Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To dissolve smoothly from one nature clip to another in OBS Studio, put each clip in its own scene and use the built-in Fade scene transition. Choose Fade in the Scene Transitions dock, set its duration, then switch between the scenes. The duration is adjustable; the right setting depends on the pace you want, not on a universal recommended value. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Set up one scene for each clip
- Create a scene for the first clip. In the Scenes dock, add a scene and give it a clear name, such as “Forest” or “Rain.” Repeat for each clip you want to transition between.
- Add the video file to its scene. Select the scene, use the Sources dock to add a Media Source, and choose the local video file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM. Enable Loop if that clip should repeat while its scene is active. Media Sources
- Match the scene layouts. Frame each clip as you want it to appear in the stream. OBS displays sources according to their order in the Sources dock: keep overlays that should appear in front of the footage above the video source. Sources Guide
Apply the Fade transition
- Find the Scene Transitions dock. Select Fade from the transition list.
- Adjust the transition duration in the dock. A longer duration creates a slower dissolve; a shorter one makes the change quicker. OBS documents that the active transition duration can be changed but does not prescribe one setting for nature footage. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Switch from one clip scene to the next. OBS applies the selected Fade to the scene change, dissolving between the outgoing and incoming images.
- Preview or record a test and check both picture and sound. The scene transition provides the visual dissolve, but the appropriate audio behavior depends on your sources and setup. Verify the result before broadcasting.
Choose between separate scenes and a playlist
Use separate scenes when you need a documented way to fade between clips. For playlist convenience, OBS also offers VLC Video, which can play a playlist and supports loop and shuffle settings. VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The OBS guide documents playlist playback, but does not establish that VLC Video crossfades between playlist entries; do not rely on it for that effect. Media Sources
Automate changes or design a custom blend
Hands-free scene switching
For automatic changes between separate clip scenes, you can use the third-party Advanced Scene Switcher plugin. Its OBS forum listing describes macro-based automation and lists support for Windows, macOS and Linux. At the time reflected in that listing, it showed version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, and OBS Studio 31.1.1 as the minimum version. Plugin details can change, so check the current listing and compatibility information before installing.
Mask-driven transitions
A Track Matte Stinger can create a designed, mask-based transition rather than a straightforward Fade. In OBS’s explanation, black in the matte shows the current scene, white shows the next scene, and gray produces partial blending. For a combined stinger and matte, OBS recommends placing them side by side or stacking them in one file. Separate files are disabled for track-matte stingers because synchronized decoding cannot be guaranteed. This is a more involved option than the built-in Fade. Track Matte Stinger Transitions

Which approach fits your setup?
| Approach | Clip organization | Switching and effect | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in Fade | One scene per clip | Scene changes use a simple dissolve; switch scenes yourself | Direct, low-complexity crossfades |
| VLC Video | Playlist in one source | Playlist playback, loop and shuffle; per-item crossfades are not established by the OBS guide | Playlist convenience when documented crossfades are not required |
| Advanced Scene Switcher | Separate scenes | Automates scene changes with macros; third-party plugin | Hands-free switching between configured scenes |
| Track Matte Stinger | Scene changes with a matte transition asset | Mask-driven blend using black, white and gray matte values | A custom-designed transition beyond a basic dissolve |
Troubleshooting crossfades
- The clip changes abruptly. Confirm Fade is selected in the Scene Transitions dock rather than Cut, and check that you are changing scenes.
- A playlist plays but does not dissolve between entries. VLC Video provides playlist playback; the OBS Media Sources guide does not document per-entry crossfades. Put clips in separate scenes and use Fade instead.
- VLC Video is missing. Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, install the 64-bit VLC libraries required by the OBS source.
- An overlay disappears behind the video. Reorder the Sources dock so the overlay is above the clip source.
- A custom matte transition is unavailable or out of sync. Use a single file for the combined stinger and matte; OBS disables separate files for track-matte stingers because synchronized decoding cannot be guaranteed.
- Automatic switching does not work. Check the plugin’s current OBS minimum-version and operating-system compatibility on its official listing.
