A YouTube channel with 50 subscribers can stream live from a computer. YouTube’s 50-subscriber minimum applies to live streaming from the mobile app, not to streaming from a computer using a webcam or encoder. Computer streaming still has other eligibility requirements, and first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
What you need before streaming from a computer
- A verified channel. YouTube requires channel verification for live streaming.
- No live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. A subscriber count does not override a restriction; YouTube may disable live access temporarily or permanently for policy-related reasons, including age-related and copyright issues.
- To meet YouTube’s age rule. You must be at least 16 to live stream.
- Live streaming enabled. If this is your first time enabling it, allow up to 24 hours before trying to go live.
YouTube states: “To live stream, you must have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and have a verified channel.” See YouTube’s live streaming tips, live streaming restrictions and how to get started with live streaming.
Why the 50-subscriber rule causes confusion
The minimum of 50 subscribers is for live streaming from the YouTube mobile app. It is not a minimum for going live from a computer. YouTube also says that mobile channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have a limited mobile-stream audience, and their mobile-stream archives may be private by default. Those mobile-specific limits do not change computer-streaming eligibility. See YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements.
Choose a computer method
| Method | Best suited to | What you need | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Webcam | Speaking directly to viewers | A computer with a webcam; a built-in camera may be enough. | A simpler setup, with less control over scenes and sources. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or a more produced stream | Encoder software or hardware; external cameras and audio equipment are optional. | More production control, but more settings and equipment to configure. |
YouTube describes webcam and encoder streaming as computer options for different needs. You do not need to buy an external webcam, microphone, or encoder just to meet the subscriber requirement. Read YouTube’s overview of webcam and encoder methods.

Set up and test the stream
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming. Complete YouTube’s verification and activation steps. If activation is new, wait up to 24 hours before troubleshooting the streaming method itself.
- Choose webcam or encoder. Use the webcam method for a straightforward camera stream. Choose an encoder when you need gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or additional audio/video sources.
- Check upload capacity. Make sure your connection can sustain the bitrate you intend to send. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom rather than using the full available capacity. See YouTube’s network guidance.
- Run a test. Check that the video is stable and the audio is clear before relying on the stream. Monitor the connection and audio/video during the broadcast.
If you still cannot go live
- Live streaming is not available yet: If you have just enabled it for the first time, wait up to 24 hours.
- You see an eligibility or access restriction: Check channel verification and whether YouTube has applied a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Having 50 subscribers does not remove these requirements.
- You are under 16: YouTube’s stated age rule is at least 16 to live stream.
- The stream disconnects or looks unstable: Check upload bandwidth and leave the recommended 20% headroom; test the setup and monitor the stream.
- You are trying to stream from a phone: The 50-subscriber threshold and possible audience or archive limits concern mobile streaming, not computer streaming.
