You can add scenes, camera and screen feeds, graphics, text, alerts, and other production elements to a live stream with software such as OBS Studio; you do not need a hardware video switcher for those tasks. Build scenes from sources, arrange their layers, and switch between prepared layouts using Studio Mode, transitions, or hotkeys. A physical green screen is needed only if you want to remove a camera background with chroma key.
What software can do instead of a video switcher
A production application such as OBS Studio can combine separate inputs and graphics into a composed live output. You can make a different scene for each moment of a show, then switch the audience from one layout to another in software. The OBS Project’s Sources Guide documents browser, image, text, media, video-capture, display-capture, and audio sources.
This approach covers the basic job of arranging camera or screen content alongside production graphics. It does not mean that every physical switching or signal-routing need can be replaced: this guide covers composing and switching scenes inside streaming software.
Plan the scenes before adding elements
Start with a few repeatable layouts rather than building one complicated scene. For example, prepare a Welcome scene, a Main scene, a Break scene, and an End scene. OBS’s Overview Guide also gives examples such as Desktop and Game scenes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Welcome: an opening graphic or title, with any camera or audio elements you intend to use.
- Main: the primary camera or screen view, with the graphics that belong on screen during the program.
- Break: a holding layout that tells viewers the program is paused.
- End: a closing screen for when the broadcast is finished.
Choose only scenes you will actually use. A small set is easier to check and operate while presenting.
Add sources for camera, screen, graphics, and widgets
In OBS, select a scene, then use the plus button in the Sources dock to add a source. A scene is the layout; its sources are the individual elements within it. Add the sources appropriate to that layout, then repeat for the other scenes.
- Camera: add a Video Capture Source for a webcam or other supported video input.
- Screen or application: use a display-capture or window-capture source as appropriate to what you want to show.
- Static graphic or logo: use an image source. OBS also documents image slideshows.
- Titles and labels: use a text source for customizable text such as a segment title or speaker name.
- Web overlays: use a browser source for a web page or widget. OBS identifies alerts and chat boxes as common uses for browser sources.
- Video or audio assets: add a media source for media you want in a scene, and audio sources for the sound inputs or elements your setup requires.
OBS’s source options and their uses are described in its Sources Guide. The OBS browser component’s project documentation is available in the obs-browser README.

Arrange, crop, and control the layers
Sources are layered: an item higher in the Sources list appears above items below it. Put backgrounds behind foreground graphics, and keep text or widgets above the footage they should overlay. Select a source and position or resize it in the preview; crop it when you want to show only part of its image. Use the visibility control to hide or show an element without removing it from the scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Select the scene you want to edit.
- Add its sources from the Sources dock using the plus button.
- Reorder the sources so the intended foreground elements appear above the background elements.
- Position and resize each source in the preview; crop any source that should not be fully visible.
- Toggle visibility to check the layout with and without optional elements.
These controls are useful for both static production graphics and browser-based widgets. A lower-third title can remain in the scene but hidden until needed; a browser overlay can be shown only in the layout where it belongs.
Switch scenes while live without exposing edits
For a prepared change, OBS Studio Mode lets you work on a scene while the current scene remains live, then transition the prepared scene to the output. This is helpful when changing the layout would otherwise expose the process of rearranging sources to viewers. OBS documents built-in Cut and Fade transitions as well as additional choices including Swipe, Slide, Fade to Color, and Luma Wipe in its Overview Guide.

- Prepare the next scene in Studio Mode while the live output remains on the current scene.
- Check the preview for missing, misplaced, or unexpectedly visible sources.
- Choose the transition you want, then transition the prepared scene to the live output.
For simple changes, scene and source hotkeys can switch to a specific scene or hide and show sources. Set up the controls you need in advance and avoid relying on an improvised mouse search during a broadcast.
Use Streamlabs overlays with OBS if that suits your workflow
Streamlabs documents three ways to work with overlays: install one from its library, import an existing overlay file, or build scenes manually and add image files as sources. Its instructions also describe moving an overlay into OBS by importing a Streamlabs scene collection; that transfer path does not require a plugin. See Streamlabs’ overlay instructions. Library contents and product features can change, so check the current options in the application.
Test the show before broadcasting
Before the first live broadcast, test the scenes, settings, and stream smoothness. OBS recommends this in its Overview Guide so you can catch setup or performance problems before an audience sees them. Check the transitions as well as the individual layouts: a scene that looks correct in the editor may still contain a hidden, missing, or misplaced source when you switch to it.

- Visit every planned scene and confirm that its intended sources are present.
- Check that layer order keeps text and graphics visible above the content they should overlay.
- Try the visibility controls and hotkeys you plan to use.
- Use Studio Mode to prepare and transition a scene, rather than assuming the live output will change as expected.
- Check the camera and any chroma-key effect if your show uses one.
The official documentation establishes these software capabilities; it does not provide a controlled CPU or latency comparison between different overlay methods. Performance depends on the setup, so test the configuration you plan to broadcast with rather than assuming one source type will always run better.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a green screen is—and is not—needed
A green screen is optional physical equipment for a particular camera effect, not a general requirement for adding production elements. If you want to remove the camera background, OBS documents adding a webcam as a Video Capture Source and applying its Chroma Key filter. The OBS webcam guide describes positioning and resizing the camera source and using the filter to remove a green screen.
A green screen backdrop kit is relevant only if you want that chroma-key background effect. It is unnecessary for static images, text, browser widgets, or software scene transitions.

Or let it run in the cloud
OBS is the do-it-yourself option for composing a live show from camera, screen, and graphic sources. StreamNeo serves a different need: keeping uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream. It does not go live from a camera or replace the OBS production workflow described above.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams what you uploaded at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. You can read more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
