To show the current Gurbani shabad or song name inside the live video, add a text overlay to the scene your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS, use a Text source; for a simple setup, have it read a text file that an operator updates at each track change. For an unattended stream, the playback setup must reliably identify the current item and update the displayed text. A playlist by itself does not guarantee that the overlay will change.
Changing the title in YouTube Studio is different: it changes the stream’s watch-page metadata, not text embedded in the video. YouTube’s live stream settings and OBS text sources serve different purposes.
Choose where the song name should appear
- Over the video: Add a text overlay to the scene in OBS or the encoder producing the stream. Viewers see the name as part of the picture.
- On the YouTube watch page: Edit the stream title or description in YouTube Studio. This changes broadcast metadata, not the video image.
If viewers need to identify each Gurbani item while listening, use an on-screen overlay. You can change the stream’s metadata separately when appropriate, but it is not a substitute for a track-by-track label.
Add a song-name overlay in OBS
- Create or open the scene used for the live stream. In OBS, select the scene that contains the Gurbani video or other visual layout sent to YouTube.
- Add a Text source. In the Sources area, choose the option to add a text source, name it clearly (for example, “Current Gurbani title”), and enter the displayed text or configure the source to read from a text file. OBS documents customizable text sources, including text from a file, in its Sources Guide.
- Position and style the label. Place it where it does not obscure important imagery. Check font size, contrast, and line breaks against the actual video layout, including on a small screen.
- Set how the text will change. For a known sequence with an operator monitoring playback, keep the title in the file and update the file when the current item changes. For automatic updates, use a player or integration that exposes the actual current item and updates the text source. The precise integration depends on the playback setup.
- Preview the complete transition. Confirm the first title, the change at a track boundary, and how long titles display. Check what happens when the title is missing or unknown; do not leave an outdated name on screen.
Choose a dependable way to update the title
| Approach | What viewers see | What it requires | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Text source reading a file | A song name over the video | An OBS scene, a text file, and an operator or process that updates it | Simple display, but the label is only as current as the file. |
| Text source with an automated update | A song name over the video that may change with playback | A player or integration that identifies the current item and updates the displayed text | Less manual work, but the handoff must be verified with the actual playback setup. |
| YouTube Studio metadata edit | The stream title or description on YouTube | Permission to edit the stream in YouTube Studio | Changes stream metadata, not an on-screen label. |
Using a local playlist
OBS documents a VLC Video source that can play a playlist, loop it, and shuffle it; VLC must be installed for that source to be available. See the OBS Media Sources guide. Playlist playback and a now-playing overlay are separate functions: the documented playlist feature does not establish that the current filename or song title will automatically populate a text source.

Using a scheduled or external player
If the audio comes from a web player, scheduled program, or another service, first determine whether it exposes the actual current track in a form an integration can read. Do not assume the displayed playlist order always matches what is playing; interruptions, skipped items, or playback failures can make a manually prepared sequence inaccurate.
Keep song titles separate from captions
Live captions represent audio as captions; they are not the documented mechanism for a song-name overlay. YouTube describes closed captions as “the visual display of the audio in a program” and documents caption delivery through embedded captions or supported software over HTTP in its live caption requirements. Use a text source for the title, and captions when you need captions.

Check the stream before leaving it unattended
- Verify that the text source is visible in the scene actually sent to YouTube.
- Watch at least one real track change and confirm the label updates at the correct boundary.
- Test a long title, a missing title, and any transition or playback interruption that could leave stale text on screen.
- If an operator updates a file, confirm they can reach it and know when each item changes.
- If updates are automated, verify that the player’s current-item data—not merely its planned playlist—drives the text.
Or let it run in the cloud
For the broadcast itself, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and it does not provide the song-title overlay described above; prepare and verify the title display in your video or playback workflow.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
