For a 24/7 children’s story livestream on YouTube, prepare subtitles against the final recording, then either burn them into the video so they are always visible or deliver a synchronized closed-caption track through a compatible encoder or YouTube’s supported HTTP caption workflow. YouTube’s automatic live captions are not a dependable all-day substitute: they are limited to eligible English streams, must be enabled per stream, and do not remain on the recording after the livestream ends.
Choose how viewers will see the subtitles
There are two main ways to show prepared subtitles. Open captions are part of the video image. Closed captions are a separate track viewers can show or hide when the player supports it.

Open captions are often the more straightforward choice for a fixed prerecorded story loop: the words travel with the video and do not depend on a live caption feed. The trade-off is that viewers cannot hide them. A closed-caption track gives viewers control, but only if the encoder or caption system delivers it correctly throughout the stream.
For accessibility, captions should communicate more than dialogue when other sounds matter. The W3C’s WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.4 says, “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.” W3C guidance describes captions as including dialogue, speaker identification, and significant sound effects. For a story, check character names, narrator wording, and meaningful non-speech cues such as a sound that carries part of the plot. Prepare accurate captions for the finished story
- Finalize the recording first. Work from the exact audio and video that will be streamed, not an earlier script or rough cut. Changes to narration or edits can make previously timed captions inaccurate.
- Transcribe and time the speech. Break the text into readable segments that appear with the spoken words. Check names and phrasing against the recording rather than trusting speech recognition without review.
- Add important sound information. Include significant non-speech cues where they help viewers understand the story. Identify speakers when it is not clear from the audio who is speaking.
- Choose open or closed captions. For open captions, render the subtitles into the finished video and review their contrast, placement, and size on a small screen. For closed captions, confirm that your encoder or caption provider can send the synchronized track in a format YouTube accepts.
- Check synchronization after encoding. Review the encoded output, not only the editing timeline. Watch for timing shifts or text that is cut off or obscured.
W3C describes synchronized caption creation for live media in Technique G9. The cited guidance does not specify a single subtitle file format or certify a particular video-loop setup, so verify the format and implementation with the tools you use.
Set up a closed-caption track in YouTube Live
Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions
- Create or open the YouTube Live stream and go to its setup or settings.
- Enable closed captions and choose Embedded 608/708, then save the setting.
- Configure the encoder to send EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data that matches the stream.
- Test the stream in the YouTube player and confirm viewers can select the caption track.
YouTube documents support for up to four language tracks under the 608/708 standard, but currently supports one caption track for this embedded workflow. Supported HTTP caption feed
- In the YouTube Live setup, enable captions and obtain the stream’s captions ingestion URL.
- Give that signed HTTP URL to compatible caption software or a caption provider.
- Set the documented 30- or 60-second broadcast delay in the advanced settings for this workflow, as appropriate to the setup.
- Test that the caption timing matches the delayed video and that the feed remains active through a story transition and loop restart.
YouTube says a stream entry point has one caption feed. Its help page lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as supported software or options, including StreamText.Net as a cloud-based caption delivery system. That listing establishes technical relevance; it does not establish an endorsement, service-level guarantee, or suitability for unattended 24/7 operation.
Understand the limits of YouTube automatic live captions
YouTube’s help documentation says automatic live captions are English-only, are enabled for individual live streams rather than an entire channel, and are being rolled out to eligible English channels streaming at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. Captions do not remain on the video after the livestream ends. Confirm availability in the account and on the specific stream rather than assuming a channel-wide, always-on setting.

YouTube also identifies poor sound, unsupported language, overlapping speakers, and other processing issues as possible causes of caption problems. For a prerecorded story, reviewing the final audio and caption text is more directly useful than buying live audio equipment: a microphone neither generates captions nor fixes a caption feed.

Test the full 24/7 loop before relying on it
YouTube’s caption instructions do not promise round-the-clock caption-feed uptime or automatic reconnection. Test the actual encoder, caption software, and stream together before treating the setup as unattended.
- Run long enough to observe a story transition and a full loop restart.
- Confirm captions remain synchronized and do not drift as playback continues.
- Check that captions are still available after switching stories.
- Test whether the caption feed reconnects after an encoder restart or interruption.
- Review the stream recording and player experience, including what happens when the live stream ends.
Confirm reconnection behavior with the specific encoder and caption provider; do not assume the platform will restore a failed feed.

Legal obligations depend on the stream and creator
W3C’s WCAG criterion is accessibility guidance, not by itself a determination that every creator has a legal duty to caption a particular livestream. The U.S. Department of Justice’s 2024 rulemaking discussion addresses live-audio captioning in the context of WCAG requirements for covered public entities, but it does not establish that an unidentified creator or stream is covered. Applicable duties depend on jurisdiction, the entity, and distribution context; consult relevant legal guidance for your situation.
