enter the position within the archived video, not the real-world broadcast clock. For example, use
01:24:30 Night shift beginsonly if that moment occurs 1 hour, 24 minutes, and 30 seconds into this particular replay. This is the practical interpretation of YouTube’s description-based chapter system; its help pages do not set out a separate 24/7 live-stream clock convention. - Check the chapter rules: Start with
00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. A format illustration is00:00 Stream begins,01:24:30 Night shift begins, and06:10:00 Featured event; choose labels and positions that match your own replay. - Save and verify: Save the video details, then open the replay as a viewer and seek to the chapter points. Confirm that the divisions appear and lead to the intended moments.
YouTube’s Video Chapters guidance describes chapters as sections with individual previews. YouTube’s video-details documentation sets a 5,000-character description limit, so keep labels concise and leave room for the rest of your description. See Edit video settings.
Manual chapters or automatic chapters?

For a replay with known events or segments, manual chapters provide explicit labels, subject to YouTube’s eligibility rules. To troubleshoot missing chapters, check the timestamp format and ordering, the minimum chapter length, feature access, and whether the content or channel is eligible.

What chapters can—and cannot—do for discovery
Chapters give viewers a way to navigate to parts of a long replay and provide context about what happens there. YouTube’s documentation does not establish a measured increase in search ranking, impressions, or views from adding chapters. Treat them as a navigation aid, not a guaranteed algorithmic boost.
