To add an episode to an always-on YouTube stream, update two separate places: add the published video to your show’s podcast playlist in YouTube Studio, then add it to the playback playlist or schedule that feeds your YouTube Live stream. Updating the podcast playlist alone does not necessarily change what the live stream plays.
1. Publish the episode as a YouTube video
YouTube podcast episodes are videos, not audio-only uploads. YouTube Help puts it plainly: “On YouTube, each podcast episode is represented by a video.” An MP3 by itself cannot be added as a YouTube podcast episode. Upload the episode video to your channel first, or use the episode video already published there. YouTube Help: Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.
2. Add the video to the show’s podcast playlist
In YouTube Studio, open the podcast for the show and add the new full episode to it. YouTube recommends that each show have a public playlist containing its full episodes, and that creators add every new full episode and check the playlist order. Follow the Studio prompts for the podcast and playlist currently associated with your channel; interface labels can change.
Choose an order that suits the show. YouTube recommends oldest-first for a narrative series and newest-first for topical shows. Check the resulting order in the public playlist, not only in the Studio editor. Podcast setup guidance · YouTube Help: Manage your podcasts in YouTube Studio.

3. Add the episode to the live stream’s playback queue
The podcast playlist organizes on-demand episodes. A continuous live feed is sent separately by an encoder or cloud playout service, which uses its own playlist, schedule, or queue. Add or import the new video into that playback system as well. Do not assume that changing the YouTube podcast playlist automatically updates a separately configured live stream.
If you use a local encoder
Add the episode file to the media playlist or schedule in the encoder setup that sends the stream to YouTube Live. Confirm the file path, playback order, and transition from the current video. The computer must remain on and connected while it plays and encodes the feed; you are responsible for recovering playback if the computer, software, or connection fails. If you use cloud playout
Import or upload the episode to the service’s media library, then add it to the active channel playlist or schedule. Check any requirements for file formats, storage, scheduling, and stream duration in that service’s current documentation and plan terms.
For example, OneStream Live’s help article, last updated September 3, 2026, describes its 24/7 feature as YouTube-only, requiring an Enterprise plan, with videos added from a device, its library, or cloud storage and a maximum stated duration of 30 days. Playout.video describes a cloud channel with playlists, scheduled slots, and per-slot fallback, and lists podcasts as a use case; its page says 24/7 channels are on paid plans and the free plan runs up to two hours at a time. These are vendor-stated terms, so verify current limits before relying on them. Playout.video.

4. Check the live rotation and continuity
- Confirm the new episode appears in the playback list or schedule that actually feeds YouTube Live.
- Move it to the intended position. The live rotation can follow a different order from the on-demand podcast playlist.
- Check that the preceding item ends and the new episode starts as expected, including any transition or fallback behavior your setup provides.
- If the service offers recovery or fallback settings, verify they are enabled and know what happens if an episode cannot play.
Plan archives separately for long-running streams
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a stream that runs longer, do not assume YouTube will preserve one complete archive. If a complete on-demand copy matters, publish episodes individually as videos or plan stream restarts, and confirm how your chosen playout service handles restarts and recordings. Whichever route you choose, distinguish the public podcast playlist from the live playout queue, and verify both after publishing each episode.
