How to Add Sermon Titles and Speaker Names to a Church’s Continuous YouTube Stream

Set sermon titles and speaker names as YouTube watch-page metadata, or add them as a graphic in the video feed. Here’s how each method works.

To identify each sermon on YouTube, update the event’s title and description in YouTube Studio. To show the sermon title and speaker name over the video itself, add a text graphic to the encoder’s scene or production switcher. Those are separate jobs: metadata appears on the watch page, while an overlay is part of the video picture.

Choose where the title and speaker name should appear

Approach What viewers see Best fit What to account for
YouTube title and description Information on the YouTube watch page Giving each service its own sermon and speaker identification Update any copied metadata for each event.
OBS text or image overlay Names and titles inside the video image Making identification visible during playback, including in embeds Configure the source in the relevant scene and ensure it appears in the outgoing feed.
Video switcher overlay Names and titles composited into the outgoing video A church that already uses a hardware, multi-camera production workflow An optional production route, not a requirement for editing YouTube metadata.

YouTube’s title and description do not automatically become on-screen graphics. Conversely, a name shown in an OBS scene or switcher does not replace the watch-page information. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers metadata; the Presbyterian Church in Canada’s livestreaming guide describes OBS scenes and switcher overlays.

Set the sermon title and speaker in YouTube Studio

  1. Open the event. In YouTube Studio, select Go Live. In the Manage tab, create a scheduled stream, or open the event the church already uses. Scheduling creates an upcoming event that can be promoted and can offer viewer reminders; it does not send the video feed.
  2. Edit the event metadata. Set or review the title and description for this service. YouTube permits metadata to be selected when creating an encoder stream and changed by editing or while scheduling. Include the sermon title and speaker name in the wording you want viewers to see on the watch page.
  3. Check reused settings. If you use Reuse settings, inspect the inherited title, description, visibility, other settings, and stream key before publishing. Reuse carries settings forward, so an old sermon title or speaker name can otherwise remain on the new event.
  4. Connect the encoder. Use the stream URL and key shown by YouTube to configure the encoder. Keep the key private: it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it.
  5. Check the preview, then start the broadcast. Start sending the feed and wait for its preview in Live Control Room before going live. Scheduling the event alone is not a broadcast; the encoder still has to connect and send video.

Studio labels and access can depend on the channel and account. If you cannot edit an event, check that you are signed in to the channel with the necessary access and that you opened the intended scheduled stream.

Add the title and speaker as an on-screen graphic

With OBS

  1. Open the scene that will be used for the service.
  2. Add a text source for the sermon title and speaker name, or an image source containing a prepared graphic. Position and size it so it remains legible without covering important parts of the picture.
  3. Confirm the source is visible in that scene and check the resulting composition in the encoder preview before broadcasting.

An overlay belongs to the video scene, not to YouTube’s title field. If the production uses multiple scenes, check the graphic in each scene where it should appear.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

With a video switcher

A switcher that supports graphics can composite the title and speaker name into the outgoing video. This can suit an existing multi-camera setup; buying a switcher is not necessary just to change a YouTube title or description. The cited church guide discusses the ATEM Mini as an example, but its historical product details should not be treated as current pricing or a current purchase recommendation.

Use a repeatable title and description pattern

A useful title format is Sunday Service — [Sermon Title] — [Speaker Name]. This is an editorial pattern, not a YouTube requirement. Put additional context in the description if it helps viewers, such as the speaker, series, scripture reference, service date, or church website. Confirm the details match the actual broadcast before publishing.

YouTube says tags are descriptive keywords and can help when a video’s content is commonly misspelled; otherwise, tags play a minimal role in discovery. Prioritize an accurate title and description rather than relying on tags to identify the sermon.

Keep recurring services distinct from continuous playout

A recurring service page and an always-on stream are different setups. ChurchApps documents configuring a service name, day and time, recurrence, and selected sermon or live stream for a church website. That controls the website experience; it does not replace editing the YouTube event’s title and description.

Likewise, scheduling a YouTube encoder event does not create unattended 24/7 playback. YouTube’s encoder setup requires a feed to be sent when the broadcast is due. The official guidance cited here does not establish a particular continuous-playout or outage-recovery arrangement.
